Kara Nygren Adler says, Camp Serenbe “teaches kids how to make the most of nature.” The lessons come in the form of outdoor activities such as swimming and canoeing, trail hiking and horseback riding. Older campers take on the REI Adventure or Cooking & Farming Camps, while younger campers interact and feed residents of the Animal Village.
Enjoying nature has bene ts beyond fun in the sun (or shady woods).According to research from the Children & Nature Network, time in nature can improve children’s physical and mental health, and increased physical activity reduces symptoms of stress, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. “There’s a health bene t coming out of almost every [Serenbe] household,” Steve
noted in a recent Fast Company article.“Whether it’s the kids don’t have asthma and have less allergies, or people have gotten rid of their antidepressants...We’re even having [families] and retirees move here just because of the air quality.”

The Art Farm is a growing arts complex that provides a place to bring people together in support of the arts. The Art Farm plays host to multiple events and extensive programming throughout the year including Art Over Dinner, Grange
Hall Gallery pop-ups, art workshops and talks, because art in everyday life can build a greater understanding of the world.
Luckily, the founders of Serenbe believe the same thing.They began creating moments of art amongst the preserved woods of Serenbe before the community had even been realized, and the Serenbe Institute Public Art Committee has continued the tradition by
installing commissioned pieces.
Now, the Art Farm wants to help you nd all the creative moments that Serenbe has to

PETE DOMINICK TALKS TO THE TREES
Comedian & Radio Host Back For Second Summer
When Pete Dominick was young, he’d walk into the woods near his house in upstate New York, nd his special tree and talk to it.
“When I was a boy, I didn’t feel safe or secure in many ways,” Pete says.“I called it ‘my place,’ and it happened to be a tree. Eventually I brought a friend with me — just two boys who loved nature.We’d go and listen to the birds.And I still hear those same birds at 42.”
Today, Pete’s a stand-up comedian best known as the host of Stand Up! With Pete Dominick, a radio show on SiriusXM Insight121 that covers everything from politics and policy to climate change and conservation.
And in many ways, he’s still talking to trees.
“Nature is everything,”he says.“At one point in my life,I forgot it.I moved to the city and spent 12 years pursuing my career in comedy. I started a family, moved to the ‘burbs and rediscovered it.”
“Everything you need is in nature.The air we breathe, the water we drink.Young people aren’t learning it and adults are forgetting it, as we bury our faces in screens and worry about what our neighbors think about our Facebook posts.”
Pete was the keynote speaker at an annual conference for the Children & Nature Network (C&NN) and that’s where he met Steve Nygren and discovered Serenbe. C&NN was founded by Last Child in the Woods author Richard Louv; it’s his global non-pro t that puts children back in nature where they belong. As the Board Chair for C&NN, Steve Nygren was so impressed by Pete’s version of thought leadership during the keynote, he invited Pete, his wife and their two daughters to Serenbe last summer.
“It’s interesting to see your kids in any different atmosphere, but to see them at Serenbe, and for them to be exposed to the way people live there and the way it’s structured — it brought them a clear happiness they couldn’t articulate or describe,” Pete says. “It seemed they recognized that humans were meant to live more like this — in this type of community of people. Living in sync as much as we can with nature.”
The love went both ways, especially after Pete did a public comedy show at the Inn Pavilion and a private Changemaker Dinner that left everyone asking all year how soon he’d be back.
And nally there’s an answer. Pete Dominick returns to Serenbe August 15-20, bringing his family and his comedic perspective. In the works, another dinner, public talks and video surprises.

