4 GOLF CHAIRMAN MESSAGE / club notice Message from the golf committee Chairman Dear Members, As the chairman of our golf club's committee, I am honoured to address you again on matters concerning our club's welfare. Upholding and maintaining the status of a five-star golf club requires the fullest support and cooperation from all club members. Firstly, I'd like to address the issue of golf course cleanliness. Maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and tidiness throughout the course is a matter of utmost importance. Our staff works tirelessly to ensure that the course is in top condition, but it's also our responsibility as members to keep the course clean and tidy. So please, let's all do our part by not littering, using the trash bins, and avoiding damaging the course in any way. Secondly, I'd like to discuss the importance of discipline among members. Our club operates on principles of respect, sportsmanship, and proper etiquette. Therefore, every member must adhere to these values, on and off the course. It's incumbent upon all of us to treat fellow members, staff, and the course itself with respect and dignity. Please also remember that any form of unacceptable behaviour may result in disciplinary action accordingly. Thirdly, I'd like to remind everyone of the importance of following competition rules and handicapping. The rules of golf ensure that competitions are played fairly and equitably, and our handicapping system is designed to make matches more competitive. Therefore, every member must understand and follow these rules. It's also essential that all handicaps are updated regularly to ensure fairness in competitions. In conclusion, our golf club is built on values that include cleanliness, discipline, sportsmanship, and fair play. By adhering to these values, we can ensure that our club remains a premier destination for golfers, where everyone can enjoy the sport and camaraderie that comes with it. Help us to uphold and maintain our premier status in the golf industry. Thank you. Ng Say Hoe oasis permai APRIL-JUNE 2023

18 Congratulations to our Ladies Captain, Deborah Wong for her appointment as the Malaysian Golf Association’s (MGA) Chairman of Rules and Amateur Status INTERVIEW Upclose and personal with Deborah Wong • The first woman in the country to ever hold the position and represented Malaysia at the Rules Conference at St Andrews in February 2023. • Attended numerous Rules events hosted by the R&A such as Level 3 Rules Seminar, TARS and TTTS in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. • Refereed numerous times at the Malaysian Open, LPGA Qualifying events and Asia Pacific Golf Confederation Senior Amateur Championship in Malaysia. • Officiated at the R&A’s inaugural Asia Pacific Women’s Amateur Championship at Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore in 2018 and again at Singapore Island Country Club in 2023. What made you want to gain an in-depth knowledge of Golf Rules? In 2000, I was appointed the lady captain of Kota Permai, and as lady captain, I needed to know more about Golf Rules. I am thankful to our MGA/MALGA referee, Maria Yoon, who conducted Rules classes for the few of us who were interested to learn, and that was truly helpful. I went on to attend the Rules School run by the R&A in Singapore in 2006 and passed with distinction (93 marks) on my first attempt, and I was really motivated. How did you feel when appointed MGA’s Chairman of Rules & Amateur Status? And on top of that, the first woman to have been given this opportunity. The appointment came as a shock, but I humbly accepted when I came to realise that this is an honour where the MGA recognises the capability and potential of women who can contribute their fair share, just like their male counterparts. The MGA has walked the talk to promote the Women in Golf Charter (WIGC) in this aspect. What are your aspirations and wish to achieve during your tenure as Chairman of Rules & Amateur Status? I hope to see more golfers interested in learning the Rules of Golf and playing golf according to the Rules and etiquette. I wish to see more golf club management, committee, and staff, learning the Rules of Golf and use passing Rules Seminar exams as benchmark and pre-requisite in hiring staff. I like to see more competent and qualified referees, especially from the younger generation and women, not just for local events but also at the international level. I hope to continue to improve the Referees' SOP and work with the MGA to improve the operational efficiency in Rules administration as well as complete the translation of Rules to Bahasa Malaysia. Are there any areas you feel can be improved in promoting Golf Rules to golfers in Malaysia? Besides the above, we will continue to enhance and conduct Rules Education at various golf clubs within the country. I would like to promote the use of the Rules of Golf app. The R&A has stopped printing the small Rules booklets and is now promoting the use of the digital Rules App. Currently, only 2.4% of golfers in Malaysia have downloaded the app. I hope to see every golfer, download the apps, access, use and play according to the Rules. Do you remember the first event you refereed? What was the experience like? I think it was a local event which wasn't too pressurising. But the real test was the 2008 Maybank Malaysian Open, which was a European Tour event then, held here in Kota Permai. I was part of the Rules Team with the European Tour Referees, I felt nervous initially but was thankful to have learnt so much from the senior referees throughout the event. When you attended the R&A Rules Conference at St Andrews, were there many women representing their countries? Sad to say, there were not many women. I would say only 15% of the delegates who attended were women. So, it is not just in our country but globally, women's presence still has room for improvement. How do you think the WIGC can help enable more women to partake in the golf industry at all levels? WIGC will continue to work with MGA affiliates. golf clubs and industry players, to create awareness and highlight the success and strength of women, to gain support for women who have the potential and create opportunities for them to shine, not only as golfers but also as referees, management staff and industry influencers. oasis permai APRIL-JUNE 2023
3. When putting, make sure you see how the ball starts to roll. Is the line rolling straight to the target line and passing through the gate? What is a Panadol putt? How to use a birdie putt, par putt or crucial par to win the match inside of a 4ft to 3ft putt? Here's the perfect drill that I use to practice, the key to making those putts be able to roll the ball to the target line. 19 Struggle with Panadol Putts? TEE TALK TEE Talk WILSON CHOO Head coach of Golf Partner Golf School with oasis permai APRIL-JUNE 2023 1. Use 2 tees to make a gate about one grip length away from the ball. 2. Align the ball line to the target. As it gets easier, you can narrow the gate and the margin of error will be less as well. Hope this drill will help those who struggle with starting the ball on the line.
