Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein, the Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister was the Guest of
Honour at the Annual Speech Day and Prize-giving on April 11, 1962. On his arrival he
was greeted by the V.I. Cadet Corps Guard of Honour which included Crown Prince
Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei (second from left). The Prince and his brother Mohamed had
joined the V.I. the previous year. The Prince played an active part in school activities and
ascended the Brunei throne five years later.

In his Speech to the assembly, Tun Razak paid tribute to the VI Headmaster, Dr. G.E.D.
Lewis as this was to be his last Speech Day before he retired. Sir Alexander Oppenheim,
the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malaya, addressed the audience. The wife of the
Education Minister, Che Rahmah, gave away the prizes. An exhibition of school work in
the classrooms and laboratories followed by a variety concert capped the day's events.
On 11 April 1968, at 5:00 p.m. by helicopter, celebrations of the seventy-fifth year of
establishment of the school began. Encik Khir Johari, Education Minister, who landed on
the school grounds. The Prime Minister, YTM Tengku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and
Puan Sahrifah Rodziah, were joined by him, who came in a more conventional transport
mode with the escorts of outriders. The Tengku inspected the honor guard of 50 cadets and
80 members of the cadet community. The director, Mr. V. Murugasu, read his annual school
report for the gathering of dignitaries and parents in the school hall. The Malaysian Prime
Minister in the speech by Tengku praised the high level of education and discipline in the

V.I. Puan Sharifah Rodziah then awarded the prizes from Form One to Form Six to the best
candidates. The oldest known survivor, Mr. R. Thampipillay, was awarded a special award,
which he had been a teacher in the VI more than 30 years before the war.
At 7:30 p.m. the Cadet Band struck up to give an entertaining floodlit display. This was
followed by a fireworks display using fireworks manufactured by the members of the
Science and Maths Society, no less! Through it all, the public wandered through the various
classrooms and laboratories which were filled with exhibits of different aspects school life
and activities.
