Gayle Fitzpatrick

Welcome to our second digital edition of To Dragma. In this issue we are highlighting some of our more than 2,200
AOII volunteers. Without our many volunteers we would not be able to work together to advance AOII and provide our
membership with the opportunity to have an exceptional experience.

You will have an opportunity to learn about several of our volunteers in this issue. Their spotlights include some of their
favorite AOII memories and experiences, as well as information about their lives outsides of AOII.

To start this off, I will share some fun facts!

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Alpha Rho (Oregon State U)
Where I currently live: Lake Oswego, Oregon
Occupation: Software Executive at New Relic
My most recent roles in AOII: International President*, Executive Board Vice
President*, AOII Foundation Board Director*, AOII Properties Board Director*, AOII
Foundation Board President

I have had the opportunity for many great experiences as an AOII alumna. Having
moved several times from Oregon to California, to New Jersey and now back to
Oregon, the first thing I would do in a new place was seek local AOIIs. There is
always a new AOII friend to be found. I also cherish time that I can spend with
my Alpha Rho sisters. One of my favorite activities is attending our class reunion
weekend. We have been getting together the first weekend in October on even
years for the past 30 years. It is a great weekend of sisterhood, laughter, sharing life
stories, and most of all—fun! The power of AOII friendship can be found with your
chapter sisters and new friends throughout your life.

When I am not working or traveling for AOII, I like to spend my time in the Portland area with family and friends. I am a huge
sports fan, so I enjoy spending time outdoors participating in running events, or as a spectator watching my favorite teams.
My love of sports started when I was 10 years old. The sports page is my favorite section in the newspaper, and now I get
sports news 24/7 via ESPN! In the early ‘80s, I created my bucket list of sporting events to attend. Here is what is crossed
off my list: Super Bowl (Steelers vs. Packers), NBA Finals (Lakers vs. Pistons), World Series (Dodgers vs. A’s), Stanley Cup Final
(Rangers vs. Canucks), Wimbledon, US Open Tennis, The Masters, US Open Golf, Rose Bowl, Summer Olympics (Los Angeles
and Atlanta), Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City), Cubs Game at Wrigley Field, Old Yankee Stadium, Red Sox at Fenway Park, Final
Four (men’s and women’s), MLB All-Star Game, Notre Dame football game, New York City Marathon (as a participant!), and
the NFL Pro Bowl.

Here is what is still on my list: Tennis – Australian Open and French Open, Indy 500, Kentucky Derby, World Cup soccer, British
Open, Rose Bowl (when my Oregon State Beavers are playing), Ryder Cup, Tour de France, and the Calgary Stampede.

I hope that you enjoy learning a little about some of our fabulous volunteers in this edition of To Dragma! And to all of our
volunteers, I would like to THANK YOU for your time and talent that you give to our beloved AOII.

Fraternally,

Gayle Fitzpatrick, Alpha Rho (Oregon State U) * current role
AOII International President

8| Volunteer Edition 2017

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Epsilon Omega (Eastern Kentucky U) Allison Allgier

Where you currently live: Cincinnati, Ohio

Occupation: Clinical Program Manager, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

Most recent roles in AOII: Past International President*, Executive Board Vice President*,
International President

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself about the
experience ahead of you as an AOII?
As a new member at Epsilon Omega, they had us write a letter to ourselves that was then
returned when we became alumnae. At the time, I wrote something along the lines of
“you will get out of it what you put into it” and “be open to the experiences that present
themselves.” At that time, I never would have imagined being Chapter President, a lifetime
AOII volunteer or International President. The values of our wonderful organization aligned
so well with my own and strengthened my desire to serve. I think if we serve for
the right reason and are open to new experiences, opportunities for larger service
present themselves naturally.

Something people may not know…
After graduating and working a few years, two AOII friends and I decided to quit
our jobs and backpack in Australia and New Zealand. We saved for a year and then
headed to New Zealand the day after Christmas in 1996. We started on the south
island and moved our way up before flying to Australia. We traveled together
and then also had time apart as we made our way up the coast so it was warm
the entire time we traveled. A highlight was being certified for scuba diving on
the Great Barrier Reef! After the adventure, I decided to move to Virginia Beach
to continue my time by the ocean. This is where I reconnected with AOII through involvement in the alumnae chapter,
alumnae Panhellenic, and became a recruitment network specialist. Having courage and moving outside of my comfort zone
definitely paid off with wonderful memories and a strengthened skill-set from which to grow.

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Pi Kappa (U of Texas at Austin) Ginger Banks

Where you currently live: Austin, Texas 9

Occupation: Retired from the State Bar of Texas -- Communications
Professional

Most recent roles in AOII: RT&J Committee Chairman*; Editor,
Celebrate the Century (AOII’s centennial history book), International
President

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell
yourself about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
Being a collegiate member of AOII is the beginning. Say “yes” to
opportunities to serve AOII. It’s not often you can find endeavors that
are enjoyable, but also allow you to contribute. Serving AOII is not
only fulfilling, the experiences will help you grow and will benefit you
personally and professionally throughout your life. Also, the closest
friends you’ll have will be AOIIs you meet AFTER you leave college.
You’ll gain those friends and experiences only if you stay involved in
AOII as an alumna.

What is something we may not know about you?
One of my loves is musical theatre, which started when I was child.
When we were on a family vacation in New York City we saw “The
Music Man” with Robert Preston and “My Fair Lady” with Rex Harrison
and Julie Andrews. I’ve been hooked ever since. During high school,
I was in a group that produced two musicals a year. They couldn’t
have had a show without me. I was always on the paint or stage
crew. If I could, I’d go to a musical theatre production every day. If I
did that, I’d be very happy, but very broke!

Julie Csizmadia Bishop Collegiate chapter of initiation: Gamma Theta (U of South
Florida)

Where you currently live: Apollo Beach, Florida

Occupation: Controller, CPA

Most recent roles in AOII: AOII Properties Board President
Director*, Gamma Theta Corporation Board President

What are some of your fondest memories as an alumna?
There are two memorable moments that immediately
come to mind! The first alumna memory was having the
privilege to serve as the Gamma Theta Corporation Board
President as our new home was opened in Greek Village
at the University of South Florida. Years of planning, hours
of meetings finally coming to fruition as we watched the
letters go up on the house and 28 women and numerous
parents moving personal belongings into our new House will forever be ingrained. The second memorable
moment occurred at the Gamma Theta 25th Anniversary party when one of my fellow event chairs went
into labor moments before our Keynote speaker Peg Crawford was about to take the stage. Nothing like
walking outside the room door to see a sister leaning against the wall saying, “I think I need to go to the
hospital!” We have repeated this story for years and I think Peg has as well.

