D&I, A JOURNEY FOR ALL

ANNURAG BATRA Each of us would have grown up with notions of how one
is supposed to look and behave and what one can aspire
 [email protected] to, based on one’s station in life. Certain “truths” were
innocuously fed into our unsuspecting brains by our well-
meaning parents, who, in turn, learned these from their
elders. The movies that we enjoyed watching in our childhood, without
questioning the portrayal of characters, further calcified these ideas.

We should be grateful for the movement that has gained momentum
across the globe for inclusion of disadvantaged groups — be it women,
LGBTQ+ community, the differently-abled, and people of various races
or religions. The corporate world is taking a lead in ushering in enabling
policies, creating a safe environment for all and developing a zero-
tolerance policy for any misconduct or slur. And we all have the golden
opportunity to shed some of that old baggage and learn afresh.

TheAugustissueofBWPeoplePrimeisfocusedonDiversity&Inclusion.
This is following the D&I Awards we recently organised to honour the
work that several corporates are doing to genuinely bring about change.
These initiatives go beyond symbolism and take concrete shape, like:
Technology-enabled recruitment; rules that encourage reporting of
misconduct; checking of social media conversation to spot tendency
towards biases; emoluments, leaves and other benefits irrespective of
gender; enabling infrastructure like gender-neutral washrooms and
ramps for persons with disabilities; regular sensitisation programmes
and so on. Our D&I Awards and Event package is invigorating and
thought-provoking, with a lot of implementable ideas.

In addition, we bring to you a Pride special, based on our online
initiative in the Pride month. We salute the brave individuals who have
come out to disclose their gender identity, and for the work that they are
doing for healthcare, wellbeing and empowerment of other members of
the community.

The need for unshackling of old ideas that have gripped us for long, and
to believe in the potential of each individual — of others, as well as of
ourselves.

KALEIDOSCOPE OF PERSPECTIVES

The journeys of HR leaders in the 40Under40 section were
awesome. Someone emerging from small-town India and
reaching heights, someone juggling performing arts, home
and large teams at workplace, someone helping repatriation
of Indians stuck in the Gulf countries when Covid struck
makes for a fascinating reading for any reader, not just those
interested in the field. It’s an all-encompassing reading of
how the HR department has shaped up in India.

CORRIGENDUM

In the BW People Prime, June 2022 issue, the cover
page stated the name of Star India’s HR Head to be
Amrita Maheshwari. The correct name is Amita
Maheshwari.

In the coverage of 40Under40 Awards for the
year 2021, on page 36, Lakshmi C, MD and Lead
– Human Resources, Accenture in India has been
associated with Accenture for nearly two decades,
and not 11 years, as stated in the first paragraph of
the writeup.

On page 37 of the same writeup, her name has
been misspelt as Lakhsmi.
