HOW HELPING AT
HOME DEVELOP
YOUR CHARACTER

TASK 3 DIGITAL PRODUCT
NIK NURAZWANA AQILAH BINTI NIK DIN

Someone’s character is very important which refers to their personality. Showing good
characteristics is so important today and essential to developing over life. According to
Pradhan (2009), “a character refers to the distinguishing feature or quality of an individual”
(p. 3). People with good personalities are more trustworthy and honest while people with
bad personalities have terrible attitudes and should be avoided. Major factors that can
affect the personality are family and environment such as friends. This is believed to be
the major factor because they are so close to each other. According to Mery Yanti and
Marzuki (2020), “exemplary parents can provide examples of behavior to their children” (p.
459). For example, children with a problematic family tend to have bad attitudes whether
at home or outside like a chip off the old block. Friendship seems to be like two peas in a
pod that are very similar to each other even in their behavior. Children should be good at
choosing and finding good friends, not a bad one. Here, families, especially parents,
should play a role in developing a good personality and character towards their children.
One of the ways parents can develop one’s character is to teach the children to help at
home. By that, children can develop good character such as to be responsible person,
learn to tolerate with people and be punctual in themselves.

First and foremost, by helping at home children can develop a sense of responsibility.
Responsibility here means being in charge of something such as duty or a part of the
chores. As children, we should take the responsibility to help our parents. It is not just
about helping financially but helping them to reduce their workload because they must be
busy at the workplace and must be tired to handle things at home. That is why parents
need to teach their children to help them with chores even from an early age. This is
because one’s personality needs to be shaped from a very young age. For example, when
children are used to helping their parents, they are developing a sense of responsibility in
themselves whether they realize it or not. After that, they will be able to be responsible
such as helping the teacher, completing their homework, taking good care of school
properties, being well-disciplined and others. They also will learn to take responsibility for
their own lives in the future when they grow up. In summary, by helping at home children
can develop a sense of responsibility to be applied in their lives for their good.

Other than that, helping at home can also develop an attitude of tolerance. Tolerance is
when we understand and balance the work between each other. For example, children can
divide the chores fairly. One of them can do the laundry and fold clothes while the others
can wash dishes, cook, tidy the house and others. This not only develops tolerance but
can also strengthen the relationship between family members to be closer and understand
each other. Besides, siblings can also exchange their work so that everyone is able to do
each task and do not underestimate others’ work. Then, we can apply this character by
being tolerant in group work for learning. Tasks can be divided fairly to each group
member to gain cooperation and tolerance and avoid free riders in groups since it is a
group work and each member should take part. We also can help each other’s part so that
the work will be easier to do and quickly prepared. Lack of tolerance in a group can affect
the work quality and misunderstanding among group members. I believe that a good
attitude of tolerance can be nurtured and developed for someone’s character by helping at
home.

Last but not least, by helping at home we can develop ourselves to be punctual and on
time. Chores usually will be done in the morning. Parents who work during office hours will
go to work at eight and return home at five. They must be tired and need rest after work.
So as good children, we need to help our parents by doing the chores. For instance, we
have to wake up early at six, eat breakfast for energy and do the chores like clean the
kitchen, wash and dry clothes, tidy the house, cook and so on. Wash and dry clothes need
to be done in the morning maybe at ten because we need to hang the clothes under the
sun to make them smell cleaner and fresher (Hung, 2015). After that, we have to make
sure all the chores must be done before noon so that we can take a rest and do other
work. Therefore, it is not only to ease the burden of our parents but also make us more
appreciative and punctual on time by doing worthwhile things. According to Sultana and
Siti Nor Milah Rashid (2013), “time management is the foundation of discipline that largely
determined the quality of learning” (p. 52). Briefly, we can develop good character and
personality such as being punctual by helping at home.

In conclusion, helping at home can develop great character in someone such as being
responsible, tolerant, and punctual on time. I believe that parents should teach their
children to help at home and it can be an effective way to boost their character. Plus, it will
be easier if children are taught to help their parents from an early age. Parents also should
show good attitudes in front of them by helping each other by doing chores at home and
children will follow and be motivated to do it as the saying goes the apple does not fall far
from the tree. When children are not taught to help at home, they tend to be disrespectful
to their parents and lack common sense whether at home or outside. This is because they
are not exposed to things that can help them develop their character in a good way and
apply it in their lives. So it is important to develop someone’s character in a good way so
that they will live a good life in society.
