A PRECIOUS LETTER FROM THE GENERAL COUNCILLOR FOR THE

FORMATION OF THE SALESIAN SOCIETY, FR. IVO COELHO

My dear young friends,

I write to you as you return to school after almost 2.5 years of online learning. I
am sure you are delighted to be back “in presence” with the possibility of
meeting friends and teachers, playing and learning together, and just being
happy together, with all the little mischief that is part of school life.

I am aware that the years of the pandemic have been harsh on all of you. Some
families must have had the necessary equipment for online learning, but I can
imagine others who were not always able to provide a computer or a mobile for
their children, together with internet connectivity, quiet spaces at home to learn
without distraction, and so on. Additionally , there must have been other
economic hardships caused by loss of jobs or reduction in salaries, the
frustration caused by being cooped up at home without the possibility of going
out, playing, meeting friends and relatives. Worse still, many families might have
been visited by serious Covid-related illness and even death . It has been a hard
time. I hope you have been able to come through it with serenity and grace.

At this moment, I join you in thanking God for his tender mercies, for the many doctors and health personnel who risked their
lives in ministering to the sick, for the many others who kept essentials services going, for your parents and relatives who
stood firm despite hardships and difficulties. I thank God for the management, teachers and support personnel who had to
learn new technologies and adapt to new situations, and who did it with commitment and fidelity, even though it must have
not been easy.

I pray that each of you has come through this trying time with positive values of gratitude for little and big things, peace and
serenity in difficulty, friendship that knows no boundaries, eyes to see and hearts to reach out to people in need, patience,
courage, generosity – all things that contribute to the growth of humanity. Learning and passing examinations are only a
small part of what it means to be in school. School is about education, and education is about learning to face life with all the
attitudes that contribute to the growth of humanity. It means overcoming short-sighted visions, the tendency to look after
oneself and one’s own family and caste and community, and so on. Love involves the giving of ourselves, and love changes
everything.

Dear parents, teachers and Salesians who form part of the educative-pastoral community of Don Bosco School, Panjim, your
children will learn not so much what you tell them but from the example of your lives. Constant reminder and nagging will
only turn them off. Be calm, learn to dialogue with your children. Allow me to quote , Pope Francis, who gives parents this
wonderful advice:

Obsession… is not education. We cannot control every situation that
a child may experience…. It is more important to start processes
than to dominate spaces. If parents are obsessed with always
knowing where their children are and controlling all their
movements, they will seek only to dominate space. But this is no way
to educate, strengthen and prepare their children to face
challenges. What is most important is the ability to lovingly help
them grow in freedom, maturity, overall discipline and real
autonomy. Only in this way will children come to possess the
wherewithal needed to fend for themselves and to act intelligently
and prudently whenever they meet with difficulties. The real
question, then, is not where our children are physically, or whom
they are with at any given time, but rather where they are
existentially, where they stand in terms of their convictions, goals,
desires and dreams. The questions I would put to parents are these:
“Do we seek to understand ‘where’ our children really are in their
journey? Where is their soul, do we really know? And above all, do
we want to know?”

Have faith in your children, respect them, and know that they have
their own times and rhythms. I share with you these lines from the
great poet Kahlil Gibran which may disturb you and also inspire you!

Dear friends, all of you, let us go ahead with much faith in God,
hope for a better world, and the courage to contribute our part in
that better world.
I wish you much joy, friendship, and all that is good in the school
year ahead of you.

With affection in Don Bosco,

Life comes full circle: Embarking on a Past Pupils’ Journey
“The only source of knowledge is experience.”
Albert Einstein

Our past is often filled with bittersweet experiences. We should learn from the not-so-pleasant experiences and should reminisce about the
happy ones with fondness. There are certain cherished moments which when you think of, bring peaceful contentment and a smile to your
face. This is exactly what happens to me when I think of Don Bosco High School, my Alma Mater, and a place I called home for six years.

The most important role in shaping one's personality is played by a school, and I can humbly state that I am who I am because of the holistic
education I received from this institution. My heart is filled with immense pride, affection, and gratitude, mixed with nostalgia and longing for
those wonderful school years. The sweet memories of running through the corridors, preparing notice boards and club charts, compering
competitions and events, news reading, the last minute exam study just minutes before the exam could begin, the list is indeed endless.
During my formative years, I had the good fortune of studying under some exceptional teachers. They enabled and helped me overcome
my anxieties and weaknesses and facilitated me to excel using my skills and strengths. Some of the teachers remained my coaches and
mentors even after my time at this institution.

It’s always a pleasure to give back to the school that gave me so much. It’s my privilege to assist DBHS, the staff and students in any way I
can. Since graduating in 2016, I've been fortunate to continue my relationship with DBHS earlier as a freelancer and consultant and this
academic year as the Digital Operations in-charge personnel as well as overseeing the IT infrastructure of the school. Being on the other
side of the fence, I can proudly say that my teachers, who are now my colleagues, are just as helpful today as they used to be back then.

I feel honoured to be back on this campus once again. Seeing and helping students develop into their potential is a cause that I am
privileged to be able to contribute to. This year we plan to promote digital media and literacy by starting a students' corner on our website
which will be solely for students to showcase their talent be it in creative writing, art, music, photography, videography and much more.
Students will get an opportunity to break from their barriers of stage fright and will learn how to speak publicly and engage with an audience.
By providing a platform for amateurs to foray into the media industry, students who are brimming with talent can make their way in front of
the camera as well as behind where they will get a chance to work with industry-grade equipment and interact with professionals from the
field.
Students, you may struggle and feel defeated sometimes, however, these moments are those that define
your learning experience. Talk to a friend or even approach a teacher or relative when you're down. By
making the most of your tough moments you will realize that you've taught yourself how to succeed.
Wishing you dear students every success in the future. From this year onwards, ‘Be Wonderful’.’ Do not
be afraid to try your hand at new things while pursuing and excelling at old. Grab every opportunity that
comes your way so that you can be the best student and more importantly the best human being you can
be!

It’s great to be back home. Thank you, Don Bosco High School for giving me the wings to fly and now
helping me use my talents to soar! May 75 years soon turn to 100 and beyond!

When broken, she's the one who comforts
Even in the cold winter

She makes sure we're covered
She's the strongest soul known to me
Faced every problem, alone but bravely

Bore such pain to raise me

From the day I was born
She never left me alone
While hugging her heart
She says "You're my child, my part"
Then she hums this little song
Which makes my broken mind so strong

It's that very song
Which I’ll be humming with her, all life long
