JOSHUA HELLER
SENIOR RABBI
The story is told of a rabbi who hushed his child during services, and asked, “and do you know why you have to be quiet during services?” The child responded “yes, because people are sleeping!”
At B’nai Torah, people sleep primarily during the sermon, but I often wrestle with the question of how to make our services more meaningful and inspirational for all who attend. It has hard to find a balance that will engage those who draw inspiration and comfort from the traditional liturgy, while also providing meaning for those who have trouble accessing the time honored words and melodies.
At the same time, we have different needs. Some are seeking what I might call ruach — a high energy experience, feeling swept up in a crowd. For others, spirituality is more contemplative, reflecting a sense of tranquility and individual connection with God.
Our sages understood these divergent needs. That is one of the reasons why we repeat the Amidah (the standing prayer), first silently and then aloud. We have a chance to have an internalized, “go at your own pace experience”, followed by the opportunity to join in joyful community.
We are doing more this year to meet these diverse needs. On the weekend of August 26-28, we are welcoming Joey Weisenberg, for a “Singing Communities” shabbaton — we’ll learn how to bring our voices together to make God’s music more energetic and inspiring in our main service. With Rabbi Konigsburg’s help, we will also be offering a fuller schedule of alternative services, including family, learners and other small group prayer experiences, even “minYoga” for those needing a change of pace.
Authentic Jewish prayer can be relaxing or invigorating, loud or introspective. It doesn’t have to put you to sleep — unless, of course, a Shabbat nap before Kiddush is what you came for in the first place.

“ Sometimes the best way to lead is by making room for others and doing what needs to get done.”
“I de nitely bring
my enthusiasm for Jewish Education,
my vision of holistic religious observance, and my sincere belief in the bene ts of re ective practice.”
HILLEL KONIGSBURG
ASSOCIATE RABBI
I was once part of a group interview for a student leadership position I was applying for. The interviewers set up activities that required collective reasoning, delegation, and other communication skills, and each applicant vied to make an impression on the interviewers. Needless to say, it was very awkward for all the applicants who were trying to outshine the other candidates — who were also their friends — and put their best foot forward. Recognizing the amount of talent and leadership in the room, I remember making the decision to let others speak and do my best to follow their lead. At the end of the exercise, we were asked to share our thoughts. I shared my belief that sometimes the best way to lead is by making room for others and doing what needs to get done.
Whether I got the job because of that exercise or because of some other aspect of my application I can never know. Yet, I believe there was something to this strategy. The rabbis teach that it is better to be the tail of a lion, than the head of a fox (Mishna Avot 4:20); it is better to desire being part of something very great, than it is to desire being the leader of something mediocre.
Of course the Rabbis of a community are looked to as leaders and are looked to for guidance and direction. I definitely bring my enthusiasm for Jewish Education, my vision of holistic religious observance, and my sincere belief in the benefits of reflective practice. But sometimes the best way to lead is to follow the example of others. I am fortunate to be joining a community that is full of leadership and experience. My aspiration for my new rabbinic career is to be able to learn from the experience of others, from both the professional and lay leaders of this community. There is a lot of passion and energy at Congregation B’nai Torah, and my goal is to nourish that passion and help it reach its greatest potential. Each and every member of our community has a vision and idea of how our community can strive, and I look forward to hearing your ideas and doing my part to maintain and expand Congregation B’nai Torah’s excellence.

NATALIE SARNAT
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
We completed our ve-year Strategic Plan a few months ago, and many compelling ideas developed from the process.
Along with new programming, additional staff, a full day preschool, increased congregant engagement, and adding more ruach in our services, came the realization that it was a perfect time to ensure our logo was in sync with who we are and where we are going. As our building, congregation, and programming evolve, so will our branding... our visual identity, how we communicate, and building a greater connection to our community.
Our new Congregation B’nai Torah logo is being launched on August 1st. Our logo reflects who we are and what makes us unique. It’s contemporary, warm, timeless, and reflects our synagogue in a unique and sophisticated way. The new Congregation B’nai Torah logo mirrors all of the facets of our congregation and community. Most importantly, it can only be our logo because it emanates from our beautiful Torah ark in the sanctuary.
I am very excited to share the new Congregation B’nai Torah logo with our congregants and community. It is the culmination of many months of work. It embodies our institution, past and present, and what we strive to be. We are proud to announce the launch of our new logo as part of the ongoing evolution of Congregation B’nai Torah.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Alan Smirin, and I was elected by the synagogue to be your new President.
I want to thank you for the honor and privilege to serve Congregation B’nai Torah and our community.
I’m very excited as I look forward to working with the dynamic new board and slate of officers that you have elected. The enthusiam and support I’ve been welcomed with has been beautiful.
I want to meet all of you, especially the people I don’t know and talk about our vibrant congregation. Please introduce yourself when you come to services, meetings or events.
With the high holidays approaching us, I encourage us all to observe them in a spirit of optimism and most importantly, Jewish unity. Of course we want G-d to accept our repentance and inscribe us in the book of life. It is a new year on the Hebrew calender. Embrace this spiritual period of time for reflection and self improvement in all areas of our lives.
As an active Congregant for 10 years, there is no better place to start your journey then B’nai Torah. Come to Shabbat and all holiday services, come to learn, come to our minyans, come to socialize, come participate in our community events. Just come! You will see and experience the rewards. I do! The way many of us use our gym dues, use your synagoue dues!
I’ll close with a nugget from Rabbi Ben Tzion Sha er, aka “The Shmuz” about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. “When you stand before G-d davening the mussaf service ask yourself are you a better Jew this year then last... make this a continuous goal”.
I have been practicing it for several years. It works! Enjoy your holidays and have a sweet new year.

