Project

Recap

of the quarter

Everyday is children's day, when the
children are happy and blooming in the
warmth of their families. But that's quite
not the case for the children who are
affected by the Covid, even though the
date marks 1st of October.
'Thidasa Yathra' was a project of love
and humanity that was organised in
collaboration with the Covid Unit of
'Sirimavo Bandaranayaike Children's
Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya' for the
World Children's Day 2021 in order to fill
the wards with blooming smiles of the
children .
Our Leos travelled all the way there with
gifts and other prepared celebrations to
bring the joy of the Children's Day to
children who were getting treated at the
hospital. It was a day full of emotions
and fulfillment for all the Leos
participated as they were able to make
the day a bit more joyful for the children
who were struggling with declining
health and separation from their homes.
We all hope they will recover soon and
join their families to celebrate the
coming holidays.

6

Rare Diseases', from the label of 'rare'
that is given, one might wonder what's
so rare about them, and how hard it
would be on someone who's diagnosed
with one..
'Care for Rare' is informative webinar on
Rare Diseases and the issues and
challenges faced by those diagnosed
with them. Dr. Dineshani Hettiarachchi,
an expert on Rare Genetic Diseases in Sri
Lanka, was invited to conducted the
session to raise awareness on how rare
diseases and how to be a help to people
who are struggling with them. By this, we
hoped to raise awareness among the
communities in order to make it more
comfortable and bearable for those who
are truly affected by 'Rare diseases',
including those who are diagnosed with
them, and their families.

7

The "Viduwana" workshop, organised by
the Leo Club of the Faculty of Science,
University of Colombo, for students who
sat for the GCE Ordinary Level
Examination last year, who are still
waiting for the A / L exam without being
able to choose a subject stream.
Workshop was held on 17th October
2021 with 90+ participants, speakers well
explained and pointed out the
opportunities and paths that related to
each subject stream and It was a great
privilege for those who participated in
the workshop to build their future as
they wished.

Breast cancer is an incredibly difficult
disease to fight or to watch a loved one
go through. However, no one has to go
through it alone. The breast cancer
awareness program is a powerful way to
remind your loved ones that they have
the love, support, and drive they need to
fight this disease.

"One Team. One Dream. Let’s Find a
Cure."

Avenue of Women Empowerment and
Psychological Well-being of LEOUOCFOS
was able to do awareness programmes
via online platforms by publishing
notices on How to cure breast cancers
and develop the Health of Women in day
to day life. SNEHA was successfully able
to fulfil its massive mission on behalf of
the prevention of breast cancers by
conducting a webinar. Another step was
successfully completed to console the
burden lives suffering due to the
cruellest cells in the universe. We are so
grateful to Dr. Shyamali Pathirage, a well
experienced & qualified health care
journalist in Srilanka for spending her
valuable time on behalf of our project.

9

Domestic violence and sexual
harassment are the major social
problem in today world which lead
women's physical and mental health to
zero level. However, by going through
thick and thin she is standing in society
as she possibly can.

“Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid
to fail. Failure is another stepping stone
to greatness.”
- Oprah Winfrey.

NIHANDA AYA is all about equipping
women and allowing women to make all
the decisions related to their life through
the different problems in society. To
empower her soul, Avenue of Women
Empowerment and Psychological Well-
being of LEOUOCFOS was able to do an
awareness programme called NIHANDA
AYA via the zoom platform. This valuable
discussion session was done by Mrs.
Anjani Samaranayaka, LLB (Hons)
(England), Attorney-at-law, Certified HR
Auditor, Lecturer - CIPM, SLIM,
Facilitator/Resource by sharing her
valuable thoughts.

10

AROHA phase 01 webinar was held in
conjunction with the world's
international justice day on 17th of July
2021 on Zoom platform. The guest
speaker, a senior lecturer of UOC film
director screenwriter at havelock arts
studios former adviser at NSW
government Mr. Visakesa
Chandrasekara, given a better
understanding about our rights as a
citizen under the topic, Ignores the
common enemy of justice and science.

AROHA All Island Open Visual Arts
Competition was also held
simultaneously to the webinar for those
who were interested in art, digital art or
photography to showcase and enhance
their skills. Winners were gifted with
valuable cash prizes and valuable e-
certificates for all participants. Prizes
were sponsored by Saturated art store
and gallery as Platinum sponsor, Segar
gallery as Gold sponsor and
Newswave.lk as Silver sponsor.

