EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S NOTE

IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE

ANNURAG BATRA The post-Covid education landscape is reflective of the
immense change in teaching learning methods, focus
[email protected] on life skills, and emphasis on how to learn, not what to
learn. There is a new energy, with young leaders taking
charge of giving shape to school and higher educa-
tion. And BW Education honours these change makers
through its ‘40 Under 40 Awards’, that were presented a few weeks
ago. In this issue, we not only highlight the achievers, but also carry
the coverage of an invigorating day-long session on the changes being
ushered in.

Change in the education world was also manifested in the NIRF
Ranking-2022 that has come up with some expected results but also a
few surprises. Institutions and colleges which have been the most cov-
eted campuses for many decades have failed to find spot in the Top 10
in their respective category, whereas colleges which were ignored as be-
ing in the second or third league have gate-crashed to be in the Top 10.
Moral of the story: Sitting complacent, basking in past laurels will not
take you places. Read our special story A Mirror to higher Education.

The need for change is also paramount in medical sciences. Randeep
Guleria of AIIMS describes how the technological advances in medicine
pose a challenge of constantly revamping curriculum and training med-
ical students. Other experts from biosciences fraternity interviewed for
this issue share how through interdisciplinary approach they are trying
to arrive at solutions to environment, health and other concerns.

Similarly, design as a field is gaining prominence to address mod-
ern day problems, as our interview with NID-Ahmedabad Director
Praveen Nahar, and interactions with other academics from leading
design institutes and departments reveal. All these interviews will pro-
vide rich insights into the changing needs of industry and society and
the aptitude and skill set that students should work on.

The right match between skills, rigorous hard work and attitude to
win was visible in Birmingham as our athletes overcame all mental
blocks to win medals in style. Enabling this transition in Indian sports
is the infrastructure that has been created in India in the last few
years, with Khelo India taking care of players’ training, nutrition, and
requirements; and a number of leagues coming up that are promoting
some very unusual sports for Indian context, like ice hockey. It is in
this ethos that players pick up courage to try something new, and this
is how four Indian women could win India’s first gold in a sport called
‘lawn bowls’. Enjoy reading our package sports, titled ‘Sports Becomes
A New Normal’.
