And say hello to Octopus.
Octopus loves to read books,
but he has a problem. The
ocean is too dark. He can’t see.

Orly'

Orly is determined to find a
solution for her friend. Octopus
is grateful….and hopeful. Let’s
find the best solution!

Orly spends all Orly%
day

brainstorming
ideas.

She thinks of many solutions,
but nothing is quite right.
Until….

Finally, she’s got it! Fireflies!

In scuba gear, of course.

Orly‘s collages change. In this picture, it
includes a brown bag, a pink shirt, and blue
sky. Do you think anything else was used
and, if so, what? What do you think was used
in her other collages?

Did you know Octopuses can change color?
Not only can they change color, but they also
like to play, are very intelligent, and can grow
to be 30 feet or more!

Despite their name, fireflies aren’t actually
flies. They are a type of beetle with the ability
to light up. It appears that fireflies utilize their
bioluminescence to communicate with others
and scare off predators.

Similar to fireflies, jellyfish are a type of
bioluminescent species. You might think the
main difference is that they live in water, but the
larvae of some fireflies live underwater too!

The jellyfish depicted in this book are somewhat
small, but some jellyfish can be 8 feet across
and even have tentacles reaching 100 feet! Just
imagine the books Octopus could read! What
type of jellyfish do you think were used in this
book?

Many other items were used to create the
collages in this book. If you look closely, you’ll
find shells, seaweed, sand, and driftwood. What
else do you see? You can learn how to create
your own collages at www.saravidetto.com.

Sara Beth Videtto is a children’s book author/

illustrator from Connecticut. When she is not
taking pictures or collaging worlds between
covers, she enjoys spending time with her family
and their awesome pets. She grew up in New
Hartford and Colebrook, CT, but no matter where
she is, San Francisco is always home. Her
collages are inspired by her father and great
grandfather’s love for veneer woodworking.
When she writes, she writes with her own children in mind,
along with her former kindergarten, first grade, and third
grade students, and all the children she has had the pleasure of
meeting in life.
