VISION ABOUT WHO
WE ARE

3

YWAM Kyiv is focused on
Kyiv, Ukraine and Eurasia.
We DEVOTE ourselves to
preaching the gospel, we
CULTIVATE empowered and
missions minded Christ
followers and we RENEW
the lives of the broken.

IMPORTANT TO US

1. We are a community of people that seeks God in prayer.

We want to move in partnership with God. Everything we do starts with seeking
God’s will in prayer, we cover with prayers each other, the people to whom we
minister, and all of our projects.

2. We are a community of transformational and interconnected
ministries and schools.

God has empowered each one of us with unique giftings and callings. We
believe that by enriching each other we can achieve more and be more
effective in our ministries. We do not work alone or only in our sphere. We
believe that only together can we fulfill the Great Commission.

4 3. We are a community committed to having Christ like character.

VALUES We want to reflect the joyful light of Jesus. We want to be hardworking, honest,
humble, generous, and compassionate in everything we do.

4. We are a community who love and celebrate each other.

Every one of us has ups and downs in life. We support each other in our
weaknesses and we celebrate each other’s achievements. It is love among us
that shows the world that we are His true followers.

5. We are a community with a servant heart for Ukraine.

We serve in Ukraine, therefore we want to understand, respect, value and love
Ukrainian culture and its people.

6. We are a community committed to developing each other and
ourselves.

We want to be effective in our ministry and understand God’s calling. We want
to be adventurous, global minded, up-to-date, diverse in our perspectives,
strong in God’s Word, and always put in effort to grow.

A MESSAGE TO OUR STAFF

5

We are excited to see what God is doing in and through us here at YWAM Kyiv. If God has or is calling you to join this
community of missionaries, we trust that you will find joy and courage for the task ahead.

We will do our best to create a wonderful place for you to serve, and we trust that God will continue to grow and strengthen our
ministry among the nations. If you ever have any questions or need help with anything, come and ask! We are here for you.

Love in Christ, Kyle and Anya Schlegel (base leaders)

YWAM Kyiv was founded in 1993 by a DTS team from New York. Over the years many different ministries have been launched
and many people have found the love of God. Much of YWAM Kyiv’s initial ministry was done on the island of Rusanivka
located in the city on the left bank.
Due to a generous donation, the restaurant/hotel boat you see below was purchased in 2004 and then became the main ministry
location for many years. At the same time, a 10 acre property on the banks of the Dnieper river was also purchased and construction
began on ‘The Loft’ and on ‘The Table’.
In 2011 the government required the boat to be moved, and it was floated down the river to the current YWAM missions center
where it has been transformed into one of our buildings. Though it doesn’t float in the water anymore, we still lovingly call it ‘The
Boat.’ The first training program at the Missions Center was in 2011 and it has kept growing every year. God has been faithful through
it all!

YWAM KYIV HISTORY

YWAM KYIV 7
FUTURE

300 Students
200 Staff

This perspective drawing created by Baust
Architects from gives a picture of what the
future property at YWAM Kyiv Missions
Center will look like, complete with a Family
Education Center, a café, multiple
classrooms, a gym, conference center, camp
housing, apartments for singles, couples and
families, and more. We also work with 100
Fold in YWAM Lakeside who give insight
along the way. Each phase will take time,
prayer, and finances. Please pray with us for
this future of reaching people in Kyiv, Ukraine
and Eurasia through many different training
programs and ministries here at YWAM Kyiv.

8 YWAM KYIV STRUCTURE

Each staff with YWAM Kyiv is encouraged YWAM KYIV
to focus on a MAIN MINISTRY in order to STRUCTURE
have a team and not feel lost in the
community. When someone applies to 9
come on staff with YWAM Kyiv, they
specifically apply to join a ministry team
circle. Both the leadership team and the
circle team are a part of the approval
process for a new staff member.

We are also a community that seeks to serve
each other in our ministries and in the
upkeep and organization of YWAM Kyiv.
Therefore, when someone applies to come
on staff, we also ask them to choose
different COMMUNITY CARE areas that
they would enjoy being a part of (such as
hospitality, housekeeping, kitchen etc.).

We ask each of our staff to contribute 3
hours a week to a community care task
outside of their main ministry. The
community care departments leader will
look at the needs of the community, and the
desires of the staff member when assigning
each new staff a community care task.

This helps all of us to not have an esteemed
view that our ministry is the most important,
it helps us to care for our property, and it also
encourages fellowship and relationships
outside of our main ministry circle.

10 LEADERSHIP

THIS IS YWAM Kyiv is led by base leaders with a team around them to
HOW WE help the process of decision making and carrying out the
WORK implementation.

The core leadership team consists of around 6-8 people and can be
changed from time to time.

The process of team expansion is considered prayerfully and involves
all staff. Staff submit their suggestions of possible candidates from
the current staff members.

After their expressed suggestions, the core leadership team prays
whether the candidates and timing is appropriate.

The next step is giving an opportunity for a candidate to themselves
consider and pray into the matter. If the chosen candidate has
agreed to join the team, we bless them in prayer with new
responsibility and a new role.

