Being an Inventor or Innovator We often talk about problems but seldom talk about solutions. It is easy to talk about problems but difficult to talk about solution. This is because solutions requires thinking. Solution requires planning and action. Solution requires diligence. When we only talk about problems, we slowly become a ‘lazy’ person. We also often get depressed. YIC is designed to provide a platform for us to identify a problem and then take charge of solving it. An inventor is a leader. A leader leads which means she is in front. Being in front requires courage. When we are in front we have to make our own decisions on which path to take. If there is no path ahead, the leader has to create one. Inventors are makers of their own paths. They do not only follow. However, before taking or making a path or road, we have to be clear of our direction. To know the direction, we need to be clear of our destination, otherwise we may create a road that leads nowhere. Thus, an invention requires clear objectives and goals in order to chart and build a solution that truly solves problems. The more clearly we understand the goal, the better our solution would be. Building solutions is like sailing a yacht. The yacht will move where the wind blows. We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can adjust the sails to change the direction of the yacht to reach our destination. The sail is an invention. It does not change the direction of the wind. The goal of the Captain is to change the direction of the yacht and not the wind. So the sail was invented to do just that. The oceans are wide and they are monotonous and lonely. Ask any sailor and he will tell you that it can sometimes be depressing. The journey of an inventor or problem solver is often like this. It is not always fun and fanfare. It requires hard work. An inventor does not give up easily when a problem is not easy to solve. This is one of the key success factor of a successful inventor. She is diligent and persistent. But more than anything else, the inventor believes in herself. In today’s world with advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence and IoT, new careers are being created as many old ones disappear. The world is changing as we move into uncharted waters. It is both wonderful and daunting. I hope you have the courage and adaptability to manage your journey in these fast changing times. Dr. Mohamed Yunus Yasin fifffflffffiff President Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI)

In it my hope that by participating in programmes such as these, you are able to get a glimpse of what is in store for you ahead. This is why Young Inventors Challenge is not about the invention but about the inventor. The judges not only look at your invention but also – YOU, the inventor, and how you solved the problem. Finally we like to thank our funding partners CIMB Foundation, Kolej Yayasan UEM, Yayasan Hasanah and UMW Holdings Berhad for their amazing support without which we would never have reached this far. Also thank you to the amazing headmasters and teachers/ mentors who have facilitated the participation of students in YIC. Thank you to the ASTI team of volunteers, trainers, judges and the secretariat. And for the students, it is our hope that YIC has somehow contributed to you being an inventor and problem solver. We hope you become an inventor with a heart. A person that wants to make this world better. It is our hope that you will continue this journey after YIC. In your hands are our future.

Dear Parents and Young Innovators, This year we hear about many uncertainties; but one thing has become almost constant. We again hear about temperature records being repeatedly broken and climate impacts felt in unprecedented wildfires, floods, storms and droughts worldwide. As many countries converge in UAE for COP28 this year, new inherent issues will arise, chief amongst them will be on the world no on track to meet the goals and how new actions and roadmaps will be created to put things back in place. This year’s Young Inventors Challenge (YIC) theme continue to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where YIC‘s vision is to start students off early on emerging issues and to encourage high school children to cooperate as a team to solve these issues. The innovation is then communicated and shared through YIC’s platform to other children across nations to raise awareness and increase discussions amongst them. 2023 marks the 11th year of YIC and this year we have received 571 applications from across South East Asia and new entrants from South Asia, Africa and Europe. After the initial application process, we received 508 proposals. The proposal submission this year is amongst the highest ever recorded at 88%. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teams for their enthusiasm as well as the YIC secretariat team for ensuring that the teams are well taken care for. YIC continues to be a growing congregation of young innovators and this is seen with the partnership with The Project Management Institute Malaysia Chapter (PMIMY) to launch the Project Management Competition for Young Inventors Challenge 2023. For this competition, a total of 155 Invention Pitch Video and Project Report were submitted and 30 teams were shortlisted for the final session. The challenge will not be complete without the financial assistance and grants from our funders, many of whom are continuously supporting us annually. Our funders amongst others are CIMB Foundation, Kolej Yayasan UEM, Yayasan Hasanah and UMW Holdings Berhad. Further, our group of volunteers and judges have been instrumental in ensuring that the challenge is a success and the innovations submitted have been accessed at its best. I hope YIC will continue to boost budding innovators and act as a catalyst to spur children to come together to share ideas and solve issues together. I am also grateful for our likeminded partners who have come together with a dream of building a nation of innovators beginning from the grassroots. Mr. Tan Cher Hao Project Director Young Inventors Challenge (YIC) 2023

