BUNKER RENOVATIONS
Dear Members,
As the bunker remodel project progresses, we have had some questions about the work being completed and
the Capillary Concrete product, so we thought it would be beneficial to dedicate some time to provide you with
more information than what holes are closed each day/week.
As many of you know, all built facilities have a life cycle. When you near the end of the life cycle, things wear
out - roofs need replacing, siding needs restoring, pavement needs repair. Golf features: greens, tees,
irrigation, and bunkers are no different. When bunkers begin to age, life cycle-related challenges appear. These
include contaminated sand, poor drainage, and bunker sizes and shapes that have slowly morphed over time.
All these age-related factors affect playability and impact efficient bunker maintenance. Contaminated sand
affects the way the ball lands and lies, the way the clubface moves through the sand, and ball contact. Poorly-
drained wet sand also has similar effects. Bunkers can change shape over time due to sand splash, mowing
patterns, erosion, and other factors. Once the original shape, depth, slope, etc. changes, the design intent is
modified, and bunkers can become more penal or lose some of the intended strategies. The older the bunker,
the more time-consuming maintenance it requires for all the above reasons. Over the past few years, the
Capillary Concrete bunker liner system has proven to significantly improve these conditions.
Capillary Concrete is a patented product that is a strong and uniform concrete layer installed across the entire
floor of the bunker, on top of the earth subgrade, and below the sand. This special blend of concrete is porous
and allows water to drain efficiently to the bunker underdrain system. This system will have a direct benefit to
playability, particularly after a rain, providing dryer sand sooner and the minimization of sand washing down the
bunker faces. This system eliminates almost all erosion and ground-borne contamination in the sand. Bunker
slopes do not erode, and no dirt migrates up from the bottom of the bunker. Because the sand drains and stays
in place better (particularly after a rain), the time allocation for bunker maintenance is reduced, and overall
bunker life is greatly extended.
As part of the bunker renovation process, construction crews edge out the bunkers to return them to the
originally intended sizes and shapes. The bottoms of the bunkers are adjusted as needed to ensure a smooth
and uniform bottom, and the underdrain pipe system is replaced. This process leaves bunkers refreshed to the
original design, with new clean sand, precise edges, excellent drainage, and new sod surrounds as needed.
We've taken the time to film, in elapsed time, one of our bunkers undergoing renovation with the Capillary
Concrete product. You can find this video here, on the River Run Country Club Youtube page.
Thank you for your patience during this important upgrade project. The finished product is one that will be
enjoyed by all golfers, for years to come!
Regards,
Ross Adkins
Program Manager

We are a full month into spring league play with 7 WIC teams, 14 USTA teams, and 3 pickleball teams
competing in their respective divisions. League activity will continue through April and the first two
weeks of May, so book your courts early!
I know it is early, but we wanted to make sure you mark your calendars for the biggest annual tennis

The following week we are launching a new ladies' tennis clinic; Sorority Sisters. Every Thursday, 9:30 am - 10:30 am beginning April 7.

Starting Friday, April 29, and every last Friday of the month, we have our super fun Tennis and Pickleball 4D Nights! Drinks, Doubles,

Pickleball continues to grow in popularity each month, and our monthly PB 101 clinics are a terrific way to get an introduction to this
super fun sport so you can start playing! The clinics are on the second Wednesday of each month, this month it is Wednesday, April 13.

junior tennis academy
Hello River Run Families,
Spring is definitely here, and I hope everyone is getting outdoors as much as possible and enjoying
the warmer weather! Our spring programs are up and running right now, but we still have space
available in our red, orange, and green ball groups. If you're interested, don't hesitate to reach out
and we will happily prorate from your start date. Our summer schedule is also online, so check
RJ Murray the member website if you would like to find some activities for the kids this summer! The
Academy Director summer program will run for 10 weeks from June 6 to August 12. If you have a lot of trips
planned, we always offer daily drop-in rates for all programs, so feel free to drop in anytime
schedules permit. For all questions regarding Junior tennis programming, please email us at [email protected].
I would also like to give a big shout-out to all the Academy players that are competing for their high school and middle
school teams right now! They have spent a lot of time on the courts getting ready for their season, so hopefully, they feel like
all the hard work is paying off. It's great to see so many of our players representing their schools this time of year.
I would also like to do a player spotlight this month on Asia Mcrae. Asia has been working so hard this last year and is
having some outstanding results in tournaments lately. Asia has been fully committed to her training for the last ten
months, and it is paying off with some of the best wins of her career, including the best win last weekend in Gastonia in a
girls' 18 and under event as a 15-year-old. It's no accident that the results are starting to come after all of the hours and hard
work Asia has been putting in. She shows up to practice every day and gives it her all and as coaches, that's all we could ever
ask for. We are really proud of all the things she has accomplished, and all of the things she is going to do in the future. Keep
up all the hard work, Asia, we are proud of you!

How much aerobic exercise do you need?
The most recent Physical Guidelines for Americans recommends that we all get at least 150
minutes per week of moderate-intensity exercises. That amounts to about 22 minutes per day.
Heart health is dependent on consistency. The benefits will not be accrued unless these exercises
are done over an extended period of months. The trick? Find something you can stick with for
Eden Coiro the long term. It is unnecessary to be chained to a Peloton or a treadmill for those 150 minutes.

About the CKC I developed this program in March of 2020. It started with a small vision that has blossomed over time.
It started with a few event nights a month and has grown to our CKC Preschool, a Rising Star
program, and Summer Camps that accommodate 30 children daily. We also host Winter and Summer
passport programs where we accommodate 25 children per event, as well as dance classes, tumble
classes beginning this Spring, afternoon care, special holiday events, and so much more!
We have two lead teachers, Rose and Mariah, and one assistant teacher, Kaiyah (Kai). Rose also assists
me with day-to-day activities and behind-the-scenes work. I am truly honored as a Director to work
side by side with these ladies.
Jess Ash The CKC room where we host preschool is located at the Racquet and Sports Center. We offer
Director of Child Development preschool for children 18 months - 5 years of age. For ages 18 months - 2 years, we focus on fine motor
skills, words of everyday life (water, more, please, thank you, seat, table, and body parts), color
Founder of the CKC recognition, and stories to really engage the children. With this age group, we focus more on hands-on
activities.
For the 3-5 year-olds, we start to engage with numbers, letters, and phonetics. This includes tracing letters/numbers, using the sounds of
the letters, and counting to 20. We also work on patterns, organization, manners, using their existing knowledge and broadening it.
We have a program called "Rising Stars" that focuses on our transitioning Kindergarteners. This is only for 4 and 5-year-olds. During
this time, we work at their level and get them to kindergarten standards and beyond. We work more one-on-one, and have the children
learn at their own pace. The kindergarten standards include writing first and last name, writing and recognizing numbers 1-10 and all
letters, how to sound out words, simple addition, tying shoes, and much more! We work off of the K12 learning curriculum. There is
also a PE piece that we do during this time to teach the children about simple body anatomy and what parts of their bodies they are
using during certain exercises.
We are so blessed to work with these children each and every day and be able to enrich their lives and their minds.
