$12,110 Donated to Foundation at Convention
International Convention 1991 was a huge success for the AOII Foundation as attendees donated over $12,000 in gifts to each of the Foundation's funds throughout the five day Convention. Rose Tributes were a Convention highlight as 1404 Tributes were purchased to honor sisters. Rose Tributes were proudly displayed on white ribbons attached to name badges.
During the Foundation Luncheon, several Chapters were honored for their outstanding support during the 1989-91 Biennium. Kay Sutherlin, 1989-91 Foundation President, distributed certificates to the top collegiate and alumnae chapters in two categories; highest per member giving and highest total giving for the biennium. The award winners for the Highest Per Member Giving were Hammond Area Alumnae and Kappa Tau. Southeastern Louisiana U. Southern Orange County, Chicago West Suburban, Kappa Kappa, and Gamma Sigma received runner-up certificates for that category. The top alumnae and collegiate chapters for Highest Total Giving were Hammond Area Alumnae and Kappa Kappa. Ball State U. Southern Orange County, Phoenix, Kappa Tau and Pi Delta received runner-up certificates for highest total giving. A plaque has been placed in the Foundation Offices to honor the top collegiate and alumnae chapters each biennium.
Kay Sutherlin, left, presents the award for highest total giving to the Foundation from an alumnae chapter to Pattie Dowie, President of the Hammond Area Alumnae Chapter.
Each Convention meal was followed by announcements of special gifts made throughout the year, as well as during Convention. Announcements included life insurance policies given by Catherine Daugherty Cifers, Nu Omicron '27 and Candace Pierson-Charlton, Alpha Rho 70; a $1,000 gift and a $4,000 pledge from Pi Kappa Corporation to establish an eodowed Pi Kappa Scholarship; and a $20,000 gift to the Endowment from Natalie Overall Warren, Nu Omicron '17. At the Rose Banquet a $1,000 gift from Lambda Sigma, which is the initial donation to establish the Carolyn Huey Harris Scholarship, was announced. Carolyn Harris, Lambda Sigma, is a Past International President.
Mary Converse, Kay Sutherlin and Becky Weinberg were elected to 4 year terms on the Foundation Board of Directors.
Foundation officers for the 1991-93 Biennium are Elise Moss, President; Kay Sutherlin, Vice President; Jo Beth Heflin, Treasurer; and Becky Weinberg, Secretary.
Jo Ann Gibbons, Mary Ann Jenkins, and Kelley Hervey celebrating sisterhood under the Foundation's Rose Trellis.

Council approves merger of DJF into the AOII Foundation
International Convention 1991 delegates participated in a historic moment when they voted to merge the Diamond Jubilee Foundation into the Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation. This vote represents over two years of hard work as both entities nego- tiated the details of the merger.
Prior to the vote, Karen Mills, D J F Trustee, read a statement from Ann Galvani, also a Trustee. In her remarks Ann stated, ". . .DJF decided a merger is now the best step for fulfilling DJF's responsibility for enhancing scholarship opportunities
Carolyn Huey Harris dies
Past International President Carolyn Huey Harris, Lambda Sigma (U. of Georgia), died August 10, 1991, after a lengthy battle with cancer. The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to the Carolyn Huey Harris Scholarship Fund of the Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation. This new fund was estab- lished at the 1991 International Convention.
The Executive Board extends its sym- pathy to the family and friends of Carolyn. International President Barbara Daugs Hunt represented the Fraternity at the memorial service held for Carolyn on August 15,1991 in Atlanta.
An article about Carolyn Huey Harris is planned for the winter issue of To Dragma, and the editor invites Carolyn's friends to send in their recollections for possible use in the article. These are needed as soon as possible. Please phone the editor if you have questions.
and for displaying those fraternal attributes of wisdom and circumspec- tion. . . . T h e responsibility for this important change will belong to our whole Fraternity membership. W e hope, but expect, that each of you will fully embrace its importance and participate in the obligation and provide the strength this action needs to succeed."
Following the final vote, a merger celebration was initiated by the spirit committee. All Diamond Jubilee Board members present at Conven- tion were invited to the front of the
room while they were applauded for their years of dedication to DJF.
The Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation was formed in 1979 as the organiza- tion to receive contributions for the Development Fund and Arthritis Research Fund. In 1983, the Ruby Fund was merged into the AOII Foundation and several years later, the Endowment Fund was formed. With the merger of DJF, all Fraternity fund raising is now under the umbrella organization of the Alpha Omicron Pi Foundation.
From Our Readers: Desert Storm vet says "Thanks"!
To the editor:
I was recently assigned to Operation Desert Storm and spent almost 4 months in
the northern Saudi Arabian desert. Although it's been 20 years since I graduated from Wagner College my sisters from Theta Pi rallied to my support and that of my family during this most challenging time.
Caryl Beth Linsenmaier organized a letter writing campaign to support me in the Gulf. She also stayed in weekly contact with my husband and children (who she has never met) offering support and encouragement. I heard from sisters who graduated after I did who I did not know but with whom I felt a bond at this critical time in my life.
No matter how many miles and years and what circumstances separate AOHs, the bond of friendship really does last a lifetime. The sisters of Theta Pi truly exemplified the lifelong commitment of AOII. Thank you to all sisters who supported AOIIs in Desert Storm.

