Endangered Species
Great White Shark
Great White Shark
The great white shark is the world's largest known predatory
fish. It also known as Carcharodon carcharias . Its weight is
about 4000—7000 pounds and its length is 16—20 feets. It has
300 teeth, but it don’t chew its food. Sharks rip their prey into
mouth-sized pieces which are swallowed whole. The shark’s
heavy, torpedo-shaped body allows it to cruise efficiently for
long periods of time. When the sharks is hunting for food, it will
switches to a high burst speed. Sometimes it leaping out of the
water. It feeds on a wide range of prey , such as small fish to
large seals and dolphins.
Habitat of Great White
Shark
• Great white sharks live in almost all coastal and offshore
waters which have water temperature between 12 and 24 °C
, with greater concentrations in the United
States Northeast and California, South
Africa, Japan, Oceania……. One of the densest-known
populations is found around Dyer Island , South Africa.
Why the great white shark is matter
• As large and powerful predators, great white sharks play an important
role at the top of the marine food chain. Sharks as apex predators can
regulate species abundance, distribution and diversity, which in turn
can impact the health of marine habitats. Additionally, they provide
essential food sources for scavengers and remove the sick and weak
from populations of prey species.
The ways of the shark to help the world
1)Climate action advocates
.The sharks help to make oceans more resilient to climate
change . They swimming around the shallow seaweed meadows
, these sharks serve as crowd-controllers and prevent
overgrazing by marine creatures such as turtles or dugongs.
Less continuous grazing in the same spot means more
abundant, denser seaweed. Seaweed can capture carbon from
the atmosphere 35 times faster than tropical rain forests.
2) Underwater gardeners
.Large, deep-diving sharks help phytoplankton (microscopic marine
plants) to grow. These creatures dive down to feed and as they return to
the surface, they defecate, bringing back crucial nutrients. Without those
essential elements, phytoplankton – which forms the foundation of many
oceanic food chains – couldn’t grow! And you know what is responsible for
every breath you take? Phytoplankton, as it produces half of Earth’s
oxygen supply! So yes, some sharks really are deep-diving gardeners that
help us breathe.
3)Blue circle of life
• Even after they die of natural causes, sharks contribute so
much to the marine ecosystems! Scientists analyzing video
footage from the seafloor off Angola’s coast discovered that
carcasses of a dead whale shark resting peacefully at 3,937
feet supported entire communities of deep-sea scavengers.
A blue circle of life is formed.
How can we save them
• Keep shark off the menu
• Adopt a shark
• Educate yourself and others about sharks
• Tell congress to stop hunting shark and shark
finning
What WWF is doing
• WWF tagged the great white shark and tracked their activities by
satellites and collect their information. This information on their
behavior will help with a management plan for the protected area
where they are found (Guadalupe Island Biosphere Reserve), such as
how to protect them from by catch and to regulate tourism.
Speech
Good afternoon,
Our principal, teachers and friends. I’m standing here to give a speech for yours. The title of my speech
is “Great White Shark”.
Do you all know great white shark is a endangered species? Let me tell you the information about great
white shark. Great white shark is the largest known predatory fish. It’s scientific name is Carcharodon
Carcharias. Great white shark normally can grow to 4—5.9m and 2 tons(2000KG). They have 300 teeth but
they don’t chew its food. Although they are heavy but their torpedo-shaped body can help to cruise
efficiently for a long periods time. They usually live in almost all coastal and offshore water which have
temperature between 12 and 24 °c.
Why the great white shark become endangered species? It is because people hunting them for their fin
,their habitat is destroyed and some natural causes. According to a 2010 study, there are only 3500 great
white shark still alive today. They are distributed in United States Northeast ,South Africa ,California ,Japan
,Oceania….
Do you all know WWF? WWF works in nearly 100 countries. At every level, they collaborate with people
around the world to develop and deliver innovative solutions that protect communities, wildlife, and the
places in which they live. They tagged the great white shark and collect their information by satellites. WWF
will use this information to protect great white shark from catch and to regulate tourism.
Besides WWF ,we also can save great white shark to avoid them becoming extinct. We can tell the
congress to stop hunting and shark finning. We must keep the shark off the menu and educate others about
great white shark. Lastly, we could adopt a shark.
Thank you for listening to my speech, I hope you don’t hurt the great white shark for the future
generation can still see and recognize great white shark.
Thanks for watching
