Questions with Kaya 58 | Fall 2023 What is the most rewarding aspect of serving AOII as ED? I’m honored to serve in this role for two primary reasons. First, because I deeply believe this work is meaningful. I believe in the power of the spaces that sororities create for our members to grow, to learn, to feel a sense of being both valued and valuable, to develop leadership skills with a safety net of supportive people around you, and to be mentored and to serve as a mentor and guide to others to follow their own similar but unique personal development path. All of these things make AOII incredibly relevant in today’s world and that our society and communities need this kind of leadership and role modeling. Second, I love this work because of the exceptionally smart, kind, capable, and incredibly ambitious people that I get to work with every day. Our staff and volunteers support and motivate me even on tough days and through tough decisions. I am so grateful for the strong female friendships that have shaped my life for decades. There is nothing better than knowing people believe in you even when you doubt yourself. AOII reminds me of that love and inspiration every day. What is the most commonly asked question you receive? Something I hear often is to clarify whether AOII is a business or a sisterhood. My response is that it is both. Of course, we were founded as an organization based on sustaining friendship and love for a lifetime. We have also built a business - one that is created, owned, and lead by women - that sustains our sisterhood with rules and regulations and expectations for each member. I believe our Founders had this foresight; they articulated the need to abide by all the rules and regulations of this society. Our business plan centers solely around sustaining and supporting our sisterhood and ensuring our success in the future. When you look back on 2023, what stands out as the Fraternity’s greatest successes? I am always inspired when I reflect on the great work and accomplishments of our organization, and I remain incredibly grateful for the many exceptionally talented people who contribute to our success. We started 2023 with our most ambitious and largest Leadership Academy that we have ever hosted, with over a thousand participants and dozens of facilitators onboarding our new collegiate officers. This summer we gathered in person at Convention for the first time in four years to celebrate our sisterhood and recognize our members and chapters who bring so much light to our world. This fall we reopened our International Headquarters and Archives Museum which honors our past, present, and future and is a home for every single AOII. And these are just the really, really big things!!! There are countless ways that AOIIs have enriched one another’s lives through service and sisterhood this year. We remain relevant thanks to the good works that each of us do; everything from leading a chapter team or event, serving as a local volunteer, or even just texting a sister who needs to know she is being thought of and loved. Each of these acts is an example of how AOII fulfills our goals and Inspires Ambition in one another.
