Sneha sathkara 05

“Sneha sathkara” was one of the greatest
projects of love and humanity organized by
the Leo club of faculty of science, University
of Colombo, with the collaboration with the
philanthropist that dedicated us to make this
project a success. This project was conducted
at Anula Wijerama Girls’ Child Development
Centre. This child development Centre is
dedicated to providing residential facilities,
education, nutrition, sanitation, and health. It
also provides patronage for about 34 girls
who need assistance and directs them to
become virtuous children. Our Leos reached
there with the special gifts and other
celebrity things to make their faces happier
with entertainment. Here they conducted an
eye clinic with the support of a medical
officer and took the necessary steps to
provide spectacles to the children with visual
disables. It was a day full of emotions and
fulfillment for all the Leos who participated in
that event, as they were able to make the day
joyful for the blooming buds. This project
emphasized the value of spreading love and
empathy.

Trash to Fashion was an e-waste
management project organized by LEOs. It
consists of an awareness program via social
media, an art competition for children at
Delana Silvathenna Vidyalaya, and a
campaign on the collection of e-waste and
handing it over to municipal councils for
recycling processes.

The awareness program was done by
designing flyers on four concepts of waste
management while the art competition was
held under 5 age categories on the topic, “E-
waste crisis”. The last part was the waste
collection campaign, carried out on 27th April
2022 at Gampaha and Kuliyapitiya, and
collected waste was handed over to
respective municipal councils for further
steps.

inima 08

“Self Belief and Confidence will always earn
you success.”

Sport has an inherent ability to bring people
together, in particular the youth, and yet until
recently, the tremendous potential of sport
for development to achieve youth
development objectives has been little
utilized. By its very nature, sport encourages
participation in bridging national, ethnic,
social and religious divides. It is precisely for
this reason that sport when used as a tool for
development, can serve as an impetus for
social transformation and change.

The project Inima which was organized by the
Sports Avenue of LEO UOC FOS was held at
Sri Saralankara Maha Vidyalaya in
Bandaragama.⁩ This program consisted of a
fitness program and a cricket match and the
sports equipment was donated to uplift the
cricket at the school level.

soyurudam 10

Project “Soyurudam” was organized by the
Leo Club of the Faculty of Science, University
of Colombo for the students of Delana
Silwathanna Vidyalaya. The main focus of this
project was to motivate the students by
rewarding them to their special
achievements. Here they provided the
students with all the necessary school
equipment. And special rewards were
afforded to the selected students with
financial hardships and for the students that
gained high grades in grade five scholarship
examination. The project was financially
aided by the club and with the financial
donations of some philanthropists.

This project was planned to uplift the
attitude of the students to motivate them in
their paths. And the Leos was able to open up
the way for them to see the world they
should win by overcoming the upcoming
obstacles through the heartfelt lecture
conducted by them. This is a project that

no more hunger - phase ii & iii 11

Getting one well-balanced meal on the table
every day, let alone three is a big challenge. It
gets even harder as you age. But, food is the
body’s fuel, and part of medicine too. For an
elder, good nutrition takes on even more
importance.
How children eat today can have a huge
impact on their health throughout
adolescence and adulthood. Eating food
containing important nutrients helps
children grow, and is essential for their
mental and physical development.
Project No more hunger Phase II & III was held
with the theme of "Let's be the generation to
reach zero hunger". We are able to create a
factual video series on nutrition for phase II
and donate plants to selected poverty
Stricken families on the 8th of May at galahad

"The compassion that Leoism shows to the
people we serve is an inspiration for every
Leo which can make a difference within the
community"

The project "Manos Amigos phase I" and
"Manos Amigos phase II" are beyond humbled
by the generosity of the two organizing
clubs, the Leo Club of University of Colombo
Faculty of Science and Leo Club of
Rattanapitiya to Empower the Differently
Talented Fellows.

In this project we bought a meaningful
discussion program with Yasal Nilmin
Samarajeewa who Inspired by the many
challenges he has faced in his life, seeks the
ladder of victory that changes the social
outlook of our own people with special
abilities. And simultaneously conducted a
conversational social conversation with Dr.
Tharindi Udalagama on the theme of "The
Beauty of Difference".

