The Piper 2-9

Monthly articles in AOII’s monthly e-newsletter to AOII Council members served
as reminders and a source of additional information. Additionally, the January Piper
included an imbedded audio recording event recap from an AOII Executive Board
Member who is personally effected by arthritis. At the time Jessie Wang-Grimm
submitted her article (p. 26), the final tally was not complete. Once all the donations
were counted, the Fraternity proudly reached our $150,000 goal!

To Dragma 10-23

Articles about Jingle Bell Run first appeared in the Spring 2016 issue of To Dragma,
but were most prominently featured in the online philanthropy issue of the
magazine. This first-ever arthritis edition has proven to be a valuable source of
information for our members.

Join Our JBR Team!

As you know, AOII International President Gayle Fitzpatrick is serving as the 2016
National Jingle Bell Run Chair with a $150,000 fundraising commitment! The Jingle
Bell Run is a festive 5K with a 1-mile option event for the whole family. More than 100
JBR events will take place in cities all across the U.S. during November and December.
Funds raised for JBR benefit arthritis research - so AOII encourages every chapter to
get with the spirit and create or join an AOII team! If an event is not being held in your
area, or that event conflicts with school schedules, you are invited to join another AOII
Team of your choice or select the “Franklin, TN Jingle In Your Jammies” JBR team at
jbr.org.
• For all collegiate and alumnae chapters registering a team and participating, we will

publish your school name (and potentially a photo) in the Spring To Dragma.
• For all collegiate and alumnae chapters raising over $1000 will receive additional

recognition in the magazine.
• For all collegiate and alumnae chapters raising over $500, a “Hot Chocolate Sisterhood” gift box

will be sent to the chapter in January so the chapter can host a sisterhood “thank you” event. Besides hot
chocolate and marshmallows, the kits will also include custom printed AOII coffee sleeves as our way of
saying thanks.

Today

is Jingle in your
Jammies Day!

We need everyone’s help TODAY to reach our Jingle Bell Run fundraising goal of $150,000! AOII’s International
President Gayle Fitzpatrick is leading the way as the 2016 National JBR Chair, so please donate today and encourage
your sisters, family and friends to help AOII meet our goal!
As of this morning, we have raised $118,336. While most of these dollars have been raised by AOII’s JBR teams and
participants, today’s giving option offers everyone another way to show support. Jingle in Your Jammies was created
by the Arthritis Foundation to give participants an option to support the Jingle Bell Run event series and raise crucial
funds for the AF even for those not able to make it out to an event in person.

To support AOII’s Jingle in Your Jammies Team, click on this link.
Once you are on our Team page, you have two options:
1- JOIN TEAM means you are joining our Jingle in Your Jammies team for a $40 donation. You will receive the

event tee shirt by mail.
2- DONATE NOW means you can give any amount of your choosing. Selecting this option does not include a tee shirt.
Help us spread the word - once you give, post on social media a photo of yourself in your pajamas, a holiday costume,
holiday socks, a fun hat, holding a mug of cocoa, dress up your pet, or whatever other means of festive attire you can
think up! Then proudly share that you are supporting AOII and the Jingle Bell Run. Please tag AOII and use the hashtag
#JingleInYourJammiesWithAOII.
During 2016, AOII has already given $575,000 to the Arthritis Foundation, and that total does not even including
these JBR dollars! AOII is funding meaningful research, sponsoring a popular juvenile arthritis backpack program for
patients, sending families to conferences and camps and supporting other outstanding programs. We are truly making
a difference.

Please join our Jingle in Your Jammies team TODAY by clicking here.
(Notes: Our National AOII Jingle in Your Jammies team is registered under the Franklin, Tennessee event. Though we
would appreciate your gift today, you can join or donate to this team anytime between now and December 15.)

Executive Board Excerpts

Click to hear the message.

Happy New Year! As we ring in a new year, I would like to
reflect on the success of the many Jingle Bell Run events in
2016. This festive event is the Arthritis Foundation’s signature
5k run to benefit arthritis research, awareness and education!
I am especially proud that more than 1,500 AOIIs strapped
bells to their feet or Jingled in Your Jammies on 125 teams
representing close to 175 collegiate and alumnae chapters. The
colorful holiday run costumes always add that extra special
pop to the event!

On December 5th, our AOII Headquarters staff joined in Jessie Wang-Grimm
the JBR merriment, wearing their PJs to the office for a day (Phi Chi/U of Chicago)
dedicated to enhancing arthritis awareness and promoting
participating in a JBR event or Jingle in Your Jammies. Many International Vice President
AOII sisters and chapter from city to city were recognized
for being top fundraisers, too! As of this recording, Team
AOII National cumulatively has raised more than $135,000
with several days still left to fundraise toward our goal
of $150,000. Together, we have all stepped it up for our
International President Gayle Fitzpatrick, the National
Chair of the 2016 Jingle Bell Run!

As an arthritis patient for the last 14 years, I was incredibly honored to serve on AOII’s JBR
Champions Committee in 2016, and share my personal story. My rheumatoid arthritis
journey has brought some of the most challenging and painful days, but also truly hopeful
ones, with successful treatments that have helped me to regain physical function and a sense
of being back to normal. It’s not a perfect science, of course, and I still experience a lot of
inflammation and pain from time to time, but I am so happy that the good days definitely
outweigh the bad ones.

During JBR season, I have been so touched to see all the AOIIs coming out in force to help
people like myself, and this year, I had sisters in the Washington D.C. area, Chicago and
Nashville, all running for me at a time when I could not. Thanks to your dedication and
generosity, newly diagnosed adults and children will have better educational resources
and exercise programs available to them, to move forward beyond the doctor’s office, and
function better in their homes, schools and workplace. Children will enjoy camp programs
and conferences that introduce them to others in the same situation, and help them feel less
isolated. Please know that whether you jingled in your jammies, or braved the cold in your
Santa suits and elf hats, you made a meaningful difference for every patient who suffers and
hopes for a cure in the future. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!