Fun fact: I have always been somewhat of a thrill seeker. Over the years, I have tackled Class V white water
rapids on different rivers, gone bungee jumping, zip lined at various locations, hand glided off mountains
and most recently jumped out of a perfectly good plane! There is only one sport that holds no appeal and
that is scuba diving. Perhaps it is the belief that once you enter the water, you enter the food chain!

Susan Bonifield Collegiate chapter of initiation: Nu Beta (U of Mississippi)

Where you currently live: Durham, North Carolina

Occupation: Associate Dean, Finance & Administration; Pratt School of Engineering;
Duke University

Most recent roles in AOII: Executive Board Vice President-Finance*, Properties Board
Treasurer, Network Director

What is your fondest collegiate or alumnae AOII memory?
Anyone who has ever served as a CA knows that it is both the hardest and the best
job in AOII! Recently, I was fortunate enough to have dinner with many of the women

I had advised as CA several years ago. My heart was full after hearing about
the amazing lives these women were living and how their AOII experiences
had helped to mold them in so many ways. I was so proud of them!

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event
you have attended or planned?
As a Chapter Consultant, I had the pleasure of visiting our Gamma Chapter
at the University of Maine. Growing up in Missouri (not exactly beach front
property), I had never had the pleasure of eating lobster fresh from the sea.
So they decided to hold a sisterhood event to teach me how to cook and
eat lobster. They even gave me a live lobster to take home with me when I
left the following day!

10| Volunteer Edition 2017

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Chi Delta (U of Colorado – Boulder) Lacey Bowman

Where you currently live: Bethesda, Maryland

Occupation: Accountant

Most recent roles in AOII: Properties Board Director*, Foundation Board
Finance Committee Member, Nominating Trustee

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself
about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
AOII will give you the opportunity to develop skills that you won’t learn
in school or your profession. Through AOII, I’ve had the opportunity to be
an event planner, a marketer, a writer and a fundraiser. I use recruitment
conversation skills almost every day, and chapter budgeting skills can carry
over into your personal life.

What is something we don’t know about you?
I’ve lived in a lot of different places, though I’ll probably always be a New
Englander at heart, due to my love of Dunkin’ Donuts, Rob Gronkowski
and lobster rolls. I’m on a quest to visit all 50 states (airports don’t count!)
and should reach that milestone in the next few years. Anyone have
recommendations for the Dakotas? Finally, I love to bake and make a mean
chocolate chip cookie.

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Linda Peters Collier
Chi Omicron (U of Central Oklahoma)

Where you currently live: Fairfax, Virginia

Occupation: Retired Human Resource Manager

Most recent roles in AOII: Nominating Trustee
Committee, AOII Properties Director, AOII NPC 1st
Alternate Delegate, Past International President*

What is your fondest AOII memory as a
collegiate member?
We were a very small chapter, but very close in
friendships and active on campus. I remember
taking road trips to the University of Kansas and the
University of Texas to visit the AOII chapters. It was
fun meeting other AOIIs and experiencing the larger
picture of AOII.

Fun fact: My husband and I love to travel and we are slowly checking places off our bucket list. We have visited all 50 of
the United States and now we are working on the world! We have visited several countries in Europe and love Italy and
Germany, but our favorite trip so far was to Australia. It was wonderful to see the world-famous Opera House in Sydney
and the Australia Open Tennis venue in Melbourne. We were also able to go into the Australian Outback to Ayers Rock
and then experience snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef—such a memorable trip. Next will be trips to Peru and the
South Pacific.

Crystal Grafton Combs Collegiate chapter of initiation: Nu Beta (U of Mississippi)

Amber Williams Countis Where do you currently live? Picayune, Mississippi

Occupation: Managing Officer of Picayune General Dentistry, Inc. & Growing Smiles
of Picayune, PLLC

Most recent roles in AOII: Executive Board Vice President*, Foundation Board
President, Foundation Board Treasurer

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself about
the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
I would tell myself to remember to breathe, to enjoy every moment and to take more
pictures! I never want to forget all of the amazing moments that I have experienced
as a member of Alpha Omicron Pi – from the day I received my bid until today. I think
sometimes about how amazing it would have been to capture moments like when
I was seated at the feet of Mary Louise Roller during our Centennial Convention
listening as she told stories of AOII or when I received the Stella George Stern Perry
Award dressed in overalls (which were very trendy at the time)! We didn’t live in a
world filled with selfies and social media; but, oh, how I wish we had!

Share something we don’t know about you.
I believe that a cupcake is the perfect food! When my son was diagnosed with a
food allergy to tree nuts at only 18 months old, it became a challenge for us to find
bakeries that did not use nuts as a primary ingredient. When I opted for a gluten-free
diet a few years later, it made things even more interesting. It was then that I decided
to really try my hand at baking. To say that there has been more than one batch that
didn’t make it on our plates is a bit of an understatement! And while my signature
recipe is actually a Chocolate Chip Malted Milk Ball Cookie, it tastes better on top of a
cupcake! They are delicious bites of goodness topped with icing and all things that
pop, sparkle, crunch and crumble. What’s not to love?!

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Pi (Tulane U)

Where you currently live: Northfield, Vermont

Occupation: Director of Advancement Services and Research, Norwich University

Most recent roles in AOII: Executive Board Vice President*, Network Director,
Collegiate Network Director

Favorite AOII memory?
In early January 2017, I had the honor of speaking at the Delaware Alumnae
Chapter’s 15th Anniversary and Founders’ Day. The next day we traveled to New
Jersey and attended the Northern New Jersey Alumnae Chapter’s Founders’ Day.
After finishing up the NNJAC event, several of us had the special opportunity to
go down the road to nearby Bloomfield, New Jersey, and stop at the Bloomfield
Cemetery. It was a beautiful scene with the ground covered in fresh snow from
the day before. Our group walked a little way until we found the Wyman family
tomb. After brushing off some snow, we were able to see the final resting place
of one of the AOII Founders, Elizabeth “Bess” Heywood Wyman. It was such an
emotional and special moment to pay our respects after a weekend filled with
sisterhood and commemorating this woman and her three best friends who
started it all 120 years ago—definitely a highlight of my AOII journey!

How do you like to spend your free time?
My favorite place to visit is New York City! I love seeing Broadway musicals and
spending time exploring the Big Apple. I was fortunate to see 12 Broadway shows
(a personal record) in 2016 including Hamilton with all of the original Broadway
cast which more than exceeded my expectations! If you are looking for someone
to see a show with, give me a call! It’s my favorite thing!