11

Life of a university student has to be
balanced. In the midst of a pandemic
where academics get heavier, and there
aren't enough recreational activities to
compensate, Sterilizio came in to the
place.
Organised in the midst of the heavy
academic semester, Sterilizio was a night
full of excitement and joy. The game
night was specifically organised to bring
excitement and stress relief for the
fellow undergrads of FOS, UoC.
With participation of over 100 Leos, the
night was concluded a success.

12

Waterways are our planet’s life support
system. When we fill the rivers, lakes,
waterfalls and ocean with our trash, we
jeopardise our own health, the survival
of organisms.

Project Aquaphile is the Leo club of
UOC FOS's annual volunteer waterway
cleanup event that targets selected
waterways in the country that are
polluted with human trash and debris.
The mission of project Aquaphile is to
create awareness of and involvement in
the preservation of gorgeous water
resources in Sri lanka.

Aquaphile phase 01, the waterfall
cleanup was successfully held on 28th
November 2021 with the 30 volunteers
of the Leo club members. The selected
waterfall was the Kumari Ella located in
Puwakpitiya, Avissawella. After that,
Aquaphile phase 02 Beach cleanup was
held on 05th December 2021 with the 30
members of the club on the Jungle beach
Galle. The events were well organised
and held under relevant health
guidelines.

13

Religious and cultural activities console
our soles and pave the path to supreme
bliss. But, most of us being students,
learning under the financial support of
parents, do not have enough capability
to do the incredibles. However, the unity
of Leos in our club made it possible by
completing two such incredibles during
the month of Unduvap.

The project Sanda Arana was done in
two parts. The first one was an alms
giving to some loving elderly mothers in
Ayirin Thilakarathna elders home in
Gampaha. This was done in the Unduvap
full moon poya day remarking the
significance of doing such meritorious
deeds. The second part was a session of
chanting pirith wishing the betterment of
the Leo Club and its members since it
was the last month of the year 2021. The
project organizing committee was able
to collect a plentiful budget which was
also donated to the construction of the
Chethiya at the Athurugiriya Damdiya
Asapuwa, the place where the pirith
chanting was done.

14

"Manusath charika"- phase 01
Project "මනුසත් චාරිකා'' was organised
by the Leo Club of Faculty of Science,
University of Colombo, with the
collaboration of Official media partner
“APayy Radio”, one of the well-known
Radio in Sri Lanka, to weigh down the
burdens of a few selected families in
need from the Horana area.
Organisers received many donations
from Kind hearted philanthropists and
Collected financial and material
donations distributed among selected
poor families who are sheeping in bitter
poverty on 26th December 2021 with the
help of the Leo club members.

15

Responsibilities that are set on the
young generation are not just simple as
we can imagine. So, Youth needs
knowledge and advice to shape up their
personalities into souls of perfection that
qualify to take over these incredible
responsibilities.

"The youth of today are the leaders of
tomorrow"

Project 21st Youth organized by the
Avenue of Youth and Professional
Development of LEOUOCFOS was an
initiative that focused on this criteria.
The project was implemented in two
phases. The 1st phase consisted of the
goals; Youth vision, Network, Platforms,
Technology and Knowledge. The 2nd
phase consisted of a two day Python
workshop series.

Last, but not least we are so grateful to
Mr. Suranga Tennakoon, the leadership
training and motivational specialist in
Colombo Sri Lanka and Mr. Rahul
Kalubowila, BSc Hons, CIMA Adv Dip MA,
Dip in .NET, A graduate in Honours
Degree in Applied Statistics at the
University of Colombo who participated
as the guest speakers by spending their
valuable time on behalf of project 21st
Youth.

16

"Education is the most powerful weapon
which you can use to change the world."
With the words of Nelson Mandela,
education is the best way to overcome
the problems and change the world as a
student or man in Sri Lanka as a
developing country. The project 'SIPSARA
II' was conducted by Education Avenue
of LEOUOC⁩FOS.
Sipsara II was a maths seminar series
which was conducted throughout two
days in the Nelliyadi Central College
Jaffna. The main objective of this great
attempt to help the school students to
fulfill their dreams and to reach the
success of their life.

