Summer 2011 - To Dragma

Summer 2011 - To Dragma

Taryn Hinderland

Xi (U of Oklahoma)

With a long list of AOII offices and awards on her résumé,
Taryn’s experiences as a leader are sure to benefit all of the
chapters she visits. Thankful for all that AOII has done for
her, she became an ELC with the mindset that she still has
something to give back to her Fraternity. Driven by the
gratification of serving others, Taryn played a pivotal role
in both her chapter and college community, making her an
ideal mentor to all of her sisters wherever they may be.

What is your favorite movie? I have so many! I was a film major so

Jessica Li

Sigma Alpha (West Virginia U)

Having served as Chapter President, VP Membership
Recruitment, and Chapter Development, Jessica’s
talents have a lot to offer to AOIIs everywhere. Her
many perspectives and enthusiasm for the Fraternity
helps her to understand the bigger picture for
chapters. Having seen great results in her own
chapter from the help of Headquarters staff and
volunteers, she looks forward to helping each chapter
she visits build upon their amazing qualities.

What’s playing on your iPod right now? Michael Bublé. I just went to his concert and he

Adderall Abuse

In the library of a college campus,
a young woman sits at a table studying for an exam that she has the
next day. It’s a busy week for her – she has two big exams and
a paper due, a homecoming float she is scheduled to help
build, three meetings to attend and a group project that
needs attention. All of this, on top of attending classes
and working a job that helps pay for her education.
Surrounded by books and a half-full coffee cup, she
looks calm under pressure as she scans through
the notes from the past three lectures. She’s been
here all afternoon and will be all night, but she
isn’t worried about how she will get everything
done. This week, she is relying on an old friend
for some extra help. Her friend is a little capsule
called Adderall.

Adderall is a prescription medication that is
licensed to control attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD) in both children and
adults, and can be used to help with certain
sleep disorders such as narcolepsy. The drug is
a combination of two stimulants, amphetamine
and dextroamphetamine, which is believed to help
patients by restoring the chemical balance of certain
natural substances located in the brain. When used for
the treatment of sleep disorders, the medicine works
like a typical stimulant, using higher doses to reduce
daytime sleepiness and keep patients alert. However
when prescribed to treat patients with ADHD, an
opposite reaction occurs and a calming effect
is produced.

On college campuses across the nation, this
prescription drug has become as common to
students as textbooks and highlighters. A single
dose of the medication seems to offer everything
that a student desires while studying – extra energy
and an increased ability to pay attention and stay
focused. With all of the pressures on students to succeed

for arthritis research and education, in addition
to their first annual “Piatholon Games.” This
friendly competition raised $252 which was
donated to a foundation founded by Eastern’s
president, Doug Whitlock, in honor of his
grandson who passed away recently.

{ }Part 3 in a 4 Part Series

A Profile on

Helen St. Clair Mullan

In this 3rd piece of a 4-part series, we present Stella’s personal reflection on her dear friend Helen St. Clair Mullan.
As AOII's Historian, Stella took great pride to record the history of Alpha Omicron Pi and to ensure that those
who lived long after her would understand the true friendship our four Founders had for one another. The final
piece in the series will conclude with a personal reflection on Stella Perry.

The only complaint I can bring against Helen
St Clair Mullan is this: When a lady so
distinguished is also too modest to "tell" on
herself, the historians lot is not a happy one. Of
course, I know, we all know, the general story
of Helen's varied and brilliant conquests; we have
proudly basked in their light for years. But to make
her disclose names, dates and accurate lists of honors
is no slight task for a busy reporter, especially one
accustomed not to "boss" but to be "bossed" by the
subject. But a kind fate has helped us. After Mrs.
Mullan had ignored with affectionate amusement
the historian's many vain attempts to "celebrate" her,
- for Helen never would take herself or her friends'
admiration as seriously as both deserve, the Barnard
College Alumnae Association came to the rescue.

Mrs. Mullan has been nominated and is being
enthusiastically supported for Alumnae Trustee of
Barnard College. The Alumnae Association has sent
its members a printed circular giving the history of
the candidates. From it we glean the following facts (I
wonder, indignantly, how that committee got its data!)
about Helen St. Clair Mullan:

Musically talented, Helen St. Claire (left) was a member of the Banard Banjo Club. She was graduated from Barnard in 1898 and from the
New York University Law School in 1901. She served
on the most important committees of the Alumnae
Association, - as the Charter and By-Lays Revision
Committee, the Faculty Committee on Student
Organizations, -- and has been Vice President,
Assistant Treasurer and President of the Associated
Alumnae of Barnard College, as well as Chairman of
the Alumnae Council. She was admitted to the Bar
in 1901, was a member of the New York City Board
of Education, serving as Chairman of its Building and
Sites Committee. She was a member of the Advisory

but just as a lawyer, on their own terms.
During the war, Mrs. Mullan substituted for
a prominent New York lawyer, who was then
doing duty in Washington and in his stead
successfully conducted one of the large law

That is a glimpse of the e cient, sensible,
businesslike, outside Helen. But the feminine
home one, the Helen we know, is still better.
I lived with her in our girlhood; and that's the
way really to know a girl. She is a wonderful
"pal". Why, Helen used to get up at night to
play the violin and her virtues were such --
and so was the quality of her playing-- that
I continued to love her. Seriously, though,
in this connection, she has musical gifts of a
high order.

As girls and women, Helen has always had a
ne reticence and is beside so busy that she

has not always the time to make gestures
of a ection; but before you need her she
will be found responsive to every call of
friendship. All the honors she achieved -- all
she achieved in college and in the world, --everything
she accomplishes is accompanied by astonishing ease
and a certain light nesse. This surface ripple covers
generally unsuspected depths of sensitive feeling and
an inexhaustible reservoir of courage and kindness.

We used to say of Helen at college, "And still the
wonder grew that one small head could carry all
she knew." The wonder is still growing. But her
head is no greater marvel than her heart. She has, in
abundance unusual among women, certain fraternal
virtues and there are no littlenesses, no envy, no
small-gauged emotions in her. No one whom I know
rejoices more completely in other's triumphs.