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Iota (U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) Margaret “Peg” Crawford
Where you currently live: Glen Ellyn, Illinois
Occupation: Retired from a medical research team at the University of Chicago
Most recent roles in AOII: Past International President*, Executive Board Vice President,
Alumnae Chapter member, Perry Award Committee member, International President

What did you hope for as a new member of AOII?
When I became a new member, I was anticipating a wonderful comradery—friendship with
wonderful young women who would guide me into my endeavors in college.

What is one of your fondest memories as an AOII alumna?
My very first convention when I was Chapter President at Iota. I just had a fantastic time and

it was an eye-opening experience of knowing what a fabulous
organization we had. I think I’ve been to 30 Conventions since then.

How do you like to spend your time?
Playing bridge! I like to travel. I love Arizona this time of year and I
have a summer cottage in Michigan and I’m there all summer from
June until September. I like to keep very active. I do water aerobics
every morning and I like to stay involved in my community. I
belong to a local woman’s club and my alumnae chapter. I’m just
one of these people that likes to do a lot of things a lot of times.

Fun fact: Dick van Dyke was a high school class mate.

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Phi Upsilon (Purdue U)
Where you currently live: Dallas, Texas
Occupation: Head of Human Resources for Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc.
Most recent roles in AOII: Executive Board Vice President*, Past International President*, International President

One of your fondest AOII memories? Susan Danko
As an alumna I would say one of my fondest memories is serving on re/colonization teams. I have had the
pleasure of serving on many teams and a couple come to mind that have very special meaning they are the
recolonizations of Beta Phi Chapter at Indiana University--my sister’s and niece’s chapter, Phi Upsilon chapter at

Purdue University--my collegiate chapter and Alpha
Chapter at Columbia University. I smile every time I
recall these experiences and the sisters who I shared
an incredible experience with!

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood 13
or philanthropy event you have attended or
planned?
In college one of our philanthropic projects was
Singing Valentines. On Valentine’s Day we would
split up into groups of four to call individuals on
Valentine’s Day and sing one of the songs selected
for them! I am not a singer by any means so it was
great to be part of a team singing! We had so
much fun promoting and delivering the
Valentine’s messages!

Andrea Dill Collegiate chapter of initiation: Chi Psi (Cal Poly State U, San Luis Obispo)
Where you currently live: Redlands, California and Aspen, Colorado
Judy Gambrel Flessner Occupation: Grant Writer/Fundraiser
Most recent roles in AOII: Foundation Board Director*, Scholarship Committee Chair, Scholarship Committee Member

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to spend your time?
I am active and enjoy being outdoors! To work out, I do Crossfit, usually three days a week. I spend part of my time in Colorado
and part of my time in California. When I am in California, I play golf and work in my garden. When I am in Colorado, I hike
and bike.

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
Being a new member is just the beginning of your AOII journey. Deciding to become an AOII is one of the most important

decisions you have made. There will be so much to learn and
experience with AOII. Enjoy the friends and the sisterhood,
the friends you are making will be part of your life for years
to come. You will learn many valuable life skills with AOII,
working as a team, leading a meeting, introducing myself to
new people and public speaking.

Fun fact: My first car was a 1967 Ford Mustang, I got it when
I was in high school and never had the heart to sell it. In the
past year, my dad and I have been making some repairs. We
have replaced the upholstery, repaired the air conditioning
and had some mechanical repairs that keep it running well.
It has been fun for me to be able to drive the Mustang again
and to have a project to share with my dad!

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Iota (U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
Where you currently live: Oak Park, California
Occupation: CPA
Most recent roles in AOII: Foundation Board Treasurer* and Director*,
International Committee Chair, Alumnae Network Specialist

What is one of your fondest AOII memories?
I have so many fond memories from my years so far as an alumna member of
AOII. I have been truly blessed to have so many wonderful sisters and really good
friends within AOII, most of whom I have met after college and as I have moved
to different areas of the country. They have been with me through thick and
thin. One of my real joys is that now I get to share AOII with my daughter, Laura,
who is also an AOII alumna member. We will be sharing our 4th convention
together this summer.

Share with us one of your favorite pasttimes.
I truly love to travel with my husband and family, and with friends. When I was
young, I had the opportunity to travel with my parents almost every year, most
of the time by car to many of the states in our country. I got the travel bug. Now,
I have been fortunate to be able in the past few years to cross many of the places
in Europe off my bucket list, but the bucket still has quite a few destinations left
to see. I have also had the opportunity to reconnect with three of my closest Iota
sisters from college. For the past four plus years, we have taken a trip together at
least once per year, and this spring’s trip is to Nashville. I can’t wait!

14| Volunteer Edition 2017

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Theta (DePauw U) Ann McClanahan Gilchrist

Where you currently live: Indianapolis, Indiana

Occupation: Part-time at The Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda

Most recent roles in AOII: Chair of Fraternity Development
Committee, International President, Past International President*

What has been your fondest AOII memory?
This would, of course, have to be serving as International President
at the time of our Centennial Celebration. It was such an honor to
carry the banner for the Fraternity at the Opening Banquet. Having
my pledge class president in attendance for the Opening Ritual
was icing on the cake.

What is something we do not know about you?
Not only did I meet my husband through AOII, it was a gateway
to my paid fraternal experience. My husband became Executive
Director of his fraternity in 1985 and I joined staff in 1986.
Ultimately, I served as Director of Chapter Services for 28 years
retiring in 2014. Since that time I have been called back into
service on a part-time basis. I have been fortunate to meet
many interfraternal associates through the years and I believe
my contacts have been helpful to both AOII and AKL. When my
husband received the NIC Gold medal, it was a proud
moment to see not only his fraternity brothers congratulating
him, but also the several NPC board members in attendance. The
interfraternal community is an impressive group.

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Nu Iota (Northern Illinois U) Linda Grandolfo

Where you currently live: Gurnee, Illinois

Occupation: Retired Teacher of Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Children

Most recent roles in AOII: AOII Foundation Board-Secretary*,
Executive Board Vice President, Network Director

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member
and your fondest memory as an alumnae member?
My fondest memory as a collegiate member was our amazing
sisterhood. We had so much fun in our chapter house, we saw
each other every day on campus, we studied together and 45
years later a group of us are still very close friends. My fondest
memory as an alumnae member was serving on both the AOII
Executive Board and the AOII Foundation Board. Receiving the
Helen St. Clair Mullan Award at the 2013 Convention in Chicago
with so many sisters and friends in attendance will always be a
highlight for me.

What is something we do not know about you?
As a former teacher of the deaf, I am fluent in sign language
and I continue to work part time with children with significant
autism. Twice a year, I assist in a large conference for individuals
in the school bus industry. We employ local AOIIs to work at the
conference in Reno, Nevada and Frisco, Texas.

