The Chancellor talked of falling inflation and the pathway for interest rate reductions by the Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), starting this month (18 March). Good news! … This was delivered and received with warm recognition from her oh-sofinancially informed back-benchers. In addition, she talked of security to household budgets and of an increasingly affordable energy market. Fair weather ahead.It was a [deliberately] low-key economic statement set against a backdrop of rising unemployment and a downgraded economic forecast, so it was always going to be critiqued. However, on this occasion, her economic update was roundly ignored. Much of her statement, similar to the closing paragraphs of last month’s Beacon article, was out of date before it was in the public domain. Following the engagement in the Middle East we have witnessed huge jumps in commodity prices that will inevitably and unfortunately feed through to goods and services – for example, Brent is up circa 53% in the month and UK gas prices are up over 73% (as at 16 March). The ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, (between Iran & Oman) which transports c. 20% of the world’s liquefied gas and on average17 million barrels of oil per day, is a key factor in this price escalation. The immediate impact is the lift in prices at the petrol pumps, and the sharp rise (c. 100%) in the costs of oil fuelled heating (no OFGEM capped pricing exists in this market). Then there’s the impact on day-to-day logistics and raw materials that will invariably find their way into prices later in the production line. These are the same inflationary factors that the UK endured following the Russian invasion of sovereign Ukraine, and that saw inflation peak at 11.1% in October 2022. War has a wide-reaching cost! …BUT, we’re not rationing or sheltering under our dining table like generations before us!In response, lenders have lifted the costs of mortgages and loans. Furthermore, the bond markets (usually seen as a stable investment) have been rattled and as a result yields have been volatile as stakeholders assess the depth of the ongoing crisis. Stocks and shares too have taken a downward turn as they absorb the sentiment of the world’s investors and institutions. Trump’s end goal and the prospect of contagion across the region the unknown and primary concern. It is helpful to step back during periods of uncertainty such as this … where are we and what is the wind direction? The financial markets remain high – FTSE100 is over 10,300 points (as at 17 March) – and investors continue to benefit from capital appreciation on a year-on-year basis, as well as perennial dividend income. In addition, many cash accounts continue to outstrip inflation; UK inflation was 3% to January 2026 and our clients benefit from easy access accounts in excess of 3.6% and fixed interest returns exceeding 4%. The forecast remains unclear and prone to rapid shift, but savers and investors have choices ... the capacity for loss, timeframe, liquidity and peace of mind are important considerations.
