A lesson I’d Never Forget 1 March

Hiking is my favourite pastime. I have enjoyed hiking since school days. Being an experienced
hiker and a confident one too, I have never once expected a mishap would happen. Call it my
unlucky day or just mere carelessness. Perhaps I was just being stubborn! Well, on that
fateful day, I wanted to hike up a small hill near my home. My mum was against it at first as it
had rained earlier and the track would be slippery. But I was as confident as Hercules since I
knew the track like the back of my hand! I even told my mum not to worry. That was a big
mistake! I had hiked not even 50 metres when I slipped and fell. I sprained my ankle and had
bruises on my leg and hands. It was so painful that I could not even stand up, let alone walk.
My worst nightmare came true. There was no one around. I had to shout for help for almost
30 minutes before another hiker came. He took me to a nearby clinic for treatment. Thank
goodness I did not fracture my feet. I certainly learnt a lesson on that day.

2. The writer’s mother advised him not to hike on that day because

A. It would be his worst nightmare.
B. There would be no one hiking at that time.
C. It could be dangerous as it had rained earlier

You are going to read an extract from an article. For questions 19 to 26, choose the correct answer (A,
B, C or D) and mark the correct letter A, B, C or D on your own answer sheet.

1 Camping is an elective outdoor recreational activity. Generally held, participants leave developed

areas to spend time outdoors in more natural ones in pursuit of activities providing them enjoyment.

To be regarded as ‘camping’ a minimum of one night is spent outdoors, distinguishing it from day-

tripping, picnicking and other similarly short-term recreational activities.

Camping may involve sheltering in the open air, a tent, caravan, motor home, or primitive 5

2 structure. Luxury may be an element, as in early 20th century African safaris, but including

accommodations in fully equipped fixed structures such as high-end sporting camps under the banner

of camping blurs the line. As a recreational activity, it became popular among elites in the early 20th

century. With time, it grew more democratic and varied. More participants frequent publicly owned

natural resources such as national and state parks, wilderness areas, and commercial campgrounds. 10

Camping is a key part of many youth organizations around the world, such as scouting, which use it to

teach both self-reliance and teamwork.

Every year, thousands of people head to the beautiful forests, mountains and beaches to camp.

Camping may mean different things to different people. To some, it can be a walk in the wild

3 outdoors. To others, it is a stay of a few days amidst nature. Camping is an inexpensive alternative to 15

the vacations many families would like to take but cannot afford.

Camping equipment runs the gamut from simple family tent and sleeping bags to the most

elaborate travel trailer or motor home. For your first trip, try renting gear or borrowing one from

4 acquaintances with camping experience. That way, you can see if your family is suited to the great

outdoors without investing much money. Whatever it is, give your camping trip more thought and 20

effort and you will eliminate many of the lurking dangers. The big question that comes to mind is

‘What to pack?’

The ‘Big Seven’ when it comes to camping equipment the ‘Big Seven’ are: a map and

compass, water and water treatment kit, extra food, extra clothing, a first-aid kit, a knife, waterproof

5 matches and a fire starter. Basic gear includes a sleeping bags, groundsheet, tent with sealed seams and 25

rail-fly sheet, complete with all poles, stakes and cord.

Besides the basic gear, we need to make sure of some extras like headlamp, a raincoat, and

trekking poles. Your first aid kit should include bandages, medications for common ailments and

6 tweezers. Bring some salt if you think there might be leeches. Spare batteries and flares might come in

handy. You have to anticipate all weather conditions. So pack enough under-clothes and loose 30

lightweight light coloured clothes. Bring drawstring pants and leech socks to protect yourself against

the bloodsuckers. Wear long pants and cover your body and head against sand flies and mosquitoes

and bees.

When camping, follow these golden rules. Camp on bare ground where possible and the site

should be away from trails and dead trees. Avoid slopes, high ridges and wet sides. Do not choose 35

7 campsites that are below the flood level or are frequented by wildlife. Set up camp as early as possible

and familiarize yourself with the surroundings. This helps to prevent injuries from moving about in the

dark.

Another golden rule is to make sure that you bring enough food to last the trip. The food can

be fresh, dried or canned. Avoid bringing any food with a strong smell. You will need at least two 40

8 litres of water per person per day. Use water from a natural source such as a spring. Make sure all

water is boiled to eliminate bacteria and contamination. Build your fire away from the tent. Do not

cook inside the tent, even if you are using a gas canister. You should never burn rubbish, especially

plastic, for the fumes are toxic. Make sure the fire is completely put out before you break camp. Do

remember your camp etiquette. 45

A cook stove is a nice accessory for fixing breakfast although eggs and bacon can be cooked

in an iron skillet over the coals. Pancakes are traditional camping fare and can also be cooked over

9 coal. Lunches are usually serve-yourself affairs at the campsite. They should be of no hassle as

there are many things to do for the rest of the day at the campsite.

Question 27 to 32

You are going to read a short story titled ‘Jack and the Bean Stalk’. Six sentences have been
removed from the article. Choose from the sentences A to H the one which fits each gap (27 to 32).
There are two extra sentences which you do not need to use. Mark your answer on the separate answer
sheet.

Once upon a time there lived a poor widow and her son Jack. One day, Jack’s mother told him to
sell their only cow. Jack went to the market and on the way he met a man who wanted to buy his cow.
(27) The man answered, “I will give you five magic beans!” Jack took the magic beans and
gave the man the cow. But when he reached home, Jack’s mother was very angry. She said, “You fool!
He took away your cow and gave you some beans!” She threw the beans out of the window. Jack was
very sad and went to sleep without dinner.

The next day, when Jack woke up in the morning and looked out of the window, he saw that a

huge beanstalk had grown from his magic beans! (28) . There lived a giant and his wife. Jack

went inside the house and found the giant’s wife in the kitchen. Jack said, “Could you please give me

something to eat? I am so hungry!” The kind wife gave him bread and some milk.

While he was eating, the giant came home. The giant was very big and looked very fearsome. Jack

was terrified and went and hid inside. The giant cried, “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of an

Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” The wife said, “There

is no boy in here!” So, the giant ate his food and then went to his room. (29) . .Then he went to

sleep. In the night, Jack crept out of his hiding place, took one sack of gold coins and climbed down

the beanstalk. At home, he gave the coins to his mother. His mother was very happy and they lived

well for some time.

Climbed the beanstalk and went to the giant’s house again. Once again, Jack asked the giant’s wife

for food, but while he was eating the giant returned. (30) . The giant cried, “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I

smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!”

The wife said, “There is no boy in here!” The giant ate his food and went to his room. There, he took

out a hen. He shouted, “Lay!” and the hen laid a golden egg. When the giant fell asleep, Jack took the

hen and climbed down the beanstalk. Jack’s mother was very happy with him.

After some days, Jack once again climbed the beanstalk and went to the giant’s castle. For the
third time, Jack met the giant’s wife and asked for some food. Once again, the giant’s wife gave him
bread and milk. But while Jack was eating, the giant came home. “Fee-fi-fo-fum, I smell the blood of
an Englishman. Be he alive, or be he dead, I’ll grind his bones to make my bread!” cried the giant. (31)

.

The giant had a magical harp that could play beautiful songs. While the giant slept, Jack took the

harp and was about to leave. Suddenly, the magic harp cried, “Help master! A boy is stealing me!”

The giant woke up and saw Jack with the harp. Furious, he ran after Jack. But Jack was too fast for

him. (32) . The giant followed him down. Jack quickly ran inside his house and fetched an

axe. He began to chop the beanstalk. The giant fell and died. Jack and his mother were now very rich