15

Grace Houston Collegiate chapter of initiation: Lambda Tau (U of Louisiana at Monroe)
Where you currently live: Monroe, Louisiana
Barbara Daugs Hunt Occupation: Retired College Professor and Administrator
Most recent roles in AOII: Executive Board Vice President*, Network Specialist-Finance,
Financial Adviser and Monroe Alumnae Chapter President (during the same time)

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to spend
your time?
My other activities include service to my church, serving as the community member for
the Institutional Review Board at the University of Louisiana Monroe (I am in the middle of
a four-year appointment), serving as a volunteer to our community theatre and appearing
in several plays, and taking piano lessons. I have wanted to play the piano since I was 12
and now I can.

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself about the
experience ahead of you as an AOII?
I have said this to New Members on numerous occasions: “Baby, you ain’t seen nothing
yet!” I have been a member of AOII for almost 55 years, and each experience has molded
me into the woman that I am. AOII is not always pearls, roses and rubies. There are a few
thorns along the way. Fortunately, the thorns help us appreciate the many pearls, roses
and rubies.

Fun fact: Something that may surprise you about me is that I am Mrs. Claus at our local
children’s museum during the Christmas holiday. While there, I walk around talking to
the children and getting my photo taken with them. I also read a Christmas story to the
children. We generally have three large groups of preschoolers--100 or so--who come for
a holiday field trip.

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Phi Delta (U of Wisconsin, Milwaukee)
Where you currently live: Cedarburg, Wisconsin
Occupation: Retired Volunteer
Most recent roles in AOII: Past International President*, Executive Board Vice President, Chair of the Foundation
Governance Committee, Chair of the Fraternity Perry Award Committee, Fraternity and Foundation Nominating
Committees, International President

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell
yourself about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
As a new member, you experience instant
sisterhood, friendship, surrounded by AOIIs
who care about you, are there for you and
share fun activities with each other. You have
a community surrounding you for the rest of
your life. This is the wonderful, lifelong gift you
receive from joining AOII.

How do you spend your free time?
I volunteer at the county crisis line once a
week. Listen to callers who are lonely, sad,
emotionally ill and very troubled. It makes
one realize how fortunate we are in our own
lives. Lastly, enjoying and being with my eight
grandchildren is the joy of my life, and I find
time to be there for them as often as I can... And
I have attended a lot of basketball games in the
last 10 years!

Collegiate chapter of Kathy Jensen

(Northern Arizona U) Carole Jurenko Jones
Where you currently live:
Prescott, Arizona
Occupation: Retired
Most recent roles in AOII:
AOII Foundation Board
Director*, Executive Board
Director, Alumnae Network
Director

What is one of your
fondest AOII memories?
As an alumna, my fondest memory is having the privilege of personally initiating my bonus daughter (we don’t use the “step”
word!) into AOII. My attendance was kept a complete surprise. In that candlelit room when she stepped forward and realized it
was me, it was the most magical moment ever. There was not a dry eye in the room, including mine. Sisters together, forever
we will be.

What is something we do not know about you?
I love cooking healthy and make a mean Spanish Chicken Stew and Turkey Chili. I’m studying now to become a Reiki Master
Trainer, following in the footsteps of my husband. I crossed two things off my bucket list recently: I flew an airplane in a flight
simulator at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and went Zip Lining in Maui! I’d love to do more of both.

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Alpha Delta (U of Alabama)
Where you currently live: Madison, Alabama
Most recent roles in AOII: Past International President*, NPC Delegate*,
International President, Executive Board Director of Programming

What is your fondest AOII memory as an alumna?
My fondest memory as an alumna member is attending Bid Day at the
University of Alabama when my daughter pledged AOII and her initiation as a
member of Alpha Omicron Pi.

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to
spend your time?
I serve as a board member of the Madison Hospital and the Huntsville
Museum of Art. Additionally, I love to go on ski and beach vacations! My
husband and I were fortunate to celebrate our 30th anniversary by taking a
cruise to the French Polynesia. Truly a once in a lifetime experience!

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself
about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
That the words you hear as a new member, “AOII for a lifetime,” really are
true. Being a member of AOII truly extended beyond my college days. While I
continue to enjoy the special bond that exists between my Alpha Delta sisters,
I have also developed special relationships with sisters who span generations
and come from varying chapters and geographical locations.

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself
about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
You will meet the most incredible women if you volunteer for AOII.

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to
spend your time?
I volunteer in my community working with children that are temporarily
homeless and living in transitional housing with their parents. I also volunteer

with an organization that rescues food from grocery stores.

Share something about yourself we may not know.
In 2008, we traveled to Chile for Christmas and went to Easter
Island--one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. It was
definitely a once in a life-time experience. I enjoy cooking and am a
die-hard fan of Pure Barre, attending five times a week when I’m
not traveling.

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event you
have attended or planned?
Mulling over the countless memories I have made with my sisters, it was difficult
to pick one. The winning memory, though, is a sisterhood event that occurred
three years ago. It was the celebration of our 20th reunion of having traveled as
Chapter Consultants (CC). We traveled prior to the invention of social media, so
all nine of us had tried to stay in touch over the years. As our 20th reunion
approached, we all found each other via Facebook and planned to meet for a
few days in the spring of 2014. The bonds of friendship that we forged through
AOII were as strong as ever, 20 years later. Our three-day weekend was effortless
and we picked up right where we left off as young women ready to face the
world, in late spring of 1994. That weekend was the epitome of what we mean
by the power of friendship in AOII as we caught up on 20 years of marriage,
divorce, children, careers and even planning career changes. In the midst of one
of our evening conversations after dinner, I was transported to one of the many
evenings we sat and talked at Headquarters, when we were those young college
graduates in our early 20s.

Fun fact: One unique nugget about me is the fact that I learned to speak Spanish from my
grandmother. Knowing this second language has been such a cherished blessing, carrying
with me a part of my family history and culture.

What is one of your favorite memories as an
alumnae?
Conducting Ritual for Kappa Phi’s 75th anniversary with
so many collegians and alumnae from afar.
I remember in living detail the evening the Montreal
Alumnae Chapter went to a shelter for homeless men
and served supper and talked with them as individuals.

Share something unique about yourself.
I was an avid curler from 1982 until 2013. I was a
competitive curler from 1990 until 1996. Twice
our team became the Provincial champions and
represented Quebec at the Canadian Championship.
We learned after our first time at “the nationals” that
our stamina needed a huge boost if we were to
succeed. There were 11 games (each 2 1/2 to 3 hours
long) within 6 days, then the play-offs. I think I became
stronger and more flexible in those years than I was at
any other time in my life!