Each member of the leadership team partners with one or more of
our base departments as a leadership team liaison.

HOW WE WORK 11

We want your experience working with YWAM Kyiv to be one of joy, growth and happiness! We also recognize that
a big part of that is clear expectations and hearts that are humble and ready to serve.

All our guidelines and policies are meant to be a blessing and to provide boundaries, not to be something that hinders
someone from hearing God’s voice and obeying. Please recognize there is always grace and flexibility in our community.

STATUS CHANGE 13
WORK
EXITS
Evaluations: We desire our staff to take to
look back and ahead at their life in ministry so
that they can continue to grow, process, and
improve. Every staff member will do a self-
evaluation after their first 6 months on staff
and then yearly after that. This evaluation will
be done with a member of the leadership
team or the personnel department.

Transfers: If a staff member wants to transfer
from one circle to another, the individual
should begin by communicating with their
Circle Leader. The Leader will then talk with
the Personnel Manager and begin the
process.

Status Change: If a staff member wants to
take a leave of absence, do a YWAM school, or
change their work schedule, their Circle
Leader and the Personnel Department will be
involved in walking them through the change.

Exits: When a staff member is considering
leaving YWAM Kyiv, they should talk and pray
with their Circle Leader and the Personnel
Department six months in advance of when
they would plan to leave. Staff exiting
documents will need to be completed. This
includes personal processing, debriefing with
a leadership team member, and a time to
share and be prayed for with the YWAM
community.

WORK AND RELATIONSHIPS

FAMILIES When both a husband and wife are on staff with YWAM Kyiv, with one or
more children not yet in school (ages 0-6), they then have the freedom to
share the 10 -12 blocks per week however they see fit. This insures one
parent has the time to be with the child (ren) during the very important
early years. It is required that one parent attends staff meetings, family
nights and worship/intercession, but we encourage both to attend
whenever possible. We also require both parents to stay up to date with
announcements and staff fees.

16 We trust this will be a blessing to our YWAM families and help with
raising healthy kids.

More information regarding children, expectations, and staff events can
be found on our staff website.

We love and celebrate the fact that God designed man and woman to be in a DATING
beautiful and mutually edifying exclusive relationship! Many married couples
have met in YWAM and it is our privilege to watch God’s hand bring people
together.

We also realize that because of sin in our world, it has affected the realm of
relationships. There are temptations and ways that exclusive relationships
can make others feel uncomfortable. We have developed guidelines to help
the relationships that God has brought together flourish in the healthiest way
for the couple and everyone in the community.

Each stage of our life has different purposes, and because of this we have developed 17
some different guidelines depending on the situation. However, one guideline that
applies to all situations: please do not be alone in a dorm room on the campus with a
member of the opposite sex without having the door open. This will prevent
temptation and rumours.

DTS students

Please realize that God can has called you for 5 months to help you develop in your
character and in your relationship with Him. It is also a time to pursue whether God is
calling you long-term into missions. We would like you to refrain from pursuing an
exclusive relationship during these 6 months. If however, you are feeling that God
may be bringing you into a relationship with a student or staff of your DTS, please
communicate openly with your leaders to determine the next steps during your DTS.

Second Level Schools and Staff

Relationships can develop during a school or staffing and this is exciting and
wonderful! Please use wisdom as the relationship develops. Physical affection is
normal but needs to be tempered with the fact that singles can feel very
uncomfortable in the presence of physical contact between couples. It is also a
temptation to cross boundaries that are meant only for married couples. Please seek
accountability from leadership or friends that you trust. Openness is very important
and keeps the relationship healthy. If you feel it needs to be secretive you may need
to consider whether this relationship is truly from God.

“It is not good for man to be alone” is something that God spoke even before the fall.
Relationships really are a gift from God and marriage is a beautiful picture of Christ
and the church. We hope many find their spouses during their time with YWAM Kyiv,
and we long to see these relationships start out healthy and strong!

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to talk to a member of the leadership
team.

Within the YWAM family we are called to live and work together in CHALLENGES
humility and harmony exemplifying right relationships. This requires
a lifestyle of openness and transparency with each other. When there
is a conflict with an individual (including a leader) it should be taken
care of on an individual basis with that person, quickly and quietly in
the local context and situation.

Should there be instances where help is needed to mediate then this
should be in like manner through friends and relationships that can see
a suitable resolution. The teachings of Jesus in Matthew’s gospel in
chapter 5 and 18 give clear principles to us as his followers to walk in right
standing and relationship with each other. YWAM leaders consider this
to be adequate encouragement to fulfil and follow this relationship
approach to solving difficulties and conflicts.

Biblical Responses to Conflict
18 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of

peace.” Ephesians 4:3

OVERLOOK an incident if you can answer “no” to these questions:

 It is dishonoring to God? Romans 2:21-24

 Has it damaged your relationship?

