the Andaman sea, 45 kilometers away from the
mainland. Sometimes you will hear ‘Koh Phi-Phi’
or notice that many islands starts with ‘Koh’
which means ‘Island’ in Thai. The name Phi-Phi

the late 1940s. The resident population of Phi-Phi
island remains more than 80 percent Muslim.
Unfortunately, parts of Phi-Phi suffered a lot of
damage due to the tsunami and coronavirus,
while recovery is well underway, it will take more
time before many of the businesses and tourists
return.
Phi-Phi consists of several islands. Many people

is actually a group of 6 that contains 2 main
islands being Koh Phi Phi Don and Koh Phi Phi
Leh, and 4 smaller islands nearby is Koh Yung,
Koh Mai-Pai, Koh Pida-Nok and Koh Pida-Nai.
This confusion comes from Koh Phi-Phi Don or
Phi-Phi Don Island that have all the necessary
basic to comfortably accommodate tourists,

UNSEEN BEACHES

Nui Beach is a small bay on the west coast
of Koh Phi-Phi Don, south of Lana Bay,
lies approximately 1.5 kilometers to the
north of Loh Dalum beach, behind big
boulders towering in the center. It can be
reached by kayak from Loh Dalum beach
for 20-25 minutes. It is a well-known as
a good site for diving and snorkeling
destination, surrounded by tall karsts that
provide good rock climbing opportunities.
Looking out into the sea, you will discover
a towering islet in the shape of pillars and
the surrounding Camel Rock. The hump
and head are strikingly similar to those of
a camel,
and there is a magnificent coral reef
nearby. It has several intriguing
swimthroughs and is home to a variety of
nudibranchs, seahorses, and ghost
pipefish. Due to the small coral reef,
getting to Nui Bay at low tide is
challenging. The mountain north of Nui
Bay is filled with caverns. It is preferable
to visit here during calm weather when
there are no ripples.

NUI BEACH

UNSEEN BEACHES

Viking Beach is a little cove between 19
Tonsai's eastern edge and Long Beach.
The two beaches are separated by PHAK-NAM BEACH
a small rocky point covered in lush
greenery. There are restaurant located
directly on the beach and provides the
ideal setting for lunch or dinner in very
calm and lovely surroundings.
Snorkeling is excellent on both sides of
the 25-metre-long beach, and the
greenery gives plenty of shade.
The short trail through the bush to get
there is not difficult, it begins behind
the Arayaburi Resort and ends at
Tonsai East.

VIKING BEACH Phak-Nam beach, also known as Relax
Bay, is located on the east coast of Phi-
Phi Don Island, just south of Loh Bagao.
This 400-metre-long beach is great for
an off the beaten track. Phak-Nam beach
is a calm spot to be, nestled between the
turquoise waters of
the Andaman Sea and the different
shades of green of the jungle.
The main mode of transportation to
Phak-Nam beach is, of course, a long-tail
boat. If you stay in Loh Bagao,
you can walk through the jungle to get
there. It should be noted that this trail is
quite steep.

SDNALSI IHP-IHP DNUORA HOL LOH DALUM

Loh Dalum, also known as Loh Dalum Bay,
is one of the island's most popular
beaches. You can walk from Loh Dalum
Beach to Ton Sai Beach's pier in less than 5
minutes. Loh Dalum Beach has fine white
powder sand and is located in
a beautiful sheltered bay with limestone
rocks. The stunning large bay can also be
seen from the Phi Phi Viewpoint.
Loh Dalum bay is quite shallow. When the
water begins to recede, all that remains is
a lovely paddling pool. Because of the
bay's sheltered location, there are almost
no high waves. This make this beach ideal
for small children or those looking to
sunbathe in the sea.
There are a number of bars and
accommodations in Loh Dalum Bay where
evening parties are held and sometimes
during the day. As a result, this beach is
frequently visited by young people, and
it is the party beach of Koh Phi-Phi during
the high season.

LOH AROUND
PHI-PHI

LOH SAMA

Loh Sama, also known as Sama Bay,
is one of the most well-known attractions
on Koh Phi-Phi Leh. The bay, which is
located on the eastern side of the island's
southern tip, has a small islet in the center
and a tiny beach at the back of a small
canyon on its northern end. Loh Sama is
well-known for its snorkeling and diving
options. It is separated from the famous
Maya Bay by a limestone cliff, with a small
hole allowing passage at low tide. On the
side facing Maya Bay, there is a wooden
staircase and terrace with
a nice view of Loh Sama and the islet.
Loh Sama is also well-known for night-
diving in Phi Phi, there is a narrow canyon
covered in soft coral and gorgonian sea
fans that offers spectacular scenery at
night, with light reflecting off hundreds of
crustaceans on the seabed.
You can take a long-tail boat from Tonsai
Pier to Loh Sama.

LOH AROUND
PHI-PHI

LOH LANA

Loh Lana, also known as Lana Bay, is a wonderful cove located on the
northwest coast of Koh Phi-Phi Don, the main island of the Phi-Phi
archipelago. Several hundred metres northeast of Lana Bay is a
viewpoint. There is also a pristine mangrove forest in this area,
which is home to exotic birds and insects. The more popular beach of
Loh Bagao is easily accessible from Loh Lana via a 900-metre-long
cement path that connects the two beaches. The area between Loh
Lana and Loh Bagao is ripe for exploration, and it includes a path to
Nui Beach, a hidden cove just south of Loh Lana.
The beach is well-known for its excellent snorkeling and overlooks
Camel Rock, one of Phi-Phi's natural landmarks.
To get to Loh Lana, you have two options. You can hire a long-tail
boat from Loh Dalum and arrive at Lana Bay in 30 minutes. There is
also a trail that begins at Phi-Phi Viewpoint. This option will take you
approximately 2 hours.