Collegiate chapter of initiation: Phi Chi (U of Chicago)
Where you currently live: Boston, Massachusetts
Occupation: Administrative Director, Mass General Hospital Cancer Network
Most recent roles in AOII: AOII Foundation Board President*, AOII
Foundation Treasurer, AOII Foundation Director

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and your
fondest memory as an alumnae member?
My fondest – and probably most nerve-wracking – memory as an alumna
is serving on the presentation team for the opportunity to re-colonize our
Alpha Chapter at Columbia/Barnard. The team’s nervous energy was palpable
and I think we all felt the weight of our Founders and all of our sisters on our
shoulders as we described the wonder of Alpha Omicron Pi to the Panhellenic

women on that campus. After we received the invite to
re-colonize, I was also able to serve as a member of the
colonization team and attended the re-installation. There
were tears in all of our eyes as Allison Allgier performed the
Ritual – it is not something I will ever forget.

What is something we do not know about you?
I am fluent in Spanish – I usually read about 8-10 books a
month, and I try to make at least 2 of them in Spanish so
I can stay sharp with my language and comprehension skills.

Cindy Swartzfager Visot Occupation: Retired Corporate Communications and

What is one of your fondest AOII memories
as an alumna?
Alumnae: mentoring young AOIIs, both at the collegiate
level and through the Young Alumnae Council. I am
honored to watch them grow and become incredibly
talented women.

What has been your favorite philanthropy event?
I think it is the new philanthropy that Omega (Miamu U) has begun called “Rock on Omicron” to support arthritis. This event
features all six of Miami University’s a cappella groups, which are incredibly popular on campus. I like this event because it is
fresh, it involves non-Greek organizations, it appeals to the entire community and it raises awareness for arthritis.

How do you like to spend your free time?
Now that I am retired, I am pursuing art and volunteerism. I am a quilter and have been working with numerous quilt artists
to learn from them as I develop my own point of view. I have also begun working in glass—a much more unpredictable
medium than fabric! Volunteer-wise, I work with children in a kindergarten class, providing hands on learning opportunities
about science, different cultures and languages; I volunteer at a children’s hospital in the sewing room, where we make
everything from NICU mittens and quilts to covers for equipment, and my golden doodle Jazz and I are in training to
volunteer in children’s dog therapy program. I also have started training for half-marathons. I have completed two so far and
one upcoming in May!

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and your
fondest memory as an alumnae member?
Accepting on behalf of the AOII Foundation, the Floyd B. Odlum Making
a Difference Award at the National Arthritis Foundation Conference
in Beverly Hills, California. The award was in recognition of AOII’s
philanthropic work.

Share something about yourself we may not know.
I am fortunate to travel internationally with my job as well as socially with
my husband. Visiting the Great Wall of China was probably one of the
greatest highlights of my travels as well as visiting Jerusalem and Old City
sites such as the Western Wall and Church of the Holy Sepulchre. One
provided a spiritual journey for me as my Dad had passed away two weeks
before my travels to Israel. The other provided the opportunity to visit one
of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or
philanthropy event you have attended or planned?
I really enjoyed going to a Phillies baseball game as part
of AOII’s Strike Out Arthritis! program. It’s always fun
to enjoy a baseball game with sisters and support our
philanthropy at the same time.

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to spend your time?
I love to travel and have been lucky enough to visit many amazing places including Africa, Egypt and the Galapagos
Islands. When I am not traveling out of the country you will find me at the beach, reading a book while enjoying the
sun (from under an umbrella) and the waves.

Fun fact: I don’t spend much time in the kitchen during the year, but all bets are off at Christmas time. I bake 8 different
kinds of cookies in the 2 weeks prior to Christmas resulting in about 90 dozen cookies. The recipes are a mix of old
family traditions and new favorites and the cookies are shared with friends, family and co-workers. My co-workers mark
their calendars for “cookie day” and try to beat the rush to make sure they get their favorites before they are all gone.

Most recent roles in AOII: Executive Board Vice President*, AOII Foundation Board

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event you have
attended or planned?
It’s a tie! I really enjoyed attending the New Orleans Alumnae Founders Day event in 2016
because it was also the centennial celebration of that chapter and allowed me to return
to my former hometown, where I reunited with a dear friend from high school who is also
an AOII. But I also loved being part of the celebration of Chicago West Suburban’s 75th
anniversary celebration, because so many sisters who have touched my life were there,

and I got to sit next to a former alumnae chapter president who was in her
90s and had so much history to share!

What are some interesting facts about yourself?
When I was a baby, my father photographed my silhouette against a
bright window. It received an honorable mention in Life Magazine’s
annual photography contest. That photo represents for me all the unique
opportunities I have been blessed with all my life.

I am fluent in Chinese because of my parents’ commitment to speaking it
at home and sending me to classes for years. I adore the symphony
because my parents played classical music at home and made sure I took
violin, viola and piano lessons. I am a huge figure skating fan because my dad and I liked watching the competitions together
when I was little. Years later, I traveled to the U.S. Nationals in several different cities with fellow fans! My name in Chinese
means “loyal with many friends.” I believe AOII was truly meant to be for someone like me!

What is your fondest memory as an alumna?
My forever fondest memory is having my daughter, Jennifer Williams
Jensen, pledge AOII at Theta Chapter (DePauw U). It was so much fun to
visit her and just be “Jen’s Mom.” I cried all the way through her initiation.
Having your daughter become an AOII is the most special experience
ever! Also, memorable was the association with my sisters during the
years we were a team in old Region IV, the years on the XB, the years
when we created the AOII 100 Year History Book, and my time with
CIRC – the spirit of dedication and cooperation to make AOII a positive
experience and special for its members throughout.

What don’t we know about you?
I started drawing as soon as I could hold a pencil and really have never quit. I loved horses and had my first pony
at 3 and rode for many years. I still love horses, but don’t tell my cats, because I love them also.

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to spend your time?

Occupation: Banking Executive Anne Smith Jones
Most recent roles in AOII: Past International President*, Vice President of Finance,
International President, Assistant Historian, 23

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event you have
attended?
I enjoy doing the Jingle Bell Run in Franklin each year. I love seeing all of the AOII t-shirts
and everyone dressed in holiday attire. One year, I was in particularly good shape and ran
the entire course by myself. As I was making the turn-around, several collegiate members
ran by and waived at me and one said, “I just love seeing the older alums out here!” I had
to chuckle because I sure didn’t feel that old and I was AHEAD of her in the run!