To strengthen our own visually impaired
community who are pursuing their education
at the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo
'Colorful Sounds', an audio book created for
the CSR, has been established at the
University of Colombo in conjunction with
the second phase of the 'Manos Amigos'

Preserve… Conserve… For a Tranquil planet
earth…
In the midst of the world economic crisis, the
importance of conservation of water,
electricity, and other resources has come into
the picture more than ever. Putting the
importance aside for a moment, it is our
responsibility to conserve such resources in
order to ensure a sustainable planet earth for
the decades and centuries to come.
With the above in mind, Project Precon was
launched to raise awareness on importance
of conservation and preservation of water
and electricity and promote such habits
within the community. This project was
consisted of an informative video series that
went along with the project’s ‘The Water and
Energy saving fortnight’ that was published
on our pages in platforms such as, TikTok,
YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram from 17th
April to 29th April, 2022. The video series had
tips on saving electricity and preserving
water, and proof that the participants
followed them were collected in the form of
photographs
A survey was conducted on electricity
consumption in households within the leo fos

nihanda aya - phase ii & iii 15

Nihanda Aya phase 2 was successfully
completed on 18th April and 3rd May. This
project was initiated with the aim of giving a
grocery pack to single mothers in low-
income families, for the new year season.
After raising funds and collecting enough
donations for the project, the grocery packs
were distributed among the low single
mothers living in Galle and Kadawatha areas.
With the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka,
it was a great help for these mothers, who are
struggling to provide the essentials to their
children.
As soon as phase 2 finished, phase 3 initiated
as an online project, where a platform was
made for the self-employed women, to
showcase their talents and indirectly
promote their products as a support for their
courage. Customized posts were published
on our official social media pages and then
the best self-employed woman was selected
through a judge board and was given a
valuable gift. The winner was announced on
the 12th May 2022.

yaman bando 16

As the second phase of the project “Aroha”, it
was initiated to address the society
regarding road regulations and road accident
prevention. Without using the typical
methods, a novel idea was initiated to make
TikTok videos, as episodes of a story,
presenting the road regulations to the
audience. The story was built up around a
funny main character called “Banda”, who has
traveled from the village to Colombo and is
unaware of the road rules. Under the layers
of humor there delivered great messages to
the society regarding the chosen topic,
through these videos.

And most importantly all the episodes were
scripted, cast, filmed, and directed by our own
Leos of LEO UOC FOS. It was a very fresh
experience for them too and together they all
gathered many sweet and unforgettable
memories while strengthening the bond
between them as they were shooting the
videos.

Talking about the success of the project, the
videos were published on the official youtube
channel and the official TikTok page of the
LEO UOC FOS club and got a significant
amount of views within a short period, every
time they were published. The Leos who
contributed to the production of the videos
were highly appreciated for their great effort
and for showing off their hidden talents to
society.

Coping with the death of our loved ones is
very difficult. Road accidents have been all
too regular in recent years. People are mostly
irresponsible and unaware of basic road
regulations and traffic rules. The project
aimed to raise awareness about road rules
and regulations and accident prevention
among the young generation. It was held at
Sri Saralankara Maha Vidyalaya, Welmilla,
Bandaragama, on 4th May 2022.

The project was honored by the participation
of Mr. Ariyarathne, the OIC of the Panadura
North police station, as the chief guest. Along
with the very informative session of the chief
guest, some games were organized to
improve the knowledge of the school
students about the road rules and
regulations. Over 250 students were
benefited and acquainted with the methods
of preventing road accidents, marking the
project as a huge success.

Little Wish 18

Giving a new meaning to the Sinhala and
Tamil New Year, we at the Leo Club of
University of Colombo, Faculty of Science,
organized a New Year celebration for a group
of children who have lost their parents' love
under the Little Wish project. We hoped that
this would make them feel that they are not
alone in society and that we will always be
there for them.

