18 golf rules Many of you watched the final round of the LPGA Maybank Championship at KLGCC on 29/10/2023, where I was handling a ruling to Thai professional golfer, Atthaya Thitikul (AT) near 12th putting green. I received many queries from avid golfers wanting to know about the Ruling made. For the benefit of our members, here ‘s my conversation with AT… AT : Hi Ref DW : Yes, how may I help? AT : My ball moved after I preferred the lie. DW : Was your ball here? (referring to where it lies around the apron of green) AT : yes DW : Did you cause the ball to move? AT : No, I didn’t. After I placed it, I noticed it moved. DW : Alright, if you didn’t cause the ball to move, it is deemed to have been moved by natural forces. And since your ball is not on the putting green, you do not need to replace it. You are to play the ball as it lies in the new position without penalty. AT : Ok, Thank you. The applicable Rule under this situation is found in Rule 9.3 which states the following: If natural forces (such as wind or water) cause a player’s ball at rest to move: There is no penalty, and the ball must be played from its new spot. However, there are 2 exceptions to take note of: - Exception 1 – If the player’s ball on the putting green moves after the player had already lifted and replaced the ball on the spot from which it moved: The ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated). This is true no matter what caused it to move (including natural forces). Exception 2 –If the player puts the original ball or another ball into play by dropping, placing, or replacing it, and natural forces cause the ball at rest to move and come to rest in another area of the course or out of bounds, the ball must be replaced on its original spot (which if not known must be estimated) As you have noticed, once I established the fact that player didn’t cause the ball to move, and further confirmed that the ball at rest in general area had come to rest in same area of the course, the player must play the ball from the new spot. Hope you have learnt another Rule that will help you in your game. Happy Golfing. oasis permai january-march 2024 Ladies Captain What was the Ruling given to Atthaya Thitikul during LPGA Maybank Championship 2023?