Collaboration in the world of not-for-profits is the cornerstone of success, and this milestone celebrates the intersection of innovation, project management and youth empowerment. Both organizations share lot in common, probably the most powerful of synergies being the drive to arm young people to turn their ideas into a reality, recognizing that they will be the visionaries and project leaders of the future. I am immensely proud of the collaboration between PMI Malaysia chapter and ASTI and this year’s YIC presented itself as a great platform to bring together the best of both organizations, combining creativity and innovation with the structured approach of the project management practice, which is fundamental as a life skill for all youths in our society. Our jointly led Project Management Competition for the shortlisted teams was a worthy testament to our shared commitment to social impact, giving back and making volunteering more meaningful through the sharing and exchange of capability and expertise. My highest regards to ASTI on a very successful 11th year of this initiative, and extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the participants, finalists, the winners, judges, volunteer, mentors, committee members and partners as I celebrate this achievement with you! Dr. Joshua Netto President Project Management Institute Malaysia Chapter (PMIMY)

Ms. Florence Tan Deputy Chief Technologist for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters Hello everyone, My name is Florence Tan. I am the deputy chief technologist for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA headquarters. I would like to share with you part of my life's journey and I hope by doing so that you can also know you can achieve and be anything you wish to be as long as you have a dream and willing to work hard to achieve that dream and most importantly, to believe in yourself. Now, I was born in a small town in the state of Johor in Malaysia and I always wanted to be a space explorer ever since I saw Star Trek reruns in my relative’s house in Kuala Lumpur while growing up. Now, despite being from a little small know more was a small town with little access or no access to a lot of frills people would have in the big cities. I wanted to explore not only the world, but the universe. My parents gave me a really clear goal, graduate from university and I kept that goal front and center and made sure that I worked hard in school to achieve that dream. I am eternally grateful to the Malaysian government for providing me with a loan to obtain my bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Maryland in the US. Now there's a saying in Malay, “Katak Dibawah Tempurong”. Like a frog underneath a coconut shell. It's a saying that basically describes somebody who is not sophisticated and not wise to the ways of the world. In my small town, to U.S, my first ride on an airplane was this 33-hour ride to the U.S. and it was interminable. And even during the time that I landed and my subsequent long stay in the U.S., I always felt a little bit like that little frog. Out of my depth in so many ways. I remember seeing aluminium foil and glad wrap, which is a Saran wrap or plastic wrap, and I never seen it. And I thought, wow, I only saw banana leaves and paper for wrappers. I had to learn to speak up for myself and figure out what's next. What I didn't lack is this ambition, this burning desire to succeed. I eventually got an MBA and a master's degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University and the tuition was actually courtesy of my very generous employers. During my second year, I was lucky to meet my good friend Carol in physics Three. She's still my friend today. She mentioned that NASA, the most prestigious space exploration agency in the world, was looking for interns. I jumped at this.

I interviewed and I managed to secure an internship at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center. At that time, I had another piece of luck. As a foreign student, I could only work in the university. But luckily for me, my university had a partnership with NASA Goddard, and technically I was working for my university, but at NASA. When I graduated, I asked my colleagues at NASA if they had a job for me. And lo and behold, I guess I worked hard and they gave me a job working for a contractor. I got a visa as a foreign worker, and that was on a data on the Pioneer Venus mission. And little did I know at the time that this was the first of nine mass spectrometer missions that I supported while I was at NASA. Okay, now I've arrived at NASA, I can achieve my dreams. From then on, my limits of realizing my goals were the limits I set for myself. As one of my bosses said, the sky's the limit. Now, as an engineer, I worked really hard. It wasn't easy. I felt out of place, wondered if I was in the right place and whether if I belonged. Luckily, I had really good mentors, and along the way, many people helped me. They got me to training, they connected me to jobs, and they taught me. I am eternally grateful to those mentors. I also learned to ask questions and push myself out of my Asian nature. Now, Westerners tend to be more direct, and I still perceive today that being direct might be being confrontational. And it's not the case, right? People just want to know the facts. So, in my years at Goddess Spaceflight center, besides the Pioneer Venus mission, I built, designed electronics road software for eight more mass spectrometers. And I was eventually promoted to be the Elite Electrical Engineer for mass spectrometer on the Curiosity Rover called Sam Sample analysis at Mars. And that rover is still operating on Mars for eleven years now. We also worked on the Maven Orbiter around Mars, and I also was electro lead for that mass spectrometer. I was a designer for the Cassini mass spectrometer, ion neutral mass spectrometer, and also one that landed gently on the surface of Titan, which is a moon around Saturn. That's among the few that I've worked on. I am so interested in space exploration is in my blood, and so much so that I even married a fellow NASA engineer. After realizing my dreams, I'm now on my second part of my life's journey. I would like to share with you my passion for science. With you exciting future scientists and engineers, I feel it's time to give back to the world. It's gifted me with so much with exciting and interesting experiences. I volunteer in schools today to encourage students to explore the world and to explore a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. I have had the strong and continued and unwavering support from my husband, my children, my parents, my siblings. And I really hope that you too will have to hold on to that dream and that support from your community to achieve your dreams and your ambition. Life puts up a lot of challenges and stay the path. Have that resolve and the fortitude to tackle these challenges to achieve your ambition. Remember to take care of yourself, maintain good sleep habits, exercise, diet habits, and practice daily. Gratitude. I'd like to congratulate all of you for making it this far, and I hope that's not the end of your journey, but the beginning. And I also congratulate YIC for providing a platform forum for these amazing young persons to showcase their ability. Thank you very much.