Wellawatte Lions Club joined hands with us
for this noble social cause, and we were able
to hold a successful New Year celebration
with a number of new year games for the
children of Vajira Children's Home in Pita
Kotte. The children enthusiastically
participated in new year games, and we did
not forget to appreciate their achievements
and abilities by giving prizes. Also, we used
this opportunity to appreciate the great
service rendered by the staff members of the
orphanage who treat children as their own
children. We believe that this day was an
unforgettable day for the children of the
orphanage and the staff members there. In
the end, we were able to do a worthwhile
project by making all efforts successful, and
this was applauded by all present.

DAYADA 19

Adults are armed with life experiences from a
number of characters on the life stage. They
have dedicated their energetic period to the
betterment of the family and the community.
We at the Leo Club of UOC FOS launched the
project Dayada with the aim of giving the
older generation the right place in society
who have made many such sacrifices.
This project was carried out in three phases,
and the first step was to conduct an
awareness program for children in
collaboration with Wevita Maithri Maha
Vidyalaya, Bandaragama. The children were
made aware of the importance of adult care,
and the distribution of leaflets made with
adult qualities was also done. The second
step was to create a video highlighting the
importance of adults, their abilities and
talents, and socializing them through social
media. The third step was to create a google
form to gather information to find out how
much society treats the adult community.
Finally, we believe that by doing this project,
we could be able to lay the foundation for
creating a society where adults can live safely
and freely in the future.

Life is challenging, and humans have made it
more complicated because life has fallen into
class and categories where the rich are
getting richer, and the poor are dying for
food. Life is a matter of privilege because
while some live a life of luxury, some fail even
to meet the ends of life.

Therefore the "Diriyata Saviyak'' as the
second phase of project Manusath Charika
organized by the Community Service of Leo
club of University of Colombo Faculty of
Science, was held in Madoluwawa Sobhitha

to uplift the rural economy. The seminar was
based on the unemployment community to

WHAT IF…? Was an informative project that
was focused on disaster management. In the
time of a disaster that occurs without prior
knowledge, it is important to have disaster
management measures to ensure an
effective and coordinated response to
disasters and provide prompt and
appropriate assistance to those affected.

The project has several components,
including an article series, a webinar, and
role-play simulation.
The article series covered the following
aspects concerning disaster management.

1.The most common natural disaster and
how they’re dealt with (by Leo Muditha
Ekanayake, A 1st Year)

2.Floods (by Leo Hasandi Dilara, A 1st year)
3.Coping with disasters efficiently (by Leo

Lasani Balasuriya, A 1st year)

A webinar on ‘Effective disaster management
and prevention’ was held on the 3rd of May,
2022, where Ms. Anoja Seneviratne from
Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka,
joined us to raise awareness. To wrap up the
project, a disaster response stimulation was

SUPOSHI 25

Nutrition is an absolutely important aspect of
life regardless of the age considered. But it is
critically important for women during
pregnancy. A well-balanced diet ensures the
health and development of the growing fetus
and the health of the mother. To avoid birth
defects and ensure the overall health of the
baby during birth, the mother’s nutrition
throughout pregnancy is critically important.
With the current economic context, it could
be hard to obtain the exact varieties of food
recommended by the nutritionist. In Project
‘Suposhi’, a session was held for a community
of pregnant mothers at PHI Office, Kesbewa,
on 4th May 2022. Here, mothers were
educated and informed on the alternate
nutrition sources that could cover the
nutritional needs during each period of the
pregnancy.

HARAWUMA 27

The number of drugs and alcohol addictors in
the present youth is crucial. The main
problem is that most of them either haven’t
heard about the benefits of rehabilitation,
are afraid of it, or think of it as ignominious.
The project's main aim was to convey to the
youth that rehabilitation is the best way to
put a stop to drug/alcohol addiction.
Since the young generation often uses digital
media, the message was delivered through a
short film called “Harawuma”. And the
specialty is that the film was scripted, cast,
and directed by our own Leos of LEO UOC
FOS. Hence the short film becomes a great
platform to show off the hidden talents of
our Leos while delivering a great message to
the whole youth in society. The short film was
published on the official youtube page of our
Leo club and received admirable responses
from many.
