Questions with Kaya56 | Fall 2025Use this QR Code to make a suggestion for our next issue!Do you have a question for Kaya? What inspired you to go into higher education and eventually work for AOII? My personal career path, like many others, was inspired by my parents and nurtured by great family role models and mentors. My parents worked hard to instill a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility and dedication in me. My entire family were hard workers who valued education. In fact, my mom went back to school as an adult and single parent. While I was in high school, she completed both an undergraduate and master's degree and began her own career in higher education. So not only was she an incredible role model to me as a young child, but I watched her support and mentor hundreds of young men and women in their collegiate careers as a teenager and young adult, as well.I arrived at college with an abundance of ambition, fueled by my mom's encouragement. I channeled that ambitious energy towards forming lifelong friendships and relationships, getting involved in a lot of campus activities and leadership roles, and experiencing all that college life had to offer. I excelled less at my first semester chemistry course! Faced with options after my first semester to improve my science grade and to continue on an aspirational medical career path, I took stock of what I loved about college and took inspiration from my mom’s higher education career. Ultimately, I decided that supporting college student development was a great path for me as well. I spent the next three and a half years getting involved in as many activities that campus life could offer and being mentored by outstanding professionals who also shaped my path. I was encouraged to further my studies by earning my master's in education following my undergraduate degree in psychology. My first day at work as a first-year graduate student dropped me right in the middle of Panhellenic recruitment! Beyond the different chants and cheers and excited energy, I was immediately part of the remarkable impact that belonging, acceptance, and being selected for chapter leadership roles made on young women, and it reshaped where I wanted my future career focus to be. I followed that path to a profession in higher education which very fortunately introduced me to even more exceptional mentors, opportunities to learn and grow, and to service with AOII. That service led to a career change away from a campus environment and to our professional staff, which has been one of the greatest professional honors I’ve been given. In AOII we Inspire Ambition, and for me that inspiration was not a linear path, but one that has been built on those family-inspired values of hard work, dedication, and a responsibility to serve others. I have been lifted up by great role models and mentors who gently pushed me forward, provided great advice, and celebrated my successes as their own. What continues to inspire me to serve AOII is the chance to do that for others – to pay back the wealth of opportunity that has been spent on me, to model the way and teach the lessons I’ve learned to others, and to celebrate the ambitions of those who continue to shape the future of AOII.QUESTIONS FOR KAYAQ:A:Kaya Gerberich Miller, Gamma Theta (U of South Florida) has served as AOII’s Executive Director (ED) since January 2020 following ten years in the role of Assistant Executive Director.