What are some things we do not know about you?
I am a CPA and banking executive, been married for almost 37 years, and
raised two sons. I am in the middle of starting my second bank in Nashville,
Tennessee, deciding to do it again last summer after the bank I help start
in 2007 was sold in mid-2016. Not yet ready to retire, I found another
opportunity to use my skills and experience in the banking business and
keep myself busy. Since becoming an empty nester, I’ve enjoyed riding
with my husband on our Harley Davidson motorcycle, singing in a country
band started by my previous employer, traveling and learning about wine.
In 2016, I took three cruises, traveled to the coast of Spain, and bought a
“Floating Home” named Liquid Assets on Norris Lake, just north of Knoxville,
Tennessee. My sons (28 and 25) are still single and I’m waiting for them to
meet the woman of their dreams and mine, especially if she’s an AOII.

Occupation: Recently retired from Eastern Kentucky University
Most recent roles in AOII: Chapter Adviser for Epsilon Omega
(Eastern Kentucky U), Recruitment Adviser

What has been one of your favorite AOII siterhood or
philanthropy events?
I loved attending LipSync that the women of Epsilon Omega
host every year. It started in 1992 and is the largest philanthropy
event on campus. It is such fun to see the chapter work
together as well as see participation from most every Greek
group on campus. It is always a sell-out crowd and raises much
money for the Arthritis Foundation.

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself about the experience ahead of
you as an AOII?
I would tell myself not to expect to be finished with AOII at graduation, which is what I thought in 1973 when I
graduated. I moved away from my collegiate chapter so I had no interest in being involved with any other
chapter. No chapter could ever compare to mine. But, the most wonderful thing happened: I was asked to
advise at Epsilon Omega. It had been 25 years since I had graduated so I decided to give it a try. I absolutely
fell in love with this chapter! They welcomed me, and I embarked on this fabulous journey with them that has
lasted almost 20 years. I have learned from them, had fun with them, and above all loved them. So, to my young
self, I would say, “You truly have to bloom where you are planted, even if it takes a while to realize it.”

As an alumnae member, it was the moment I received a completely

I had been living in Rhode Island for 15 years but had not

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member
and your fondest memory as an alumnae member?
There are so many to choose from! While hard and tiring at the
time, I look back at our weeks of recruitment as such a bonding
time. We all grew so much closer together through those long
hours, had lots of laughs and ate a lot of junk food. Of course,
we all got sick after spending all that time together with no
sleep in the middle of January! As an alumnae member, I have
really loved being able to attend Convention. I never had the
opportunity to go as a collegian and it is fun to get wrapped up
in all the excitement. I am constantly amazed at how relevant
the Fraternity and my sisters remain to me through the years.

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would
you tell yourself about the experience ahead of you as an
AOII?
Being a member of AOII has truly shaped the woman I am
today. I was a fairly insecure young woman when I joined.
My membership and the women I have become friends with
helped me to gain confidence, to understand what I have to
offer to relationships, and the knowledge that I can be a great
leader when I put my whole heart into it. I would tell myself,
“Buckle Up! You are in for an amazing ride!”

Share something about yourself we do not know.
Before our children were born, my husband and I traveled to Italy for two weeks. We knew no Italian and
very little about traveling abroad. We visited Venice, Florence, Sienna, Orvieto and Rome. We traveled
through the country by train. We ate the most amazing food. We toured some of the most beautiful
buildings. The inn keeper of our bed and breakfast in Florence had a baby while we were staying there. We
climbed to the top of the Duomo in Florence. We attended mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica. It was an amazing
trip, and I look forward to going back some day.

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member?
As a collegiate, my grand-little, was diagnosed with Lymphoma during her
new member period. It was really earth shattering for all of us. In order to bring
awareness to her cancer battle, and for all of those members in the Greek
community who knew of someone battling cancer, I organized a candlelight
ceremony in our backyard to help honor those who were fighting the disease and
to those who lost their battle. We invited all members of the Greek community to
share names they’d like read during the ceremony and invited all members of the
community to pile into our yard to comfort and reassure each other. It was a special
night and while our sister lost her battle with cancer a few years ago, I know that
she knew how much we all loved her. AOII brought us all together to support one
another.

What is somthing we do not know about you?
My hubby and I honeymooned in Tahiti. We stayed in a hut over the water and
swam with sharks and rays and made our own Poisson Cru (like a ceviche). We hiked
to the center of the island and swam in fresh water rivers. We met amazing people
who taught us about the French Polynesian culture. We can’t wait to go back for our
10-year anniversary!

What is one of your fondest AOII memories?
My fondest alumnae memory came at a very dark time for my family. When my
husband fell ill with cancer, it was my AOII sisters who filled in where my family
was unable. I don’t always recall getting back and forth from the hospital, but
I do recall it was an AOII sister who did the driving, and it was an AOII sister
who brought me hot chocolate and lunch during the long hours before and
after his surgery. It was my sisters, near and far, who sent not only notes of
encouragement to me, but they sent notes and tokens of support directly to
my husband and my children. My family was wonderful and took care of my
kids, my AOII sisters were amazing and took care of me. I will never forget my
sister in law pulling me aside and saying “I get it now, I get why you love your
AOII so much. These women are amazing!” I will never forget the feeling of
sisterhood and love that carried me through some of the hardest times of my
life.

Fun fact: I have been sky diving, it was the most exhilarating experience!
There is nothing at all like the feeling of jumping from the plane knowing you will be safe. It reminds me of taking that
leap of faith when facing a new challenge, sometimes you have to just take a deep breath and jump knowing that it
will be okay in the end. I apply that same approach to much more in my life now, I just jump!

What is your fondest AOII memory as an alumna?
The alumnae memory that is freshest in my mind was a
road trip I took last month with two of my Phi Chi sisters to
another sister’s memorial service. We were sad, of course,
and we spent lots of time reminiscing about her; but we
were also happy and relieved to be together, and spent
hours catching up on the years that had passed. The gifts
of sisterhood aren’t always wrapped in a pretty
package, but they are precious every single time.

What is something we do not know about you?
I’m a two-time cancer survivor, and my sisters have
seen me through the ordeal both times. My chapter
sisters, who have been my best friends for 25+ years,
my fellow volunteers, my Chicago West Suburban
sisters, the collegians I’ve worked with, Fraternity and
Foundation staff and Panhellenic friends I’ve made
along the way. I could never thank them enough for
all they’ve done to support me and my family. That
Alpha Love is some strong medicine. Believe it.

Most recent AOII roles: Network Director*, Network Specialist-Leadership,

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event
you have attended or planned?
One of my favorite events is Rho Omicron’s Smoke Out Arthritis! BBQ, which
is held each year on the MTSU campus. It’s amazing to see how this event
has grown every single year. My family even loves attending the barbecue
with me!

