The Cerlificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is an initial teacher training course which consists of 200
guided learning hours including 6 hours of teaching practice. lt aims to enable candidates to:

- acquire essential subject knowledge and familrarity with the principles of effective teaching
- acquire a range of practical skills for teaching English to adult learners
- demonstrate their ability to apply their learning in a real teachtng contef .

Candidates who complete the course successfully can work in a variety of English language teaching contexts around the world.
Course content
There are five topic areas:

1. Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
2. Language analysis and awareness
3. Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
4. Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
5. Developrng teaching skills and professionalism

Assessment
There are two components. Component One: Planning and teaching. Component Two: Classroom-related written assignments.
Grades of award
Candidates who have fulfilled the course requirements and met the assessment criteria receive an overall grade (Pass / Pass B / Pass A)
An individual report which includes details of performance and achie!ement is produced for each candidate by the centre at which the
candidate completed the course.

Any alteration to this certificate renders it invalid and use of an altered cedtficate could constitute a criminal offence.
