Many, many moons ago I went to a Welsh speaking high school, Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold, and learnt Welsh as a second language. It was pretty intense with 9
hours per week of Welsh lessons in the first year. After that, everything was taught to us through the medium of Welsh – mathematics, history, even French. I
learned it up to A‐Level and got an A and I can still speak the language fluently now all these years later. That’s in spite of never having lived in a Welsh speaking area
and not spoken the language much with anyone in the years since.
That background of learning Welsh and knowing what’s important to learn and what can be blagged gave me an idea. I thought it would be handy to help those that
don’t know how to pronounce the language. That then developed into teaching other things about the nation that we’re helping through the Help To Buy (Wales)
scheme. And so Hyn a Hon was created.
The aim is to produce slides that can be read in no more than 20 seconds. It won’t teach people how to speak the language to any great extent but my hope is that it
will help people to pronounce scary looking words and place names such as Pontrhydyrun and Dwygyfylchi.
Above all else I hope it will be fun. If one person gets to know the correct Welsh word for microwave and when to parade through the streets with a dead horse’s
head on a stick then my mission will have been accomplished!
Llawer, lawer o leuadau yn ôl es i ysgol uwchradd Gymraeg, Ysgol Maes Garmon yn yr Wyddgrug, a dysgais Gymraeg fel ail iaith. Roedd yn
eithaf dwys gyda 9 awr yr wythnos o wersi Cymraeg yn y flwyddyn gyntaf. Wedi hynny, dysgwyd popeth inni trwy’r gyfrwng Gymraeg ‐
mathemateg, hanes, hyd yn oed Ffrangeg. Dysgais i hyd at Lefel A a chefais gradd A. Alla i dal siarad yr iaith yn rhugl nawr yr holl
flynyddoedd yn ddiweddarach. Mae hynny er gwaethaf na fu erioed yn byw mewn ardal Gymraeg a heb siarad llawer o’r iaith ag unrhyw un
yn y blynyddoedd ers hynny.
Fe roddodd y cefndir hwnnw o ddysgu Cymraeg a gwybod beth sy'n bwysig i'w ddysgu a beth y gellir blagio syniad i mi. Meddylais y byddai'n
ddefnyddiol i helpu'r rhai nad ydyn yn gwybod sut i ynganu'r iaith. Yna datblygodd hynny i ddysgu pethau eraill am y genedl yr ydym yn eu
helpu trwy'r cynllun Cymorth i Brynu (Cymru). Ac felly y crëwyd Hyn a Hon.
Y nod yw cynhyrchu sleidiau y gellir eu darllen mewn dim mwy na 20 eiliad. Nid yw’n dysgu pobl sut i siarad yr iaith i raddau helaeth ond fy
ngobaith yw bydd yn helpu bobl i ynganu geiriau ac enwau lleoedd brawychus fel Pontrhydyrun a Dwygyfylchi.
Yn anad dim arall, gobeithio y bydd yn hwyl. Os bydd un person yn dod i adnabod y gair Cymraeg cywir am ficrodon a phryd i orymdeithio
trwy'r strydoedd gyda phen ceffyl marw ar ffon yna bydd fy nghenhadaeth wedi ei chyflawni!