A LOT ON THEIR MIND
Why The Kiefer Family Made A Grange-to-Grange Move
Russ and Kara Kiefer met, got engaged and were married within seven months. “Russ believes in love at rst sight,”says Kara.“I believe in love at fourth or fth sight.”
One month before their wedding, in December of 2006, the Midtown condo dwellers drove out to have dinner at The Farmhouse.“I remember saying,‘This is so cute, but I could never live here because it’s so far from Atlanta,’” Kara says.
They returned the following February for a Sunday Supper and wound up spending the night at the Inn, just to see what it felt like to wake up at Serenbe.
“And that was the end of that,” Kara says.
The Kiefers bought a ve-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath cottage in Grange, Serenbe’s second hamlet, that was brand new when the moving van arrived in March of 2008.
“We closed on our home the same day that our neighbors, Ann and Tommy Jackson, closed, but we moved in a week before they did,” Kara says. “So we were all alone in the woods in Grange. Going from the noise of the city to the still and quiet of the country was honestly a little eerie. But we loved how at peace we felt when we were at Serenbe, almost like a weight was lifted off our shoulders.”
Over the next six years, they added two children, Jacey-Kate and Brooks, along with nishing out their terrace level with a media room and bar, additional full bath, bedroom and a home of ce space.They loved the house and had no plans to move ... until a friend told them about a very special lot opening up within Grange.
And that, as Kara says, was the end of that.
The lot is set within the woods on a slope overlooking the stables and the Kiefers wanted the house to look like an old barn with modern additions.The 5-room, four- and-a-half bath space was designed with the idea that the family would use all of the rooms on the upper two oors daily.“It’s really turned out that way,” Kara says.“We used a Murphy bed in our guest room/playroom so that the guest room gets used, even when we don’t have guests.”
Special details include solid wood beams and brick from a local mill constructed in the 1800s, a wall of steel windows and doors, a basement bar with multiple screens for gameday viewing and a master bath with a tub and double shower with 6 jets.“Our builders called it, ‘the car wash,’” Kara says.
Outside, their 900-square foot back patio has a built-in re pit and pool.And when they say the views are “pastoral,” they mean it.
“The view of the pasture and stables is spectacular and completely changes with the seasons,” she says.“The horses come right up to the fence and visit us, which is fun. It’s also one of the most private lots in the neighborhood, which we have really enjoyed. It’s so close to everything — the trampoline, General Store, etc. — but when the leaves are on the trees, we feel secluded.”

The Latest Trend Supports Physical And Emotional Health
Yoga. For some the word brings a calming inner peace. For others, it brings anxiety as they imagine the impossible poses yogis perform on their Insta- gram feeds.
Heather Ayers is not a fan of the latter.“Social media has crazy poses and it turns regular people off from the practice,” she says. “Yoga is for the people, it needs to feel warm and open to everyone.”
She wants to change the way yoga is portrayed, and she’s starting with Serenbe Yoga. “Yoga isn’t about exibility or the physical, it’s more about the mental. [At Serenbe Yoga,] We’ll pull physical yen elements and mental meditation elements into the practice. It’s a great way for beginners to get into meditation.”

“People look at me like I’m crazy and say, ‘What the heck is Goat Yoga?!’” says Heather, who learned about the trendby“beingintheyogaworld.”ShereturnedtoSerenbe from teacher training and when it came up in conversation, she thought “of all places, why does Serenbe NOT have Goat Yoga?”
“[GoatYoga] is about tying emotional support animals with yoga. Goats are sweeter and more social than dogs and are known as the top emotional support animals. After the yoga portion is complete you socialize with the goats, which is what people are drawn to.” says Heather.
The ve Nigerian Dwarf Goats; Prana, Asana, Mula, Bhanda and Bali; moved to their new home at the Inn at Serenbe Animal Village in April 2018, and Goat Yoga sessions take place in their environment.
“There are a lot of rules with Goat Yoga, because we’re intheirelementnotours,”saysHeather.“Thegoatsinteract with you while you do yoga.They’re jumping on your back
and curling in your lap, but there’s more to it. You can’t wear jewelry or hair down because they’ll eat it.They may have to use the restroom during class...on your mat.This is the experience.You just have to laugh, relax and not hold yourself back and miss part of it because you’re worried about something.”

Day pop-up tour at our Earth Day events.
Last year for Earth Day, Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day brought a team to plant herb gardens
throughout the community and help re-launch our composting initiative.
This year, the maker of aromatherapeutic household cleaners hit the road for their Rooted in Goodness Spring Tour and stopped through Serenbe to clean a few homes as “Random Acts of Cleanliness,” check on last year’s gardens, promote their Green Thumb

