barrymore film center
The Friends of the Barrymore Film Center (aka Friends of Fort Lee Film,
Inc.) is a 501c3 nonprofit established by the Borough of Fort Lee to raise
funds for the programs and exhibits of the Barymore Film Center (BFC).
The 260-seat cinema and film museum is dedicated to the role Fort Lee,
NJ played as birthplace of the American film industry and as the first
American film town where such studios as Universal (1912) Fox (1915) and
the first studio built and operated by a woman, Alice Guy Blache’ (Solax
1912) were established. The BFC was built by the Borough of Fort Lee and
is operated by the Friends of the Barrymore Film Center. The Center will
be the location of major film retrospectives, special industry guests and
performances, educational workshops, silent film programs, film festivals,
screenings of foreign films and works of emerging filmmakers as well
as exhibits centering not only on Fort Lee film history but world cinema
history.
Their mission is to raise funds from donors to facilitate multicultrual film
and educational programs, exhibits and youth filmmaking projects that
reflect the diversity of Fort Lee and the region; to make those in the world
cinema community aware of Fort Lee’s role as a pioneer film town; and to
attract business to the Main Street area via programs and film screenigs
at the BFC. The BFC will serve as an economic engine for the Main Street
area and benefit the restaurant and business community. The BFC will
establish strategic partnerships with internationally recognized film centers
from around the world.

FORT LEE MUSEUM
Fort Lee’s rich and varied history has had a home since 1999 in the Fort
Lee Museum, the first museum dedicated solely to the history of the Borough
of Fort Lee. The Fort Lee Historical Society occupies the building using it as a
facility to archive material and display historic and rare artifacts.
General George Washington ordered the building of fortifications in Fort
Lee in the summer of 1776. Fort Lee and Fort Washington across the river were
established to prevent British control of the Hudson River. General Washington
named the Fort after General Charles Lee, who fought in the battle at New
York City. General Washington designated the area as an encampment for his
troops during the fall of 1776. The area is known as Monument Park and is also
the location of the Fort Lee Museum.
In the late 1980s, private developers secured the present day Fort Lee
Museum building for development of a strip mall. Fortunately for the citizens
of Fort Lee, then Councilmen Jack Alter and Michael Maggiano led an effort
to acquire the property for preservation. The result is the present day restored
1922 Palisade Bluestone exterior museum building, once a private home to
James Moore and his family. In the 1990s the building was preserved through
the efforts of the Borough via in-house staff (General Services) and in-kind
contributions from local builders. Then Councilman Tom Meyers worked
closely with then Fort Lee Historic Committee Chair Robert Donohue and the
preservation committee to oversee the renovation of the building.
The Fort Lee Museum is a place for students and scholars to research in
our archive, where graduate students from such institutions as NYU intern
and where residents can learn about the history of our Borough from 1776,
through our days as the first American film town, our place in history via the
George Washington Bridge, Palisades Amusement Park, the Riviera Nightclub
and our role as a 21st century community where we build for the future while
we preserve our past.

ForT Lee hISTorIC ParK
Fort Lee Historic Park, located off Hudson Terrace atop the Palisades,
is situated on a 33-acre site within Palisades Interstate Park. A blending
of educational history and scenic beauty, it is the metropolitan area’s only
reconstructed historic site. The focus of activity is an 11,000 square foot Visitor’s
Center, containing two floors of audio-visual displays, detailed exhibits and
a twelve-minute film presenting the story of Fort Lee’s role in the American
Revolution. A flow pattern, in chronological order, illustrates the story of how
General George Washington was forced to evacuate the area and begin his
famous retreat though New Jersey during the winter of 1776-77. Visitors move
past a wide range of exhibits including a diorama, slide presentation and a
detailed descriptive text.
In addition to its historic features, the facility contains a 204-seat
auditorium, bookstore gift shop, restrooms and an information center. The
main floor is barrier free, and there are accommodations for the disabled. A
variety of cultural events occur in the evenings and on weekends.