LOH MOODEE

Loh moodee, also known as Moodee bay, is a lovely white sandy beach
bordered by emerald waters located on the east coast of Koh Phi-Phi
Don. Loh Moo Dee is really a cool spot that's very quiet and relaxing, it
is a great place to get away from the crowds. Loh Moo Dee is accessible
by foot from Tonsai East via a 1-kilometer-long path beginning at the
bottom of Phi-Phi Viewpoint. The beach provides excellent snorkeling
opportunities, primarily at both ends of the bay.
To get to Loh Moodee, You can hire a long-tail boat near Tonsai Pier,
which will take you to Moo Dee Bay in about 15 minutes.

LOH AROUND
PHI-PHI

19

LOH BAGAO

Loh Bagao is an 800-metre-wide bay on Phi-Phi Don Island's north-eastern
coast. Bagao Bay is a magnificent white-powder sand beach that runs
alongside a coconut grove.
Loh Bagao has always been difficult to reach by means other than
a long-tail boat. It is no longer the case, since a suitable path connects Loh
Bagao to Lana Bay and Nui Beach, and for the more adventurous hikers, to
Loh Dalum.
The latter track is more difficult because it passes through hills covered in
rich flora; the trek from Loh Dalum to Loh Bagao takes around 2 hours.
Moreover, There is a small river runs through the northern end of Loh
Bagao. Following this river for a few hundred meters will bring you to
a mangrove forest and a little village with a cool variety of bars,
restaurants, and resorts.
This small village has a strong personality: growing in the midst of
nowhere, between the beach and the mangrove, most of the businesses
here are typical bamboo and thatch constructions.
The main landmark in this area is the ‘Golden Gate Bridge’ of Phi-Phi
Island. Its design is reminiscent of San Francisco's world-famous Golden
Gate Bridge. Once you have passed the bridge, there's a local viewpoint
200 meters away that provides a stunning view of the cliffs.

Carlito’s beach bar is located on the eastern side of the Tonsai Bay.

tsunami in 2004, and reopened in 2011. It is well-known for its
location on the beach at the Phi-Phi Villa Resort's rooftop, and it is
the cheapest of all bars. It is inexpensive because the bar is built of
driftwood, it has wonderful low tables, it is surrounded by mats and
cushions, and most of the furnishings are created from recycled
materials, which is why it is popular among environmentalists.
It offers a pool table room and shows live broadcasting of live sports

partying, certainly check one out.

Nightclub, and Sunflower Beach Bar &
Restaurant have some of the most popular
fire shows on the island.
If you're wondering where to go on
at night, most fire performances begin

And If socializing is not your thing, there are other options,
such as watching the sunset from the beach.

island sunset over the water.

the natural colors dance in the sky and reflect in the ocean.

Long Beach, Laem Tong Beach, and Nui Bay Beach are some of the
greatest beaches on Koh Phi-Phi Don for watching the sunset.

You may also grab a drink at a seaside bar during sunset, or take a
boat excursion that includes a sunset viewing from the water.

REMEMBERING THE TSUNAMI

: HISTORY PART

The 2004 tsunami was the most destructive natural disaster in
modern history, killing almost 250,000 people in 14 nations in
just a few hours.
The Indian Ocean tsunami destroyed much of Phi-Phi Don's
inhabited area. A 10-foot-high wave smashed the coast of Koh
Phi-Phi on December 26, 2004. Around 10 a.m. local time, the
tsunami came from both bays and collided in the middle of the
archipelago. The wave that crashed into Ton Sai Bay measured
three metres in height. The wave that crashed into Loh Dalum
Bay was 6.5 metres in height. The stronger wave from Loh
Dalum Bay drove the tsunami and smashed low-lying areas in
the limestone karsts, going from Lana Bay to Bagao Bay, and
Sea Gypsy Village, killing 11 people.
Aside from these offenses, The repercussions were
devastating. Nearly 800 people were reported missing,
but more than 5,000 people were most likely killed by
the killer waves that demolished the island. Almost all
infrastructure was destroyed. This tsunami was caused by
a large earthquake that happened three hours earlier in Banda
Aceh, Sumatra, Indonesia.

AFTER THE TSUNAMI

Approximately 70% of the buildings on the island were destroyed as
a result of the tsunami. By the end of July 2005, an estimated 850
dead had been found, with a further 1,200 individuals remaining
missing. It is unlikely that the complete number of fatalities will be
known. According to local tour guides, the total is 4,000. There were
104 surviving children among Phi-Phi Don people who had lost one
or both parents. The permanent residents were sheltered in a
refugee camp at Nong Kok in Krabi Province in the immediate
aftermath of disasters.
In December 6, 2005, nearly 1,500 hotel rooms were open, and a
tsunami early-warning alarm system had been installed by the help of
volunteers.
In June, 2018, Maya Beach, made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio's
2000 film The Beach, was closed indefinitely to allow it to recover.
The beach used to draw up to 5,000 tourists and 200 boats per day.

PREVENT FUTURE TSUNAMI

Experts have learned from the December 26, 2004 tsunami.
An alarm system was installed on the island's major beaches,
and locals were trained to respond to future calamities.
Signs on the island indicate a "Evacuation Route" in case of
another tsunami, which leads to the island's highest point,
the Phi-Phi View Point.