The Earth Day Festivities culminated with an Earth Day Birthday Party for mutual good friend, Danny Seo.The Emmy-winning namesake of the NBC show Naturally, Danny Seo has championed our planet and its natural biodiversity from a very young age, tting for someone born on Earth Day.
Danny fell for Serenbe the rst time he visited and now Serenbe looks forward to continuing the relationship by building the rst Naturally, Danny Seo House.The house is one of the few remaining Mado homes with expansive and direct views to the woods, will feature sustainable aspects including geothermal heating and cooling and will be Earthcraft certi ed. It Isn’tWhatYouThink
It isn’t the wild ower meadow. It’s not the pasture, farm or even down by the lake.The most photographed spot at Serenbe is the wastewater treatment plant.
That’s right, at least a few times a week, a photographer and a bride or family head halfway down the elevated wooden walkway — with trees and tall grass all around — then stop, smile and shoot.
What’s just out of frame is a cutting-edge decentralized wastewater collection, treatment and reuse system that stays true to Serenbe’s water conservation and stewardship beliefs. It’s a big reason why their water consumption is 25 percent lower than the national average.
Designed by Biohabits, a conservation planning and ecological restoration rm in Maryland, the system has four components: “The plant is comprised of man-made
constructed wetlands — primarily cattails and bulrush — ltration basins and circulating pumps,” writes Megan Kimble at non-pro le online magazine Terrain.org. “Collection tanks collect household wastewater, retain the solids for decomposition and pass on the liquids to the plant for natural treatment. Once treated, some of the water is pumped to a nearby cow pasture and released into the ground through piped sub-surface drip lines.The remaining greywater is pumped throughout the community for use in sub-surface drip irrigation.
Translation: This is not your everyday industrial eyesore.
That’s hard for some people to wrap their minds around — especially those who make and enforce wastewater treatment laws.
“When the plan was nished, I was told I had to put
a chain-link fence around the treatment plan,” says Serenbe Founder Steve Nygren. “I told the agency, there’s nothing toxic about it. Nothing to fall into. ‘No no,’ they told me. ‘You’ve got to put one up.’”
Instead, Steve tapped Reed-Hilderbrand, a renowned landscape architecture rm in the Boston area.“I needed it to be beautiful to make a point to the world and it worked,” Steve says.“Our beautiful little wastewater treatment plant has become a model for water conservation and design.”

One of Serenbe’s approved architects and a member of the AIA, J.P.’s rst Serenbe project was the low country Grange Lake Estate, featured as the Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles 2015 Designer Showhouse.“Everything grew from that,” says J.P.
J.P. started Curran and Company Architects in 2014 after 10 years with Atlanta’s Historical Concepts, and after the Grange Lake Estate was completed, he quickly moved on to designing two residences in Swann Ridge that t right into an English village, along with nine jewel box European cottages and the Serenbe Swim Club in Mado. He also designed the Mathis Home, recently featured in Wall Street Journal,“Luxury HomesThat Promise to Reduce Stress”.
J.P.’s classical training and broad exposure to Southern architecture were a natural t for Serenbe, especially now as he starts his latest project – designing a row of custom estate homes, which will sit at the top of the Grange neighborhood.The three Grange homes are each drawn from one vernacular – choose a shingled lake house, a modern stone estate home, or a luxurious
modern saltbox with high glass walls to take in the expansive treetop views.
The rst to come out of the ground will be a traditional dark shingled home with white
shutters, which brings to mind the lake houses of Michigan and Puget Sound.
“We’re developing estate homes at Serenbe with a custom client in mind,” says J.P. “My approach is generally the same on every project; I draw on inspiration from the client, in this
case Steve and Garnie Nygren, and then consider the site and its immediate surroundings.” J.P. also likes to work in “built-ins,” like window seats or bookshelves, or he gets creative
with the front door as a way to make the homes have a more custom feel.
“The smaller places, things you can touch. Those are where you have the opportunity to make a home feel special,” says J.P. “Especially at Serenbe, there are opportunities to be creative in design. Serenbe’s Montessori School Evolves, Now Includes Acton Academy
Learn to be. Learn to do. Learn to learn. This is the philosophy behind Acton Academy, the school taking the place ofThe Children’s House at Serenbe this fall.
It’ll be a place where students are “young learners.” Where teachers are “guides.”Where the mission is to “inspire each child and parent who enters our doors to nd a calling that will change the world.”
The Children’s House at Serenbe has served the
community well since it began in 2009. It started in a
resident’s basement and has grown into a safe, supportive and inspiring environment for Serenbe’s youngest generation and nearby children.
The primary Montessori curriculum will remain for children ages 3 to 6.The transition to Acton Academy will bene t children ages 7 to 11, traditionally grades 1 - 4.There will be two separate classrooms, also called communities, and they’ll remain under one roof.
According to Board Chair and Serenbe resident John Mattis, whose son will attend in the fall, Acton Academy doesn’t rely on the hierarchy of teacher and student.
“The guides remain in Socratic mode all the time,” John says. “They don’t provide answers to the questions, but provide questions that lead students to discover answers on their own.That way, the children learn to learn, which parlays into learning to do.
“Instead of being spoon-fed information and digesting it, we’ll train them to look to themselves to discover and learn how to learn.This creates self-reliance and grit — the ability to see when something needs to be done and knowing how to do it yourself without relying on others.”
And if they fail, that’s just ne.
“It’s a safe environment to fail early, fail often and view failure as an opportunity to learn, not an opportunity to quit,” John says. “Wouldn’t it be nice if failing didn’t mean failure?”
At the beginning of the school year, each child comes in with their parent to set goals and objectives for the year. “As a parent, you have to believe your child has the ability to change the world and empower them to pursue paths of interest,” says Malin Roghelia, board member and current head of school. “That’s the only way true learning can occur.”
As they work through goals, their performance and accomplishments are tracked. “The core skills like reading, writing and arithmetic are all covered in daily curriculum,”John says.“Each young learner
must achieve mastery before they can move on. At Acton, they have the ability to move at their own pace, whether that’s fast or slow.”
“The guide is there to support them and provide the framework so each young learner canmoveforward,”Malinsays.“Thechildsetstheirownpathandisaccountabletogodown that path.The peer structure in the classroom — plus the goals they set with their parents — help them to get there.
Young learners at Acton Academy take on “quests,” or hands-on projects that span six weeks, to master problem solving skills in the modern world. This is where Serenbe’s countless assets reveal themselves to kids in new ways.
“If they have a science quest involving food, they can go to the farm and talk to farmers. They can plant a vegetable as a seed, go back to water and harvest it, set up a booth at the Farmers Market and sell it.That way they can understand where food comes from and the business and economics involved in selling a real life product,” Malin says. “It’s where they live and part of their education.”

