The dangers of tobacco use are widely known and documented however; more data
comes out every year showing just how dangerous it can be. The side effects of exposure
to second hand smoke are also cause for alarm and many public health educators, and
clinicians are urging people to not only avoid smoking, but to avoid those who are
smoking around them. One of the most susceptible populations to smoke inhalation are
those with asthma. Tobacco smoke is a powerful asthma trigger because when a
person inhales tobacco smoke, irritating and inflaming substances
settle into the moist lining of the airway and this can cause an attack
in those with respiratory diseases like asthma. (CDC, 2016)
Tobacco smoke also is dangerous to asthmatics because it de-
stroys the tiny hair-like structures in the airways called cilia.
Normally, cilia sweep dust and mucus out of the airways, acting
like a filter system. Tobacco smoke damages cilia
so they are unable to work, which causes dust and
mucus to accumulate in the airways.
1142
This is also, why people who have recently quit smoking sometimes report coughing more.
The reason for the increase in coughing in recent quitters is because previously damaged
cilia begin noticing the large amount of unfiltered materials in the lungs and then the
body begins working to clear it out. While this type of coughing is a positive thing, if a for-
mer smoker does not know that, they may be tempted to pick smoking back up. Smoke
also causes the lungs to make more mucus than normal, and as a result, it can build up in
the airways, which can trigger an attack. Tobacco smoke is an irritant that can exacerbate
a variety of health conditions and so avoiding it as much as possible is the most healthful
option. The best thing you can do if you smoke is to quit, and the best thing that you can
do if you live with a smoker is to avoid being in the room or vicinity of them while they
smoke. Some other tips include not allowing smoking in your home or your car, not letting
anyone smoke around you or your child, and avoiding public places that permit smoking
in closed areas. Remember it is NEVER too late to quit!