INTRODUCTION The Association of Science, Technology, and Innovation (ASTI) is a non-governmental and non-profit oriented organization (NGO) working towards empowering young children's’ interest in science through the act of doing where learning is achieved from discovering scientific principles themselves. In order to achieve this vision ASTI has experimented with various projects and has successfully gained traction on programs such as the Science Fair for Young Children (SFYC), Young Inventors Challenge (YIC), Creative, and Critical Thinking Camp (CCTC), and others. Each of these programs are interlinked in order to provide a platform for participation of young students that is holistic and inclusive in nature. YIC is part of this vision, where it requires teams of up to 2-5 members to put their minds together and come up with an invention. The purpose of the program is to build and encourage the creative and inventive capability of young people. ASTI started this program in 2013 as a pilot where 12 teams participated from 12 schools, and the response has been remarkable ever since – the project has been growing at almost 100 percent year on year with over 100 teams participating and about 3000 students participating in the program. ASTI is proud to mention that Young Inventors Challenge has received international recognition from the Ministry of Education Malaysia for the year 2017 to 2022. In 2019, YIC was also shortlisted from over 1500 education projects from around the world to participate in the conference and competition called “Reimagining Education” held in London and organised by the respected rating agency, QS international. YIC was also recognized as the top 10 projects run by an ALUMNI of the International Visitors Leadership Programme (IVLP) conducted by the US State department. During the outbreak of COVID-19, ASTI was deeply concerned on organising YIC, but we do feel that education and learning is something that cannot be postponed nor can it be stopped, especially so for young people. In view of this and in protecting the safety and well-being of all our national and international program participants, we announced an optimal solution for YIC. Hence, YIC SPECIAL EDITION was developed in 2020 and conducted through a submission of video-based inventions by participating teams, followed by Online Viva. This year is our 11th year anniversary, we continued with online YIC 2023 and we received a total of 571 applications of which 508 teams submitted proposals with a wide range of ideas related to the theme from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, India and Sri Lanka. We had shortlisted 217 teams to participate in the final competition via Invention Pitch Video and Project Report submission. As of 17 September 2023, a total of 155 teams had successfully submitted their Invention Pitch Video and Project Report from 6 countries which has been marked by panel of 80 judges.

On the 13th October 2023, we informed the TOP 30 team who has been qualified for the Online Viva Session. The VIVA session was conducted on the 4th November 2023 to determine the One (1) Platinum, Two (2) Gold, Five (5) Silver and Seven (7) Bronze and fifteen (15) consolation award winners. On the, 6th December 2023 we announced the winners via virtual winner’s announcement ceremony. Additionally for the first time, The Project Management Institute Malaysia Chapter (PMIMY) and The Association of Science Technology and Innovation (ASTI) jointly launched Project Management Competition for Young Inventors Challenge 2023 Shortlisted Teams where the team can learn "How to run a project in a Professional Manner. Top three team were identified and awarded as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner and One BEST Team will receive an award by the Project Management Institute Malaysia Chapter (PMIMY) in December 2023 under student’s category. The aim and objectives of YIC are: • To help develop future inventors. • To give an opportunity to young and future inventors to develop and showcase their inventions. • To help young inventors to experience the inventive cycle, from conceptualisation to product/prototype. • To introduce the idea of "using inventions as a tool to make a positive change in society". • To give opportunities to young people who are inventive to promote their ideas to the outside world. By participating in YIC, the participants would also: • Produce an original invention and receive recognition for participating in the event. • Meet and network with other inventors who share a similar passion. • Develop creative and innovative thinking skills. • Develop teamwork dynamics to solve problems. • Use resources such as the Internet, library and experts to hone their research skills. • Learn to document their invention project. • Enhance self-esteem and confidence. • Acquire public presentation and writing skills.