CORRECTION
The article about Margaret Bourke- White on page 43 of the summer issue of To Dragma should have said that Margaret's photo of the construction of the Fort Peck Dam was used on the front cover of the first issue of Life magazine. To Dragma regrets the error.

Notable:
Anne Crawford Symonds- engineer, business owner
Anne Crawford Symonds, Upsilon (U. of Washington), the Notable for this issue of To Dragma, has succeeded in a field dominated by men.
She is the president and founder of Anne Symonds & Associates, a 25- person civil, sanitary and structural engineering firm in Seattle, W A .
Her firm has been in business for ten years. She does business with clients in both the public and private sectors. The firm is one of the oldest and largest woman-owned consulting firms in Seattle.
Anne, 38, comes from a family of engineers; her father and two brothers are engineers.
She was the first woman engineer to work in the Seattle Engineering Department, and she was one of only four women out of a class of 80 who graduated in 1975. She returned to school in 1976 and completed her thesis
just two days before getting married on New Year's Day, 1977. Husband Dan is also an engineer.
In March 1978, having completed her masters degree, she joined a consulting firm in Seattle and worked there until she opened her own business in July,
1980.
The fact that her husband had a
steady job meant that Anne could risk not having a salary until the business began to make a profit. For the first six months, the total gross for Anne's company was a meager $1,300. But she was "beating the bushes" to obtain clients. It paid off; at the end of
1980, she got her first big job. Since then, business has continued to improve. Her brother Bruce, Anne's first employee, was hired in September of
1981. Her first child was born in August 1981. Since then her business has grown steadily, and she had a second child in 1983.
Through the years, both the business and the method of child care have
operated from her home, and she took care of her children with the help of part time day care. By 1984, the business had grown too large to comfortably operate from home, so the firm moved down- town. A t that point, Anne hired nannies to come in and take care of the children at home. Now the children are in school during the day and attend a day care after school.
Anne herself says that the best thing about her job is "being able to shape my life and the lives of my employees by the type of office environment and structure I provide."
Apparently Anne has a reputation of being a good employer because the local Society of Women Engineers invited her to speak on the subject "What makes a great place to work" at the group's banquet.
Although her business keeps her busy, Anne is interested in keeping her family life on an even keel. In the early days when her business and her children were younger, she took Fridays o f f to spend with her children. Her business didn't suffer, though.
"I found that made me much more efficient in the four days I did work," she says.
In 1987, her firm received an Award of Excellence from the Small Business Association for women-owned busi- nesses.
Now that her children are older— Peter is nine and Sarah is seven—Anne no longer takes Fridays off, but she does sometimes work less than a 40-hour week. She routinely leaves early to be a "a chauffeur to soccer games and dentist appointments."
She explains that she works for an hourly wage like everyone else at her firm, so she is not taking from the firm's profits when she takes time out. Anne seems to be living proof that being a successful business owner does not have to make one a workaholic.
Anne has also remained active in the
Anne Crawford Symonds
Lake City Christian Church. In 1985 the church named her "woman of the year."
Another volunteer activity dear to Anne's heart is the Campfire agency, where she is a board member of the local agency and chairman of the Master Plan Implementation Committee for the local camp. She is also active in fund raisingforUnitedWay.
When she was in college, Anne served as the AOII house manager and as rush chairman. She credits AOII with providing her with a good set of friends and experience in solving people problems.
"Those skills were and are more applicable to what I do now than much of what I learned in college," she adds.
As an alumna, Anne served as an assistant rush adviser for several years in the late '70s.
Anne advises collegians to learn all they can about business, writing and management in school. She believes that the biggest challenge facing women today is "Trying to do a good job at work and at home and not feel guilty about either."