1⁄2 Cup Coffee Grounds 1 Pinch Salt
In a mixing bowl, add the egg yolks and sugar and mix until thick and glossy. Set aside. In a heavy saucepan add milk, cream and coffee grounds. Bring to a boil, then temper into yolks and sugar. Return to stove and cook until the mixture covers the back of the spoon. Add salt, strain and let cool. Churn in an ice cream maker, then serve.

Creating a Food Forest in Mado
There’s no shortage of places to get local food at Serenbe.You can get mixed greens with citrus vin- aigrette at The Farmhouse, a BLT on sourdough
from the Blue Eyed Daisy and seasonal fruits and vegetables at the Farmers’ Market and Serenbe Farms.
But if you live in Mado, you can just snag a few persimmons from the food forest.
Themed around health and wellness, Serenbe’s third hamlet has its own medicinal and edible garden and this food forest is the rst one to be built among a growing trend to get closer to nature.
“Not an orchard, not a community garden, but something with a natural aesthetic,” says landscape architect and University of Georgia professor Al e Vick. “The difference between the food forest at Serenbe and the natural environment outside of it is that everything in the food forest is either medicinal or edible.”
Vick’s expertise is in native plants and Cherokee ethno- botany, or the cultural use and signi cance of plants and how they’re used as medicine by indigenous cultures.Three years ago, Serenbe Founder Steve Nygren asked Vick to design the courtyards and greenspaces that run through
Anders Walk, an enclave of Mado, and he wanted to include a plan for a central town garden.
I came up with an idea to make it a food forest and showcase the greenspace of the area, but I had an ulterior motive as well,” Vick says. “Everything planted there is native to the Southeast. And as residents notice the cycles and build con dence in knowing what time of year plants bloom, and what the fruits look like, I hope they’ll start to notice those same plants along the trails when they take a walk in the woods. I want the food forest to build awareness and con dence in all the edible resources available in the world around us.”
Planting took place in the Fall of 2017, so what’s there now isn’t mature enough to bear fruit just yet. But soon enough, residents will be able to enjoy berry-producing trees like mulberry and serviceberry, “a native tree with white owers and almost blueberry-looking fruits that are delicious,” says Vick.
Edible landscaping isn’t new to Serenbe — where kids love eating blueberries right off the bush at crosswalks in Grange — but Mado’s food forest takes things to the next level.Vick included oak and hickory trees, which he says are
edible with the right preparation. He also included Ginseng, St. John’s Wort and Angelica among other herbs and shrubs. Each of these plants are popular herbal remedies and can restore and enhance wellbeing from boosting energy, to reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
“Now that the food forest is growing and lling in, I’m working on a eld guide for residents, so they can connect photos of plants with what they see in the garden, so they know what’s edible,”Vick says.“In the future, I’ll be working with Serenbe’s environmental committee to organize workshops where we can talk about things like harvesting acorns to make acorn our.”
The possibilities are limitless in one of the rst food forests in the Southeast.
“It’s a marriage between the interest in urban agriculture/community gardens, combined with an interest in biophilia, or the desire to reconnect or have contact with nature,” Vick says. “Food forests bring those two things together and create public greenspaces that allow people to forage in a safe, controlled way.”
