teaching PHILOSOPHY My Teaching Philosophy Information of Courses Taught Teaching Strategies Teaching and Learning Materials “Students learn best when they feel welcomed, comfortable, and safe” 1
My teaching philosophy is in line with the National Education Philosophy which aims to develop individual potential in intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical fitness and attitude. Through this philosophy, I teach consciously that students need opportunities to develop themselves in the aspects of their potential. I see my role as a facilitator of this process. This also means that I try my best to learn, refresh, review and update my knowledge before the teaching and learning sessions take place in my classroom. I prefer to give a brief summary to my students at the beginning of the semester. Students need to have good knowledge not only in learning theory but also in communication skills to excel in the courses they take. I believe that teaching is not just about delivering course content, but also about promoting meaningful learning and lifelong learning to students. The relationship between students and lecturers should be encouraged and improved continuously. With this good relationship, the students can have a more comfortable discussion inside or outside the class. Besides, I think that to be a good and effective lecturer, I need to treat students with respect. I must make an effort to know each student's name, and their strengths and weaknesses. I have to try to adapt each student's question at any time and not only during the lecture session. I also need to help if students do not understand what has been taught from time to time. My job is not to show them what I know, but to teach them what they need to know, and more importantly to facilitate their learning sessions. Ultimately, I hope to instill an interest in learning in students. I wish to teach my students that institutes of higher learning are more than just exams and grades. I hope that the real value of their education is not only found in their grade point average or resume, but also in the knowledge they gain. MY PHILOSOPHY “it is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge” -Albert Einsteinteaching 2
To ensure the effective learning experiences related to environmental planning courses, I adopted a wide variety of strategies focusing on student centered activities, ground survey experiences, critical thinking activities, and modern applications and tools to encourage active participation. I believe the learning process is meaningful to students when they can enjoy the process and appreciate the knowledge by adapting the fundamentals behind it in problem-solving activities. Adapting the theory to the current environmental issues will increase the student’s understanding. Hence, I always make sure my lesson plan and teaching approach will provide students with opportunities to gain the necessary skills to take control of and become active participants in their learning. I strongly believe that the knowledge gained through active participation will stay and grow together with student development. I also bring students on field trips and assign fieldwork assignments. This activity provides students with an excellent opportunity to learn skills which are not possible to teach during the lecture. I make sure there is a two-way interaction between me and the students. I posed questions and used them to start the discussion. I normally prepare short problem-based essays or materials related to real-world problems in between lecture activities. In my class, question and answer session is often conducted. Students also encouraged to share their opinion in the class. I believe in giving students a say in what should be learned. This shared control approach gives students a voice in the classroom and makes them feel more comfortable in their environment. These activities are excellent way to foster the life-long skills to be adapted in everyday life. Sometimes, I used hand-drawing and quick poster exercise to accommodate visual-learner types of students aptitude. Not only that, this type of activity will stimulate the creativity and psychomotor skills. I also adopted short essay reflection and peer evaluation in allowing students to give feedback on class activities. I also make sure reading materials and lecture notes are accessible by students through Putrablast. This to ensure those students who lost their focus during lecture able to do revision and study independently. Beyond striving to ensure that students learn the fundamental content of the courses I teach, I work to make this course interesting while aim to foster the critical thinking skills and facilitate the acquisition of lifelong learning skills. I also not afraid of trying new ways of doing things inside the classroom and willing to learn new technology to support students learning experiences. STRATEGIES teaching 3

Statement & evidence that innovation and creativity are used in teaching & learning Teaching strategies used to simulate & foster higher thinking skills CREATIVITY Innovation and in Teaching & Learning 15
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY STATEMENT Technology tools are most effective in engaging Y generations of students in the learning process. At the same time, natural and geo settings will give the opportunities to the student in appreciating man-environment relationship of knowledge practicality. Blending these two elements in teaching and learning process will increase the student performance and understanding. These approaches will empower an active learners students. Hence, the student are exposed to the real-world environment. 16 I need to be creative in teaching to get and retain students' attention, and for them to remain motivated in the classroom. The wide variety of innovative teaching made the learning process more interactive, fun, exciting, and advanced.
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY PutraBlast E-Learning: PutraBLAST was an e-learning platform used as a virtual classroom for the student. Lecture notes, assignments, and self-access learning are provided and remotely accessible. PutraBlast for KOM3305 PutraBlast for KOM3431 PutraBLAST is an info structure management and delivery of learningcontent, teaching and learning evaluation, progress tracking, andmonitoring the learning process in UPM. 17
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY WhatsApp group Social Media: WhatsApp group is used as the medium beyond the class session discussion. Direct interaction through virtual group discussion allow students to ask quick questions , sharing quick information, announcement, and update the class schedule, etc. 18
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY Community exposure and engagement Field Trip: One day trip to Istana Seri Menanti Kuala Pilah is part of my teaching plan for KOM3305 course. 22 TO SIMULATE & FOSTER HIGHER THINKING SKILLS Teaching STRATEGIES
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY Round table discussion Round table I use round table discussions, problembased learning, and case studies into my teaching methods. This strategy allows students to express their opinions and share their thoughts in problem-solving scenario exercises during class activities. It also encourages students to dispute and critique their peers' opinions and ideas. As a result, higher-order cognitive skills can be enhanced. I used this strategy for both KOM3305 and KOM3431 courses. 23
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY Mind mapping exercise Mind mapping Mind mapping exercises were used in my class for brainstorming sessions and were widely used to assist students in visualising issues and stimulating students' critical thinking abilities. It also assists students in organising their ideas and understanding the fundamentals of the material being taught. I placed it on the classroom wall to assist students in remembering the topic for mind mapping. I used this strategy for both KOM3305 and KOM3431 courses. 24
INNOVATION & CREATIVITY Public service announcement Public service announcement (PSA) is group assignment assigned to all students. There are required to produce a short video contains basic information and short story of subject matters to be published and shared to public via social media.