17

Joint
ventures

18

'A single act to bridge the gap between
man and nature,
Can save the breath of a whole
generation... '

Husma’21 was a joint effort of Leo Club
FOS, UoC and BEEZ Club of FOS, UoC in
order to deliver a wholesome webinar
series on Environmental Science
specifically for the G.C.E A/L's students.
All the aspects of Unit 8 in the Advanced
Syllabus was covered through the
webinar series conducted by the senior
lecturers of the Department of Zoology
and Environment Sciences, including
Prof. Devaka K. Weerakoon, Prof.
Deepthi Wickramasinghe, Prof. Erandathi
Lokupitiya, Dr. Sampath Senevirathne
and Dr. Devanmini Halwatura.

Apart from the academic aspect, the
participants were given with a
comprehensive knowledge about
conservation in general. With hopes for a
future where there's a lesser gap
between man and the nature, the event
was concluded successfully.

19

"Learn… Compete… Win…"

Project Meta+ is an educational and
entertaining experience to enlighten
university students of Sri Lanka on
Digital Media Marketing and
Entrepreneurship through a series of
workshops and competitions.
The project kicked start with an
introductory seminar resourced by a
panel of social media experts, giving
delegates awareness about the category,
along with the introduction to the
workshop series and the competition.
The first phase consisted of a three-day
online workshop series on Digital Media
Marketing empowered by experts in the
field. We are so grateful to Mr. Shawn
Moses, Mr. Tuhan Sapumanage, Mr.
Amila Dahanayake, Mr. Shavindu Avishka
& Mr. Hashan Uluwitiya for spending
their valuable time on behalf of our
project. This project was collaborated by
LEOUOC⁩FOS and EI Club of UOC.

“Mental health includes emotional,
psychological, and social well-being. It
affects how we think, feel, act, make
choices, and relate to others. Mental
health is more than the absence of a
mental illness—it’s essential to your
overall health and quality of life.”

Thus being knowledgeable about this
vital topic is a timely action that
everyone should follow. The November
phase of the continuous project
Blossoming Minds targeted that
objective. Leo Club of UOC FOS together
with Leo Club of Baththaramulla Synergy
was able to put their effort on this most
needed time initiative. Providing the
society with the most important theories
under this topic in a manner that they
would grab it easily is what we wanted
here. We hope the descriptive series of
posts and descriptions and the
interesting discussion with the well-
known psychologist Mrs.Rasini Bandara
helped us touch those major objectives
to their utmost.

21

Little kids love drawing and painting.
Colours colour their little world so
beautifully that they fly to their own
world while drawing. The art book & a
chalk box will be everything they need to
survive.

This does not differ to the blooming
buds with exceptional abilities. That is
why Leo Club of Raththanapitiya
organized the project Manos Amigos to
donate the Art books and Chalk boxes to
the kids of Nawodaya Special School in
Moratuwa. We are so much grateful to
the Leos of Raththanapitiya for inviting
Leo Club of UOC FOS also to join hands
with that memorable project.

With the contribution from both clubs
we were able to donate the books,
sponsor them a lunch and spend the day
with them singing and dancing. All the
participants felt this effort to their
deepest core because this project
brought smiles to the faces which were
in real need of it.

22

The blooming buds of today's world are
the owners of the future world. Even an
exceptionally abled little heart may have
that full potential and capacity to make a
change on behalf of the betterment of
everyone. We have visible examples of
such great souls who turned their fate
upside down and reached the sparkling
stars of life. What they need is a simple
push.

The project innocent hearts was planned
to provide some of the exceptionally
abled innocent souls in Sri Lanka, that
small push which will help them win
their life. By contacting the Ceylon
School for the Deaf and Blind situated in
Rathmalana we assessed whether there
are any required needs for the children
in school. And with the consent of the
officers in charge we were given a list of
required items to the school.

With the financial support of Lions of
Lions Club of Wellawaththa and the
donations of club members, we were
able to donate most of the items
requested. That day of giving hand to
make their life somewhat comfortable,
ended the first phase of project Innocent
Hearts, yet with many more hopes to
come up with the next phases.
