ABSTRACT
ART DECO
Art Deco, sometimes referred to as Deco, is a style
of visual arts, architecture and design that first
appeared in France just before World War I. It
influenced the design of buildings, furniture, jewelry,
fashion, cars, cinemas, trains, ocean liners, and
everyday objects such as radios and vacuum
cleaners. It took its name, short for Arts Décoratifs,
from the Exposition internationale des arts
décoratifs et industriels modernes (International
Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts)
held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco combined modern
styles with fine craftsmanship and rich materials.
During its heyday, it represented luxury, glamour,
exuberance, and faith in social and technological
progress.

Tamara kempicka, better known as Tamara de
Lempicka, was a Polish painter who spent her

portraits of aristocrats and the wealthy, and
for her highly stylized paintings of nudes.
ARTWORK 1 OF TAMARA DE LEMPICKA
THE MUSICIAN The Musician is one of Lempicka's genre
paintings. It draws on a distinctly
traditional theme: allegorical
representations of the arts. In this case,
music is depicted as a beautiful and
elegant, dark-haired woman, absorbed in
music-making. Lempicka was deeply
influenced by the Renaissance works she
saw in the Louvre Museum, among other
places, and this work might reference any
number of paintings from the period and
afterward. Indeed, as recently as the early
1900s and 1910s, the Cubists had made
musicians and musical instruments major
themes of their work.
Date: 1929
Style: Art Deco
Genre: portrait
ARTWORK 2 OF TAMARA DE LEMPICKA
Many artists had rebellious thoughts, and KIZETTE ON THE
they had their expressions through art. BALCONY
Tamara de Lempicka is one of the artists
who embraced Art Deco. Kizette on the
balcony depicts a young girl seated on a
chair, wearing a flowing grey dress, white
socks, and black leather shoes. Kizette
was her only child, and she had several
paintings of her. Several movements
popped up during the 1920s.
Expressionism, surrealism, dada, and Art
Deco helped to re-shape and re-define the
creative disciplines, including art. Lempicka
uses expressionism as the theme for
Kizette on the balcony. The painting tries
to emphasize the role a woman plays in
society through a subjective perspective.

ARTWORK 3 OF TAMARA DE LEMPICKA
Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish YOUNG LADY WITH
artist who is best known for her GLOVES
Art Deco portraits and stylised
nudes which blend refined cubism
with a neoclassical style. In 1929
she produced one of her most
famous paintings ‘Young Lady with
Gloves (Girl in a Green Dress)’.
Despite the distinct angularity of
the painting, De Lempicka has still
managed to make the fabric of the
girl's dress looks like it is moving in
the breeze. The streamlined
geometric shapes and metallic
surface also enhances the
sophistication of the woman.

ART DECO AESTHETIC
In the 1920s , his style morphed from the
Art Nouveau nature-inspired forms, to
more streamlined pieces to suit the Art
Deco aesthetic. He began to use more
materials typical of the Art Deco period,
like metal, chrome, ivory and enamel.
His glass pieces became more "opalescent,
produced by adding phosphates, fluorine
and aluminum oxide to glass in order to
make it opaque, and by adding tiny
amounts of cobalt to produce an internal
blue tint."

ARTWORK 1 OF JEAN DUNAND
DUNAND
Dunand worked in a variety of stylistic idioms ranging
from the pictorial to the abstract. During the 1920s,
Dunand, like many other designers, borrowed shapes
found in abstract paintings and applied them as
fashionable decoration to luxury objects. The vividly
colored geometric patterning on this vase emphasizes its
spherical form and typifies the sophisticated tastes of
the time.