 Is it hurting other people? Luke 17:2-3, 1 Corinthians 5:6

 Is it hurting the offender? Proverbs 19:11; Colossians 3:13

GO and communicate with other people after you have prepared your
heart and made sure the incident cannot be overlooked. Matthew 5:24;
Ephesians 4:25; Matthew 18:15

GET HELP from the leadership team, an advisor, a facilitator (mediator)
or a wise person if you need assistance or if going by yourself didn’t work.
Proverbs 12:15; 1 Corinthians 6:4-5

PROGRESSIVE COACHING

All YWAM Kyiv staff are expected to maintain Christian character and values and to adhere to the guidelines of this manual.
Those who do not may expect to be approached by leadership to discuss spiritual growth, self-discipline, accountability, or
mentorship. If the issue remains unresolved, further action may be taken by leadership.

The goal of progressive coaching is to see growth and change in behaviour in alignment with our values. We also desire to restore
to full community and fellowship.

When a YWAM staff’s behaviour is not in alignment with our values as a community and as a mission:

Step 1) Their circle leader will talk with them, give them specifics as to what is wrong, and provide help and support to 19
see the behaviour change.

Step 2) If the behaviour continues then their circle leader and another key base leader will meet with them. The staff
member is also encouraged to bring a friend or ministry coworker to the meeting if they would like. Together they will
develop an action plan in order to help change the behaviour (this may include regular prayer and accountability,
counselling, reading a book on the subject etc.) This action plan will be put in writing by the staff member and copies
will be given to them, their circle leader and the base leaders.

Step 3) After 3-6 months of following the action plan (during this time they may be removed from leadership or ministry
all together), the leaders from the previous meeting along with the staff member will meet to assess growth. Further
action may still be needed or else the issue may be resolved.

However, if there has been no change or the action plan has not been followed then:

Step 4) The Base Leader, their circle leader, and the YWAM staff member meet and find a gracious way to release the
person from staff. The goal is always to let the person leave with dignity and respect.

However, if it was an offense of which the whole community was aware, then the reason they were asked to leave may
be announced publicly.

*Important* If throughout these steps the YWAM staff member does not feel they were treated fairly, they are welcome
and encouraged to contact the regional leaders to make a complaint.

PROTECTION

For your safety, we recommend no one be out alone after midnight. We advise
women not to be out alone after 10pm. Guys, please be courteous of this and
take care to walk single women home after dark. Also, we advise everyone to
be aware of their belongings on public transportation.

For the safety of our children we have implemented a Child Protection Policy,
each staff, student, and team member is required to read and sign our child
protection policy (leaders in the different areas will ensure this takes place).
20 This is to help create a wonderful and safe place for children here at YWAM
Kyiv.

Intensive Ministry Leave

Staff are offered special leave after an intensive ministry to help them rest.
Weekend Seminar: If a Seminar is over a weekend including nights we encourage staff to take the following Tuesday as a
day off, due to the Monday mandatory requirements.
School Leaders, outreach staff & staff for schools longer than 6 months: Following the completion of a school we offer 5
days of special leave to adjust back into the community and rest. All mandatory staff events are required including Monday

Please note: This time must be taken immediately following the program and cannot be “saved up” for a later time.
If after this special leave you continue to feel unrested or stressed please discuss this with your Circle Leader or Personnel.

Wedding Leave 27

Local wedding – special leave includes one week for wedding
preparation (parents on staff may also have this week off to be with
their children who are getting married) and two weeks for honeymoon.

International wedding - we recognize we are an international
organization and cross-cultural marriages often occur. Therefore, due to
the difficulty of distance we offer two weeks for wedding preparation.
(parents on staff may also have these two weeks off to be with their
children who are getting married) and two weeks for honeymoon.

Please be sure that you clear your time with your Circle Leader and the
Personnel Manager.

Maternity Leave

Staff who are pregnant are entitled to two months before their due date and
six months after the birth of their child for maternity leave. At the conclusion
of the maternity leave, a meeting will be held with the staff member, her
Circle Leader and Personnel to discuss her return to full-time, part-time or to
take an additional leave of absence. We encourage all staff that are on
maternity leave to attend base wide events as they are able to continue in
fellowship and community with YWAM Kyiv.

Please Note: If more time is needed prior please consider using vacation
time. If this is not possible please speak with your Circle leader and
Personnel.

Sabbatical Leave

It is our desire to create, for long-term staff,
an extended period of time away from the
ministry for the purpose of keeping
themselves sharp for the “long haul”.

This option is available for staff members
who have been with YWAM for seven
consecutive years, with a minimum of two
of those years serving on the staff of YWAM
Kyiv.

Staff may apply for subsequent sabbaticals
every seven years thereafter.

All sabbatical proposals are reviewed and

28 approved by the Leadership Team and the
Personnel Manager.

Please review our Sabbatical Guidelines on
our staff website for further information.

Leave of Absence

A Leave of Absence (LOA) is extended and intentional leave given in exceptional circumstances, outside of the standard 3
weeks of annual vacation time. This leave time is granted for the following sets of circumstances: family emergency, health
issues, necessary maintenance of credentials i.e. teaching, nursing, etc., unusual and exceptional financial hardship, or
building a personal home.

When requesting a leave of absence, the staff member must first talk to their Circle Leader as well as Personnel Manager. You
will also be required to write up a specific action plan with a pre-determined time frame.