Womens’s League for Conservative Judaism
CAROL SIMON
INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
Four years ago, Southern Region, was preparing to hold their yearly region conference here at B’nai Torah. As part of the conference several of us had planned to spend Shabbat together prior to the meeting. As we walked into services Shabbat morning, I felt at home immediately! We were warmly welcomed by both Rabbi Heller and Rabbi Kenter.
Yet, what made me feel so welcomed was because of my involvement in WLCJ, I knew both of their mothers! I met Rabbi Heller’s mother at the very start of my journey, when she had come to Florida Region as our consultant. Rabbi Kenter’s mother and I have served on the WLCJ exec for years and we continue to do so even today. I watched and learned from Rabbi Kenter throughout his time at JTS.
This connection is only possible because of the women of WLCJ. This connection that starts in our local sisterhoods and then grows provides every conservative Jewish woman the opportunity to have their voice heard. Together we strive to educate all women, both Jewishly and spiritually. Together we provide a venue to network, share our challenges and successes and to find the resources to enhance our lives at home and within our synagogue communities.
At times I am asked what is the value of having gender specific organizations within our synagogues, especially since most are egalitarian. To me the answer is simple-we need a variety of doors or portals into our synagogues to provide for everyone. Our sisterhood’s provide a warm place to grow, try new things and to realize the importance of programming just for women. Our Women’s League Shabbat offers our members the opportunity to learn something new, stretch and go out of their comfort zone, whether it is having an Aliyah, reading Torah or simply opening the ark, all for the first time. Though these women can do it all year long, it is only for this special Shabbat that they are asked to do something for the first time!
WLCJ is the voice of Conservative Jewish women worldwide..and we advocate for change, for recognition and for the perpetuation of the Jewish people. Our why is simple, we are all about educating women Jewishly and have been doing just that since 1918.

Pilot Year of Historic Jewish Atlanta Tours a Success for the Breman Museum
AARON BERGER
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In 2014, the Breman Museum launched a free App, Historic Jewish Atlanta, for smartphones and tablets that puts Historic Jewish Atlanta at your ngertips.
In 2014, the Breman Museum launched a free app, Historic Jewish Atlanta, for smartphones and tablets that puts Historic Jewish Atlanta at your fingertips. The app consists of 13 sites around Atlanta that tell the story of Atlanta’s history from a Jewish perspective. “This is the only app out there that tells the Jewish history of a city,” says the Breman’s executive director Aaron Berger. “To complement the app, we began offering tours of sites highlighted on the app.”
In 2015, the Breman started with guided tours of two historic synagogues: The Temple and Congregation Ahavath Achim. “The attendance was surprisingly diverse,” says the Breman’s Community Engagement Manager Ghila Sanders. “Non-Jews came to learn about Jewish traditions while lifelong Atlantans came to explore historic buildings they had heard about but never visited.”
Each tour, which lasts approximately 2 hours, is led by an expert from that site. For example the tour of Leo Frank’s Grant Park was led by Alisa Chambers of the Atlanta Preservation Center and allowed visitors to walk the streets of Grant Park and learn about this area and how it was once one of the most diverse and eclectic neighborhoods in Atlanta. The guided tours of the Historic Oakland Cemetery sold out months in advance and featured an in-depth discussion of the Jewish grounds and the symbolism found throughout Atlanta’s oldest cemetery. Each tour is free to Breman Members with a nominal charge to nonmembers, however due to a grant from the Georgia Humanities Council, the Breman offered two Civil Rights tours that included trolley rides to key points in Atlanta’s civil rights movement and explored the role Jews played in advancing — and sometimes hindering the advancement of civil rights in Atlanta. “We have been overwhelmed by the response with many of the tours selling out weeks in advance,” says Sanders. “The size of the tour is limited to just 30 people, so everyone can easily hear the docent and get the most out of the tour.”
“I learned a lot from the tours and I have lived in Atlanta my whole life!” Said one attendee.
The 2016-2017 season is being organized now and will expand to new sites. Visit www.thebreman.org for a complete listing.

