Av Harachamim
May the All-merciful Father, who dwells in the supernal heights, in His profound compassion, remember with mercy the pious, the upright and the perfect ones, the holy communities who gave their lives for the sancti- fication of the Divine Name. They were beloved and pleasant in their lives, and [even] in their death were not parted [from Him]; they were swifter than eagles, stronger than lions to carry out the will of their Maker and the desire of their Creator.
May our God remember them with favor together with the other righteous of the world, and avenge the spilled blood of His servants; as it is written in the Torah of Moses, the man of God: O nations, sing the praises of His people, for He will avenge the blood of His servants, bring retribution upon his foes, and placate His land, His people. And by Your servants, the prophets, it is written as follows: I will cleanse [the nations of their wrongdoings,] but for the shedding of [Jewish] blood I will not cleanse them; the Lord dwells in Zion.(1) And in the Holy Writings it is said: Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”(2) Let there be known among the nations, before our eyes, the retribution of the spilled blood of Your servants.
And it is said: for the Avenger of bloodshed is mindful of them; He does not forget the cry of the downtrodden.(3) Further it is said: He will render judgment upon the nations and they will be filled with corpses; He will crush heads over a vast area. He will drink from the stream on the way; therefore [Israel] will hold its head high.(4)

FATHER OF MERCY!
In Your hands are the souls of the living and the dead. May You soothe our hearts as we remember on this holy day our revered and beloved family members who have gone to their eternal rest, and we think of our dear parents, the crown of our heads and our glory, who wanted to train us in the way of virtue and righteousness, to teach us Your statutes and precepts, to do justice and love mercy. O Lord! Grant us strength to remain faithful to their teachings while we still breathe. May their souls be comforted in the land of life, witnessing Your glory and delighting in the reward.
O good and generous God! What shall we say to You? Our needs are so many, we can’t declare them all. We are filled with shame as we think of all the goodness that You have given us. Show mercy and loving-kindness to the cry of Your children who pour out their souls before You. May Your loving-kindness never leave us. Give us our daily sustenance, and let us not be in need of the gifts of flesh and blood. Remove from us care and sorrow, distress and fear, shame and contempt. Strengthen us in reverence for You, and fortify us to keep Your perfect Laws. Grant us the joy of training our sons and daughters to keep Your commandments and to perform Your will all the days of our lives. Let us complete the number of our years in peace. We know that our life is frail, and that our days are as a hand-breadth. Help us, O God of our salvation, to live before You in truth and honor during the years of our journey.
When You take us from this earth, be with us. May our souls be bound up in the bond of life with the souls of our parents and of the righteous who stand before You in Heaven.
Amen. Amen.

LORD, what is man that You see and know him?
Or the son of man that You take account of him?
Man is like to vanity, his days are but a passing shadow.
In the morning he opens and blossoms, and in the evening he closes and protects.
Watch our days so that we may grow in wisdom.
Watch the innocent man and protect the upright, so that he may be granted peace.
But God will redeem my soul from the grave and He will receive me, Selah.
My flesh and heart will fail, but God is my strength and my portion forever.
And as the dust returns to the earth as it was, so my spirit returns to God, who gave it.

E-L MALEI RACHAMIM
Prayer for the Martyrs of the Holocaust, The Martyrs of the Israel Defense Forces, and The Other Martyrs of the Jewish People
O God, Full of Compassion, who dwells on high, grant true rest upon the wings of the Shechinah (Divine Presence), in the exalted spheres of the holy and pure, who shine as the resplendence of the firmament to the souls of the Martyrs of Israel, and to the souls of the Martyrs of the Holocaust, slaughtered by the enemies of the Jewish people (may their names be obliterated), and for the souls of the members of the Israel Defense Forces, who gave their lives in the sanctification of Your name, for charity has been donated in remembrance of their souls.
May their place of rest be in Gan Ayden. Therefore, may the Almighty One shelter them with the cover of His wings, bind their souls in the bond of life, the Lord is their heritage; may they rest in their resting place in peace.
And let us say, Amen.

Yizkor - Remember
The more accurate translation of “Yizkor” is to mention or remind. The difference is subtle yet profound.
Remembering can be passive and effortless. However, to mention or remind suggests activity and engagement.
“Yizkor” urges us to treat this special prayer as more than a trip down memory lane. It is a call to action. (This is one of the reasons for the custom to pledge Tz’dakah at this time).
The passing of a close relative or friend can be a debilitat- ing and numbing experience. We, mere mortals, are not qualified or equipped to make sense of death. We are how- ever, empowered to keep a departed loved one as an inti- mate and influential part of our lives.
By continuously reminding ourselves and mentioning to our family and friends the significance of our loved ones’ lives, we build the foundation for their legacy.
This is true Yizkor.
