HOW TO TELL IF TWO FRACTIONS ARE EQUIVALENT

Equivalent Fractions

When fractions have different numbers in them, but have the same value, they are
called equivalent fractions.
Let's take a look at a simple example of equivalent fractions:

✓ The fractions 1/2 and 2/4 have the same value, but use different numbers

✓ You can see from the picture below that they both have the same value.

How can you find equivalent fractions?

You can find out if two fractions are equivalent or equal by cross multiplying.

If you get confused on what to do, just remember draw a "X". The symbol “X” for math
means multiply. You multiply the numbers that are attached to that line or that part of
the “X”.

Another method to use to see if two fractions are equivalent is to
Multiply or divide the numerator and denominator by the same number and the
other fraction should equal the product or the quotient (It’s easier than it sounds)

Let me show you
Check to see if fractions 1/2 and 2/4 are equivalent

The fraction on the left ( ½ ) must be multiplied because the fraction on the right
( ¼ ) is bigger
Since the denominator on the right is 4 we have to multiply 2(the denominator
on the left) by 2
If we multiply the denominator by 2 we have to multiply the numerator by 2
1 x2 = 2 which is what the numerator on the right is so the fractions are
equivalent or equal

they are equivalent

Key Things to Remember
Equivalent fractions may look different, but they have the same value
You can multiply or divide to find an equivalent fraction
Adding or subtracting does not work for finding an equivalent fraction
If you multiply or divide by the top of the fraction, you must do the same to the
bottom
Use cross multiplication to determine if two fractions are equivalent.