“How in the world did I become Sisterhood President?
Oy gavalt;
I’m still asking myself that. Until a few short years ago, I felt like the odd mom out.”
Odd Mom Out
DEBY BARBER
SISTERHOOD CO-PRESIDENT
I didn’t know very many people at the synagogue, my kids didn’t go to Jewish day school, my husband wasn’t Jewish; I wasn’t really sure where I fit in, but I knew I felt comfortable here at B’nai Torah. I had to find a way to connect. Well how exactly does one find her way in this large and growing congregation? Actually, it wasn’t as challenging as I thought.
It all started through an acquaintance, a real mensch; enter “my friend Michele”, whom I’d known casually from going to Saturday morning services. She was congenial and seemed to know many people. My daughters and I attended a couple times a month and I knew the few congregants who sat in the same seats near us. Yet I really wanted to get to know more of the women in order to feel more connected and make coming to services, in addition to spiritual, social and fun as well. I asked my friend how she knew so many people; she simply replied “Sisterhood”. I told her I would love to get involved somehow. She invited me to a sit at her table at the upcoming Donor event, but I still felt out of place and didn’t make the time to go.
Well, not long after, I got a call from my friend. She told me she was putting together the Sisterhood board for the coming year and she would love to have me get involved. We talked for a bit and she suggested I would be a great chair for Donor. I said, “I’ve never even attended Donor.” She told me Donor was the annual Sisterhood fundraiser, we all get farpitzs, schmooze, kibitz, nosh — a real Girls’ Night Out. She said it would be “EASY!” (Famous 4-letter word) “There’s a formula and lists,” and she said “I know you would be great at it!” I hadn’t even planned a bat mitzvah; I mean I can make my Nana’s matzo ball soup for the mishpocha, but this was Big! Her enthusiasm was contagious and she believed I could do it. She said it’s a great way to get to know ALL the women in the synagogue. Well, I must have been ferdrayt that day because I said, “What the heck — I’ll do it.”
B’nai Today Newsletter I Aug/Sep/Oct 2016

What she forgot to mention, is that it’s usually co-chaired by two volunteers; I had agreed to do it on my own. Shlemiel — What in the world was I thinking? Ignorance is bliss. Let me assure you though, I did not do it alone. There were so many other women who helped, from the superwomen in the office, to the women who donated their time to stuff invitation envelopes, volunteer the services of their businesses to make the evening memorable, donated or helped collect items for the auctions, hosted tables and made sure the event was well attended. Some how, the evening turned out to be a success! Ok, I’m kvelling.
Mission Accomplished! I became quite friendly with most everyone in the synagogue office, met so many of our amazing members, made so many friends and I felt like I had accomplished something really worthwhile. I no longer felt like the Odd Mom Out. I knew I had a place here, that my talents and skills could be useful and that I had at least as much to give B’nai Torah as I felt it had given me.
The shabbat following Donor, my friend said to me, “you know it’s a two year position??” After a good laugh (did I say she was a mensch?) I realized she was serious, but by that time I was hooked. I’d had a great time at Donor and even though getting it all together was a production, I had a lot of help and made so many friends.
So fast forward a few years, and again, someone asked, “Would you consider being the Sisterhood Co-President with me?” I deliberated it for a few days and conceded I really had no reason not too. I love B’nai Torah, I love Sisterhood, and this time, I knew I could do it.
I have discovered amazing friends in Sisterhood. I felt a stronger connection to the synagogue because I found my place, far beyond a Saturday morning seat. I learned how to be a leader, how to be an event planner, I even learned how to play mah jongg. I recognized what made up our diverse group of Sisterhood membership. Mostly I realized how the incredible network of Jewish women in our community Get Things Done!
So the next time you see an event that interests you, Go! Don’t want to go alone? Call a friend and bring her. The next time some one asks you to come to an event you’ve never attended, venture out, meet some new people and catch up with old friends. The next time you’re asked to volunteer, make the time to give back. The next time your asked to serve in a position, consider sharing your talents. Be a part of us. And together let us find new ways to enrich our Jewish experience.
“I have discovered amazing friends in Sisterhood.”

