Ournew home
Update on our new International HQ
When each of us pledged Alpha Omicron Pi we made
a mutual commitment to our Fraternity. Throughout our college days we learned the "mutuality" of AOII. We learned that the commitment and loyalty we contributed
to AOII would be returned to us many times over through opportunities, support
and friendship.
Our strong heritage makes us committed to AOII's future and to providing even more opportunities to generations of young women. To enable us to fulfil] this commitment, today and tomorrow, we are building a new home for our Fraternity in Brentwood, Tennessee.
Though there are many reasons why a new facility is needed. Because training is so important to develop strong chapters and effective leaders, our goal is to create a facility equipped to provide leadership and personal development for our members. We are also in need of more space to house our various forms of commu- nications and to better support our collegiate and alumnae chapters. Over the past ten years, our membership has grown by approximately 25,000 women.
Priceless artifacts dating back to our founding in 1897, as well as treasures from individ- ual chapters, are an essential part of our Fraternity's histo- ry. However, a large part of
AOII's historic archives are inaccessible to our members because there is not enough space to display these items properly and safely. Our new home will include a climate- controlled and visitor-friendly archival library and museum enabling us to preserve and enjoy our past.
When our current facility was built, the AOII Emporium was only a fraction of its current size. Today, it has become a phenomenal resource for our members. AOII is proud to claim our Emporium as one
of the most outstanding Greek merchandising programs in
the National Panhellenic Conference —firstin per- member sales. Due to the Emporium's continued success, it is bursting at the seams. Without sufficient space, we will be unable to continue meeting this growing demand which generates important revenue for our Fraternity.
Construction of the building is well underway and we are expecting a completion date
of November 2000. The building will be formally dedi- cated on April 21, 2001.
The brick Centennial Walkway will be carefully moved to the new site and become part of a beautifully designed memorial garden. Susan Ward Nally (Alpha Chi) will serve as chairman of this project with assistance from Lisa Fischer Sessions
(Omicron) and
Ann Harsh Linebaugh (Nu Omicron).
To date, the campaign has raised 18% of our $3.5 million goal. It is very simple. If each member of AOII contributes only $50.00, we will meet our goal and have a building that is mortgage free.
Please join us now and make an investment in your future and in the future of coundess other women who will one day share in our bond of sisterhood.
Contributions or gifts to Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity are
not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. However, contributions to the AOII International Campaign made through the AOII Foundation are tax deductible and will be used to help underwrite the educational areas of AOII's new home
It is very

member of AOII contributes
only $5o.oo, we will meet

Notice to Canadian donors
In the Winter '99 To Dragma, the Foundation advised Canadian donors that gifts to the AOII Foundation would qualify for a tax deduction in Canada, due to a recently implemented US-Canada Income Tax treaty. This inlbrmation was publicized based on information provided by the Foundation's attorney, and was affirmed subsequently in writing by that attorney. The Foundation has just learned that this information was only partly accurate and has been advised by its attorney that a Canadian donor must have US income in order to claim a tax deductible gift to a US charity on a Canadian return. This impor- tant stipulation was not present-
in the original information provided by the attorney. If any Canadian donor has concerns about a gift made in the last 12 months, please feel free to con- tact foundation@alphaomicron- pi.org or call the Foundation office at 615-37O0920 ext 30.

AlphaLink now
generates reports
AlphaLink, AOH's new web- based reporting system, has added anotherfeature— reports. Now don't get confused. The term "report" is not the same as it used to be. AOII officers now complete an online "form" and enter data and statistics perti- nent to their chapters. The new reports feature takes that data and turns it into a "report" that shows how a chapter compares, on say academic performance, to the other AOII chapters.
Such information will be vital to the organization as we con- tinue to build and restructure educational programming for our chapters and our members.

unexpected
chances
by Sherri Burt, Gamma Delta Chapter (U of South Alabama), Human Resource Committee
One night while living in Chesapeake, Virginia I received an unexpected phone call from a woman who said she was an AOII who also was a newly appointed Network Specialist She was looking for some more information about the position. After chat- ting about the position and what it involved, we started talking a M e about ourselves. I found that she had recently moved to Virginia. It was nice to hear from someone that kind of knew what I was currently expe- riencing since we had also recently moved to Virginia with the military only two months prior. From thatfirstphone call and her ini- tiative to break out of her "comfort zone" to talk to someone new and unknown we have built afriendshipthat is precious.
That comfort zone is what keeps us from experiencing the unexpected treasures that AOII holds for us. We are so busy with fami- ly, career, and other outside commitments that sometimes we zoom through life so fast that we miss the opportunities to smell the
roses that lie in our path.
What kind of opportunities, treasures and roses am I talking about? Opportunities offered to everyone who is an AOII are the unexpected chances to be a positive part of other people's lives. The chance to be involved with alum groups, collegiate chap- ters, committees, and individuals offer posi- tive challenges to increase our talents and at the same time our confidence in what we can do and accomplish. As an organization, AOII has the opportunity to positively affect those around us and those we come into contact with. Your money and time are always appreciated whether that is commu- nicated or not but the reward is never the pat on the back It is the hug from some one that you have made a difference to. It is the friendships that you made while you were doing that act of kindness.
The friendships are the reward or the unex- pected treasures that AOII holds for us. The friendship that developed from that unex-
pected phone call is only one of many valu- able relationships that I have made in my volunteer work with AOII No matter what level of friendship these relationships get to, each of us will grow and learn from them.
The roses are the unexpected people you encounter in AOII. I have met so many wonderful, talented, enjoyable women through my work with AOll. It is always an unexpected delight when I receive an email, card, or phone call from someone I have worked with in the past. Crazy, fun, interest- ing, and knowledgeable — these are the women that I find among the roses in my bouquet I have met and gotten to know many women who were experiencing the same life challenges and they have helped me through them I never expected to find my encouragement from my team member in Hawaii, or my director in Louisiana, or my alum group in Virginia but it was refreshing, like a breath of fresh air.. .or was that the fragrance of a rose?
