Donna Karan
New York
After co-designing Anne Klein for ten years,
Donna Karan launched, in 1985, her own line
with late husband Stephan Weiss. Based on a
foundation of “Seven Easy Pieces,” Karan’s first
collection included practical mix-and-match
separates that accentuated a woman’s curves.
Her name became synonymous with the New
York look and created a trend-setting, all-black
palette for ready-to-wear. She’s also credited
with popularizing the bodysuit. Her company
grew—as much by the designer’s instinct as by
any strategic business plan—to include
menswear, children’s apparel, beauty, home,
and accessories, and has enjoyed extreme
commercial success. In 1996, Donna Karan
went public, which netted the designer a
fortune but had mixed results on Wall Street.
The Donna Karan International company
includes her secondary label, DKNY. It was
bought by LVMH in 2001 for a reported $643
million. Today, Karan acts as chief creative
director.

SPRING 2018 READY-TO-WEAR
The one advantage of 2017’s incredibly rainy
British summer is that it was good for the gardens
—and for Sarah Burton’s Alexander McQueen
collection. When she and her band of textile
specialists took a day trip out of London to visit
Great Dixter house in East Sussex, its flower
borders were in spectacular bloom. The
photographs of what they saw filled walls in the
studio and set Burton off. “It was about
Britishness, being in the garden, and the healing
power of nature,” she said.

A RUN-DOWN ON WHAT'S TURNING UP
THIS WEEKEND CHICDAILYMAGAZINE.COM / JANUARY 2018
I started straightaway with my own brand, instead
of first designing for someone else. It was a crazy
thing to do. The creative part has always been
great, that is no problem. But I’ve had to learn to
take into account the marketing aspect—what
people want to wear—talking with salespeople,
like on the floor at Barneys. The business side of it
has been a learning experience.

Natacha
Ramsay-Levi
The first Chloé collection under the creative direction of
Natacha Ramsay-Levi hit the runway here Thursday,
marking the newest chapter in the 65-year-old fashion
house’s history with a range of pieces that spoke to
femininity, confidence and strength, and making the label
one to follow closely in upcoming seasons.
Before taking the helm at Chloé in April and replacing
Clare Waight Keller, Ramsay-Levi spent four years as
creative director for women’s ready-to-wear at Louis
Vuitton (under artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière with
whom she’d worked for 11 years at Balenciaga), and for
her debut Chloé collection she paid tribute to the history
of her maison and its founder Gaby Aghion.
“Chloé girls have a suave mix of sophistication and
humility; they are timeless but never conventional,”
Ramsay-Levi wrote in the show notes, “I wish to continue to
shape their course, staying true to the independent and
intellectual spirit of Gaby Aghion; to those who
perpetuated this democratic style, so resolutely feminine.
So joyful. Existing without boundaries or hierarchy.”
That meant a spring and summer 2018 collection with
recognizable references to the brand’s DNA — Victorian
dresses, equestrian details and a peculiar, but lovely, shade
of terracotta, to name just three — but with the boho
whimsy of the Waight Keller-era stripped away and
replaced with strong-shouldered confidence.