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do you like to
spend your time?
I love to travel, whether I’m with my husband and son or on my annual girls’
trip to New Orleans. I also love sports, especially rooting on my MTSU Blue
Raiders!

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell yourself
about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
I would tell myself to enjoy being a collegiate member of AOII and get as
much out of the experience as I possibly can; however, know that the most
fulfilling and enriching years will actually occur after I graduate, and for
many years to come.

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and your fondest memory as an
alumnae member?
My fondest memory as a collegiate member is having weekly dinners with my best friends
who were also my roommates and AOII sisters, of course. Just having the time to be together is
something that is so precious now as an
alumnae member. My fondest memory
as an alumnae member is getting to
participate in Ritual with all of my sisters
at Convention. It’s an amazing and unique
opportunity and demonstrates the tie that
binds us all together.

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and
your fondest memory as an alumnae member?
My fondest memory as a collegiate member was having my mom who
was an AOII be present at my initiation. I was initiated with her badge
and of course will be a moment that I will carry with me always. My

fondest memory as an alumnae member is the love and
support that I received from my sisters when my mother
passed away. I looked up at the visitation and there
were several of my sisters that have driven two hours to
come and be there to support me. It is a memory that I
will cherish forever.

What is something we do not know about you?
I’m really a rather boring person, but I am a huge Disney
nut. I had been to Disneyland and Disney Paris, but
had never made it to Disney World. Finally, in 2010 my
husband took me for a week and it was probably one of
the best vacations of my life!

When you’re not working hard for AOII, how and where do
you like to spend your time?
I love to cook and like to find a good and difficult recipe to take
on for a challenge. One of my best was a Peanut Dacquoise with
Peanut Butter Mousse. It is a layered meringue with chocolate and
peanut butter. Of course, I do not want to have tempting things
sitting around the house, so I will walk up and down our street
knocking on doors to share with my neighbors. I also love to travel,
so planning a good trip is always fun for me.

Picture yourself as a new member again. What would you tell
yourself about the experience ahead of you as an AOII?
I would say that there is no way to anticipate how amazing AOII will be in your life. Welcome the opportunities that
are available to you to be a leader, to be a mentor, or to be a great big sister. I would also tell myself to do whatever I
can to make it to an AOII Convention as a collegiate member.

What is one of your fondest AOII memories?
I will never forget the 2013 International Convention where I was awarded the Adele Hinton Award.

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event you have attended or planned?
A benefit fashion show and luncheon that I planned, which included sisters from Gamma Omicron (U of
Florida), Kappa Gamma (Florida Southern College) and Gamma Theta (U of South Florida).

Fun fact: I spent 30 years
as an Air Force spouse. This
provided me the opportunity
to meet many sisters across
the country. I even had the
opportunity to spend three
years in Newfoundland.
That was an education for
someone who had never
seen snow. My husband
retired from the Air Force
after serving our country for
30 years.

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event you have attended or planned?
This past year, I attended a Philanthropy event at Pi Theta (Florida International U) called Rose Ruck. 2016 was the first

year they held this event, and had
an amazing turnout. They enlisted
the help of their campus ROTC, and
created military style activities for
groups to compete in. It was one of
the most successful events I have
seen in its first year, and I am excited
to see it grow!

When you’re not working hard
for AOII, how and where do you
like to spend your time?
I love to travel and experience new
cultures. I try to do it as often as
possible. I enjoy baking—I find it to
be very relaxing and therapeutic.

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event
you have attended or planned?
Our alumnae chapter hosts a very popular holiday party every year. I love to
attend as not only do I get to see lots of familiar faces but also meet a lot of
new sisters. I love the diversity of our group as we have sisters from all areas
of the country. It is always fun to share experiences many times discovering
sisters that we both know.

Fun fact: Last summer, my husband and I made it to the top of a 14’er.
A 14’er is a mountain with an elevation of 14,000 feet or more and to
successfully have completed the climb, you need to gain at least 3,000 feet
from start to summit. Twice before we had attempted this but weather cut
the climb short. This time with the accompaniment of our oldest son and
young grandson we were thrilled to make it to the top and cross it off our
bucket list!

What are your fondest AOII memories as a collegian?
Some of my favorite memories as a collegian are the road trips we used to take during our spring break. A
few of us would get vehicles and drive night and day to go to visit sisters at chapters far away to meet our
southern sisters and see what life in an American chapter was like. One year we visited our sisters in Tucson

and the following year we went to Long Beach. Road
trip fun! Trust me you get to know your sisters very
well trapped in a car for days on end.

Share something interesting about yourself.
Since moving 10 years ago I am proud to say I have
learned to speak fluent Texan. I know the proper use
of “y’all,” “all y’all” and ‘‘fixin.”’ I know what “see-ment”
(cement) is, as well as “all” (oil) and “mell” (mail). I know
exactly where “over yonder” is and if I say “dadgum” –
look out, I am mad. I will still throw my native tongue
in here and there. Old habits die hard. Don’t be
surprised if I greet you and say; “Howdy, y’all! Howse it
going eh?”

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and your fondest
memory as an alumnae member?
During my collegiate years, preference day was held in the beautiful Biedenharn
Gardens, a botanical garden owned by AOII Ema-Lou Biedenharn. Water was served
from chilled pewter. Fountains danced and flowed. Birds chirped. A quartet harmonized “The Recipe Song.” So
memorable! Collegiate years are few, but alumnae years truly speak “AOII for a Lifetime!” I do not have one fondest
moment but many. My alumnae group is my family. In the past 30 years, we have shared life: Baby showers, newborns,
school events, sports, picnics, graduations, illness, weddings, retirement, relocation and sadly, losing those who mean
the world to us. This is family!

Share something unique about yourself.
I missed my calling as a librarian or media specialist. I can spend hours in a library reading and researching whatever
piques my current interest. As a newlywed, I discovered genealogy and began tracing our family roots years before
Ancestry and DNA analysis were cool. Countless hours have flown by as I discover new family connections both
historical and current day. I love re-connecting the present day sixth and seventh generation cousins through reunions
and Facebook family groups.

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and
your fondest memory as an alumnae member?
It’s hard to pick one! However, here are two very special ones. My
fondest memory of my collegiate years was the day I found out I had
been chosen to be a Chapter Consultant. My chapter sisters were so
happy for me and I was thrilled to broaden my AOII world and start a
new adventure. My fondest memory as an alumna is my most recent
experience at the Beta Phi Centennial celebration. I reconnected
with sisters I hadn’t seen for more than 30 years. We immediately fell
into our old comfortable friendships and celebrated with stories and
remembrances as well as sharing news of our lives today.

