VERBS

What is a verb?

Verbs are simply action words in a sentence, and they describe what subject is doing.

Verbs and nouns are the main part of any sentence or phrase and they are telling a story
about what is taking place, without a verb, thoughts cannot be properly conveyed

Even the simplest sentences can do this, for example this one.

Lee Walks

In fact, a verb can be a sentence by itself, with the subject, in most cases implied, such
as, Run and Drive.

At school we are taught that verbs are ‘doing’ words, that means they are the part of the
sentence which tells you the action taking place:

Sue caught the ball.

The cat sat in the window.

Close the door!

So, caught, sat and close are the ‘action’ parts so they are the verbs.

But it can be confusing because not all verbs are recognized by action:

“I know where you live” the man said, Anna thought about it, imagining all the possibilities.

These are non-action verbs, they describe how you are, your physical or mental action,
emotion, possession, sense or opinion. Click here for some common non-action verbs
examples.

VERBS

So how do you recognize a verb?

As you have seen already the one clue to help you recognize a verb is where it is placed in
the sentence, compared to the subject.

Verbs almost always come after a noun or pronoun. These nouns and pronouns are referred
to as the subject.

The verb thought comes after the noun Anna, so the action Anna (subject) was taking
thinking (verb).

“after Noun

May finished her homework quickly so May went to the movies. or pronoun”

Just ask yourself,” What is happening?” May went to the movies, so went is the verb
remember.

There are some other ways to recognize verbs in a sentence:
If you’re not sure if a word is a verb, ask yourself, can I DO THIS? Whatever this is

REGULAR AND IRREGULAR VERBS

Regular verb: A verb that follows standard patterns in its inflection.

The past tense of a regular verb is formed by adding an -ed

end, end ed:

SHOUT-ED walk, walk ed;
shout, shout ed.

SHOUT

Irregular verbs: Verbs that don’t take on the regular –d, -ed, or -ied spelling patterns of
the past simple or past participle. Many of the irregular simple and past
forms are the same, such as:

cut – cut,
had – had,
let – let,
hurt – hurt,

fed- fed,

sold-sold

THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO LEARN ABOUT VERBS

Action verbs: Verbs that express action. Ex: run, walk, do, drive.
Auxiliary verbs:
These are used together with a main verb to show the verb’s
Stative verbs: tense or to form a negative or question, sometimes called
Modal verbs: helping verbs.
Semi Model:
Phrasal verb: Verbs that express a state rather than an action.

Verb tenses: A modal is a type of auxiliary (helping) verb that is used to
Gerund verb: express: ability, possibility, permission or obligation
Conjugation:
Infinitive: Used to express the same things as modals but are a
Passive voice: combination of auxiliary verbs and the preposition to.
Confusing verbs:
This a combination of words (a verb + a preposition or verb
+adverb) that when used together, usually take on a different
meaning to that of the original verb.

Verbs come in three tenses: past, present, and future.

A verb in its ing (present participle) form that functions as a
noun that names an activity rather than a person or thing

Conjugation is the change that takes place in a verb to express
tense, mood, person etc.

A verb form that acts as other parts of speech in a sentence. It
is formed with to + base form of the verb.

This used when we want to emphasize the action (the verb) and
the object of a sentence rather than subject.

Verbs that sound similar example: May, I may want a taxi later,
May I help you?
