At our manufacturing facility in rural Cambridgeshire, Fentex have successfully commissioned a new manufacturing line to supply high quality absorbent booms to the UK industrial sector, Environment Agencies and export markets.

The booms play a vital part in protecting Britain’s environment by absorbing spills and leaks that can occur as a result of incidents and accidents throughout all sectors of industry. Typically, booms are deployed on ponds, streams, marinas, harbours and rivers to contain and absorb oil that may have entered a watercourse, possibly as a result of leaks and spills from machinery, vehicles and containers. Oil pollution can be devastating to the water environment, causing harm to animals, insects and plant life; just 1 litre of oil has the capacity to contaminate 1 million litres of water.

A further reduction in environmental impact is achieved by using recycled hydrophobic waste material to manufacture the booms, this surplus material would otherwise be disposed of via landfill or incineration.

Absorbent material used in the booms is hydrophobic, this means the booms float on water indefinitely and only allow oil and other hydrocarbons to be absorbed. Clips and rings at each end allow several booms to be linked to form a continuous barrier, perhaps to isolate part of a marina or lake where an oil spill has occurred. Strong rope running the full length of each boom gives extra tensile strength during recovery when each boom can absorb up to 70 litres of oil and weigh up to 80 kilogrammes.

Other types of boom to deal with spills of chemicals and common industrial liquids are also manufactured at Fentex’s Cambridgeshire facility. The in-house production of booms removes the need to import from overseas suppliers, eliminating carbon emissions from transportation whilst providing jobs for local people. The progression of this project helps boost the local economy and drive further investment in British manufacturing.