Fun fact: I spent part of my childhood as an Air Force dependent (I
hesitate to say “brat!”) I was born in the Philippines and lived in several
US states before ending up in Indiana.

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and
your fondest memory as an alumnae member?
My best memories of my collegiate years are probably sitting in

the stands with all of my sisters at the University of Illinois
football games! We never had a great team while I was
there, but it was so much fun. I especially loved Dads’
Day. My favorite memory so far as an alumna is all of the
wonderful friends I made in the Philadelphia Alumnae
Chapter. My husband and I moved to Philadelphia when his
father was very sick, and I was pregnant, and didn’t know
anyone except his parents and siblings. The Philadelphia AC
welcomed me with open arms – and then put me right to
work! I cherish those sisters.

What is your fondest AOII memory as a collegiate member and your fondest
memory as an alumnae member?
As a collegian, it was driving down to Boise, Idaho for my first AOII leadership event
at the (last) Region IX meeting in 1995. As an alumna, it was being the doorkeeper
at Centennial Convention closing Ritual and “welcoming” the PIPs on through.

What has been your favorite AOII sisterhood or philanthropy event you have
attended or planned?
It would have to be being a part of the 25th Anniversary celebration for Kappa

Lambda chapter back in 2010. So amazing to see so many sisters!

Fun facts about yourself: With having a history degree, I am pretty
good at Jeopardy and Trivial Pursuit, and kill it at Name That Tune
night. I also play in two leagues for fantasy football and come in the
top five each year. My hubby and I like to do “sports tourism” – our
favorite is going to the 4th of July baseball game between Red Sox
and Yankees in the last year at old Yankee Stadium. Finally, I cheer
for a lot of different teams/sports (hockey and baseball being the
faves), but my hubby and I do not cheer for any of the same teams!

Volunteering

FORAOII

As tens of thousands of sisters can attest to, AOII is not just four years, it is for life. Your AOII
experience does not have to end after you put on that cap and gown. In fact, the AOII alumnae
experience can be just as rewarding as the collegiate experience. Whether you graduated college
3 months ago or 30 years ago, there are countless ways to stay connected to AOII. One of the
most valuable and rewarding opportunities to dive back into AOII is to volunteer at the local or
international level. Check out all these great volunteer options!

Volunteering Locally

COLLEGIATE CHAPTER
ALUMNAE ADVISORY COMMITTEES

If you live near a collegiate chapter, consider becoming an adviser. Each
collegiate chapter is supported by an Alumnae Advisory Committee
(AAC), comprised of alumnae who advise and collaborate with collegiate
chapter officers. These alumnae fill some of the most crucial AOII volunteer
positions available. Budget savvy alumnae might look to serve as Financial
Advisers; those with a passion for recruitment are needed as Recruitment Advisers;
and members who understand the pros and cons of social media use might serve
as Communications Advisers. Other needs could include Chapter Advisers, Risk
Management Advisers, Panhellenic Advisers, New Member Advisers and many more.

ALUMNAE CHAPTER
OFFICERS & CHAIRMEN

Alumnae Chapter involvement as officers and committee chairmen is another great
way to stay connected to AOII, while boosting your resume with great volunteer service
experiences. These roles, like those in an AAC, open the door to meeting AOIIs from chapters
across the US and Canada while building a strong alumnae sisterhood in your area. Short on
time? Many of these roles have a minimal time commitment, so they are great opportunities for
busy alumnae looking to get involved.

HOW TO APPLY FOR
A LOCAL POSITION

For more information on available local collegiate and alumnae positions, go to AOII’s Fulfilling
the Promise website at edu.alphaomicronpi.org. Once you have created an account or logged in,
click ‘All Contacts’ at the bottom of the left-hand column, then select the chapter you are interested
in serving. For collegiate AAC positions, contact the Network Specialist – Leadership or Chapter Adviser.
For alumnae chapters, the Chapter President is the first point of contact.

40| Volunteer Edition 2017

Volunteering Internationally

For AOIIs who are seeking more involvement, there are many volunteer opportunities available at the international
level. Members who love recruitment and travel may be a good fit as Recruitment Ambassadors or Network Specialists -
Recruitment. Members who love chapter operational efficiencies make ideal Network Specialists - Leadership. There are roles
for financially-minded members, public relations experts, alumnae chapter specialists and many others. Specific details of each
are outlined on the AOII website/About/Opportunities/Volunteer Position descriptions. See application on AOII’s website for
qualifications.

HOW TO APPLY FOR AN INTERNATIONAL POSITION

The first step is to complete a Volunteer Application Form located on the AOII website under ‘About/Opportunities.’
Applicants may rank the volunteer positions in order of preference for serving. Once submitted, a volunteer from the Human
Resources Committee will be in contact to discuss available opportunities that match skills and interests. Potential Fraternity
volunteer positions are listed below.

NETWORK DIRECTORS & NETWORK SPECIALISTS

There is one Network Director per Network, and these roles are typically filled by veteran volunteers who have previously
served as a Network Specialist or another comparable position. Working closely with staff and the Specialist in their Networks,
NDs also serve as part of the Fraternity Management Committee.
There are five Network Specialist areas, including: NS-Alumnae, NS-Development, NS-Finance, NS-Leadership and NS-
Recruitment. These roles work under the guidance of a Network Director with assigned chapters within a network to support
the specific area of expertise.

COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN AND MEMBERS & SPECIAL APPOINTMENTS

AOII currently operates with several committees that hold specific responsibilities. These Committees include
Constitution Interpretation & Revision Committee (CIRC), the Education Committee (EC), the Human Resources
Committee (HRC), the Public Relations Committee, and the Rituals, National Panhellenic Conference
Committee (NPC), Rituals, Traditions & Jewelry Committee (RT&J), and the Nominating Trustees (NT).
Several positions are filled by special appointments by the AOII Executive Board. These roles
include the AOII Historian, International Parliamentarian and the National Panhellenic
Conference Chairman.

AOII BOARD POSITIONS

The members of the AOII Executive Board and AOII Foundation Board are elected
by AOII Council at Convention. The nominating process and qualifications to
serve are detailed on the AOII website. The process is currently in progress
for board elections in June 2017. The AOII Properties Board is appointed
by the Executive Board. Members serve two-year terms beginning
on July 1. For more information and a board application, contact
the HRC at [email protected].

RECRUITMENT AMBASSADORS
& TRAINING AMBASSADORS

Recruitment Ambassadors are volunteers who travel to collegiate
chapters to assist with recruitment. Training Ambassadors travel to
AACs to train and assist with efficient operations. To apply to become a
Recruitment Ambassador or Training Ambassador, or for more information,
contact Lindsay Stoltz at [email protected]..