Outside, trails lead to two overlook points. The grounds remain open
daily (weather permitting) and the Visitor’s Center is open from 10AM to
5PM Wednesday - Sunday, from March to December. The building is open in
January and February on weekends only. There is no entrance fee. Groups and
bus tours are welcome for self-guided visits. For further information contact
the Palisades Interstate Park Commission at 201-768-1360 or 201-461-1776.
PaLISaDeS INTerSTaTe ParK
Since their discovery in 1524 by Giovanni De Verrazano, the volcanically-
formed Palisades (“fence of stakes”) and the glacially-formed Hudson River
have provided food, shelter, transportation, and recreation for millions
of people. In 1900, Congress established the Palisades Interstate Park
Commission to preserve the natural beauty of the land and to promote
outdoor recreation. The Commission currently administers over 100,000 acres
of parkland in Bergen County, NJ and Rockland and Orange Counties, NY.
Rich in history and natural resources, the 2500-acre NJ Section has been
named a National Historic Landmark and a National Natural Landmark.
Easily accessible from all major roads and local bus routes, the Park contains
picnic areas, scenic roads, two boat basins, a boat launching ramp, hiking and
cross-country skiing trails, two historic sites, a nature sanctuary, and seasonal
refreshment stands.
Park activities include:
Boating: Two marinas accommodate 252 boats for a season running
from May 1 to October 31. Gas is sold at both basins and transient slips are
available for a nightly fee. Inflatable boats may not be launched from within
Park boundaries. Trailered, registered boats under 24’ can be launched under
52
the George Washington Bridge during the summer season.
Hiking: The Long Path (top of the cliffs) and the Shore Trail (along the
River) begin near the Bridge and continue to the NY State line. Six sets of
stairs connect the trails and make for circular routes. Camping, fires and cliff-
climbing are prohibited. Trail maps are available at the Fort Lee Historic Park
bookstore.
Cross-Country Skiing: At State Line Lookout, there are five trails varying
in length and degree of difficulty. Trails are marked and maintained but not
groomed. Skiers are advised to wait for a four-inch snow cover before using
the trails.
Fishing/Crabbing: In season and according to the NJ Fish and Game
Code, fishing and crabbing are permitted from the seawalls and shoreline
- no licenses are required. Species caught in the River include striped bass,
catfish, white perch, tommyrod, shad, eels, and blue-claw crabs.
Picnicking: Four areas along the River offer parking, picnic tables and
restrooms. Barbecuing in grills (no ground fires at any time) is permitted only
in these four sites - areas cannot be reserved and picnickers may bring their
own grills and charcoal.
Bicycling: Permitted only on Henry Hudson Drive and Alpine Approach
Road subject to the following conditions:
1. Cyclists must have non-motorized, multi speed bicycles
with minimum wheel size of 24 inches, meeting all state and
local safety requirements.
2. Cyclists must be over 14 years of age and must wear protective
helmets.
3. Cycling is permitted daily from dawn to dusk.
4. Cyclists must obey all traffic laws and Park regulations.
Note: Bicycles of any kind are not permitted on hiking trails, cross-country
skiing trails, the
Englewood Approach Road (Palisade Avenue) or the Parkway.
Historical Exhibits & Interpretive Programs: In addition to Fort Lee
Historic Park, patrons can enjoy rotating historical exhibits and special
interpretive programs at the Historic Kearney House (a.k.a Cornwallis’ H.Q.)
located at the Alpine Picnic Area. This circa 1750 dwelling is open weekends
only May through October from noon to 5P.M. - other hours by appointment.
For further information, call 201-768-1360.
All park areas close at sunset. Parking fees are charged seasonally. Pets
are not permitted in picnic areas, or on paved surfaces. Properly leashed, they
may be taken on trails. Permits are required for groups of more than 25, buses
and commercial photography. Further information is available from the Park
Commission’s NJ office at 201-768-1360 and www.njpalisades.org.
