PRELIMINARY

Dato' Onn Jaafar was a Malay politician
who served as the seventh Menteri Besar
(Chief Minister) of Johor in Malaya (now
Malaysia). Futhermore, he was the founder
of United Malays National Organisation
(UMNO) and was also responsible for the
social and economic welfare of the Malays.

01

BIOGRAPHY

Dato' Onn Jaafar was born on 12 February 1895 in Bukit Gambir, Jalan
Gertak Merah, Johor Bharu and died on 19 January 1962. He was the third of
seven sons and seven daughters. His father Datuk Jaafar bin Haji Muhammad
was the first Menteri Besar of Johor during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim.
Datuk Jaafar is of Bugis descent and comes from Daik. His mother named
Roquaiya Hanim (also spelled Rogayah Hanim or Rukiye Hanım), is from the
Middle East, of Turkish descent. Dato’ Onn was cared for by Sultan Ibrahim
as his adopted child since he was six years old.

02

EDUCATION

Dato’ Onn Jaafar started his education in a Malay
school in Johor Bahru. Before being sent to England,
he was raised by an English woman with Tunku
Mahkota Ismail, Tunku Abu Bakar and Tunku Ahmad
at the age of nine. In 1903, he went to England to
attend Aldeburgh Lodge School, a private school for 6
years. He excelled in sports and captained the school’s
cricket and football teams.

After completing his studies in England, he returned to
Malaya and was enrolled in the Malay College Kuala
Kangsar (MCKK) where he studied there for two years
from 1910 to 1911. The reason he enrolled in MCKK
was the need to improve his Malay language
proficiency that had weakened considerably following
his time in England.

Dato' Onn had served as a District the special rights of the Malays and the

On 1 October 1946, Dato’ Onn was appointed
Menteri Besar of Johor. Three years later, he
resigned to devote his time to UMNO. Under his
leadership, UMNO succeeded in forcing the
British government to dissolve the Malayan Union
and replaced it with the Federation of Malaya.
The Federation of Malaya 1948 retained the
position of Malay Rulers and tightened the
conditions of citizenship, as well as granting
Malay special rights.

Dato’ Onn later expressed frustration with what he considered UMNO's racist policies,
and suggested that the party membership be opened to all Malayans, regardless of
race, and the name UMNO was changed to "United Malayan People's National
Organisation". As the proposal was opposed, Dato’ Onn resigned as UMNO president
when the Conference of the Sixth General Meeting was held on 25 - 26 August 1951.

Dato’ Onn later formed the Malayan Independence Party (IMP) on August 26, 1951.
Unfortunately, the party received no support from the Malays. In 1954, he left the
party to form the National Party for the purpose of contesting the first general election
in the Federation of Malaya in 1955. The National Party restricted non-Malay
membership in an attempt to gain support from the Malays. Nevertheless, his party
still failed to gain support and did not win any seats in the election. However, Dato’
Onn is still trying to gain a place in politics. In the 1959 general election, he won a seat
in the South Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency.

05

CONTRIBUTION

Dato’ Onn Jaafar who is the founder of independence had established the Association of Johor
Malay Peninsula as the President. He had successful promoted Malaysian unity to resist the
Malayan Union State program.

06

LEADERSHIP
VALUE

WE HAVE TO LEARN FROM PREVIOUS
LEADER.

The leadership value that can be learned by the
current generation is making a difference. Dato’
Onn Jaafar had established UMNO that aims to
insist on fighting for the dignity of the nation,
religion and country; at the same time, it is also
committed to defending Malay culture as a national
culture and defending and developing Islam in
Malaysia.

Futhermore, we must also be respectful to each
others. We have to accept the decision that has
been done, do not be mad if the decision is not
favoured. For example, Dato’ Onn Jaafar left the
UMNO after Independence of Malaya Party (IMP)
failed to receive sufficient backing from Malayans.

07

CONCLUSION

In an ideal Malaysia, Malays and non-

Malays could work hand in hand. Malaysia

would be a promised land where those who

worked hard would be promised a future.

But instead, UMNO used racism as a

technique to control the majority and

remain in power. The same way the blacks

were marginalized in America and the

Romans disparaged Christians, UMNO used