“We are working to create opportunities to nurture this connection and ensure our younger congregants develop the same passion towards Israel that we have.”
The Israel Awareness Committee
TAL NUDELMAN
ISRAEL AWARENESS CHAIR
The Israel Awareness Committee set out to foster a stronger connection between our congregation and Israel through awareness, activism, and cultural engagement. This past year was our first, and we enjoyed some great successes, so thank you congregants! Your attendance and support raised awareness and activism within our synagogue. Our delegation to the AIPAC Policy Conference grew by almost 50% and was the 3rd largest from Atlanta. The Israeli wine tasting event introduced people to delicious new wines, which they now buy and help support the Israeli economy. Our involvement in pro-Israel events around the Atlanta community is branding our congregation as passionate Israel advocates. Let’s keep it going!
“Our delegation to the AIPAC Policy Conference grew by almost 50% and was the 3rd largest from Atlanta.”
At an event this past year Deputy Consulate General of Israel in Atlanta, Ron Brummer, noted that one of the most critical long term issues facing Israel is the danger of a weakening connection between young American Jews and Israel. We are working to create opportunities to nurture this connection and ensure our younger congregants develop the same passion towards Israel that we have. One such program is called Kesher and connects our children with children in Israel for fun cultural learning.
This coming year we will continue to bring interesting speakers and partner with pro-Israel organizations to offer opportunities for involvement. We are also focusing on cultural engagement through fun programs such as Israeli cooking classes and another wine tasting event. If you have ideas for programs or would like to hear more about specific topics we want to hear about it. And if you are interested in getting more involved and serving on the committee we are excited to have you. Thank you for a wonderful year and we look forward to another one!

Congregation B’nai Torah Preschool
HILARY MILLER
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION DIRECTOR
As Jewish early childhood directors everywhere begin their planning each year, the big question is always posed, “how would you add a Jewish component to your classroom theme?”
At the time of this writing, I have had the opportunity to observe the end-of-school-year festivities at Congregation B’nai Torah Preschool, including the Pre-K Siyum (celebration), Monday morning Havdalah, and the Friday afternoon Shabbat Sing. I even had the honor of hosting a Friday evening Tot Shabbat.
I had two experiences during my first weeks with B’nai Torah that confirmed I had landed in a place where Jewish education is priority. In one instance, I overheard a little boy in the hallway breaking out into a spontaneous rendition of “Torah Tziva Lanu Moshe.” In another instance, during Tot Shabbat when candles were lit and prayers were sung, a little girl kept asking her mom where the challah was. Although this particular evening, challah wasn’t planned in the itinerary, she knew that challah should have been the next part
of the ritual and was confused why this wasn’t happening. I was certainly learning from this little girl that although we may have missed the boat in not providing the actual experience of the challah, she knew about it from being a product of the B’nai Torah Jewish experience.
In my first weeks, as I stayed in the office late trying to wrap my head around the new responsibilities ahead of me, I could hear a Bar Mitzvah boy practicing his Torah portion over the speaker and again I am reminded why I do what I do. I smile and my heart is warmed. Jewish early childhood education is what I am passionate about. It is the foundation, the roots from which everything else grows. Without a good solid footing, everything crumbles.
“I understand the child’s need to have sensory experiences, to have a sense of safety, to be nurtured and feel confident...”

“ I rst became hooked into the
early childhood arena of Jewish education through volunteering in my daughter’s classroom during her preschool years, and then I never left.”
Growing up in Baltimore and attending an all-girl, observant Jewish private day school gave me my foundation. Years later, married and with a young daughter, my husband and I were looking for a preschool here in Atlanta. It wasn’t even a question that it would be a Jewish preschool. I first became hooked into the early childhood arena of Jewish education through volunteering in my daughter’s classroom during her preschool years, and then I never left. I pursued my own educational degrees while applying my experience right in the field. My professional background includes Jewish preschools, full time secular preschools, Jewish day school, camp, and after-school programs, giving me the tools I need to help grow with B’nai Torah.
Being in the field for 21 years, I understand the child’s need to have sensory experiences, to have a sense of safety, to be nurtured and feel confident in their environment so that they can take risks, to learn from those risks, and to try again. I bring a vision to the preschool that allows children to explore materials and environments that are intentional, co-construct their learning side-by-side with their peers using the guidance of their teachers, for whom observation, documentation, and dialogue are also intentional. Because careful observation and documentation are so important, all the required learning domains that ensure each child is prepared academically are easily monitored as a result. Jewish values are always at the root, guiding us through the calendar, holidays, rituals, blessings, morals, and values.
In the short time I have been part of the preschool, I have experienced such a warm welcome. B’nai Torah takes the value of “Hachnasat Orchim” (practice of hospitality) very seriously. I am so excited to have joined such a wonderful family. Please stop by the early childhood office and say “Shalom!”
