Stella’s Wish

The Stella’s Wish campaign is still going strong! We continue to strive to educate our members, support
our alumnae, lead our chapters to success, grow as a sisterhood and maintain our heritage. From Phoenix
to Orlando, we have had multiple fundraising events all over the country, and a couple events to go.
Thanks to our donors, committee members and volunteers, the future of AOII looks brighter than ever!

Rebuilding Lives

Bianca Sepulveda, Phi Chi (U of Chicago) and her new husband of only 23 days, To Dragma • 53
Brendan, stayed home last October 29th. That’s not fasicinating news except that the
young couple lives on a peninsula in Rockaway, New York and a hurricane named
Sandy was bearing down on them. Like most of their neighbors, they sandbagged their
driveway, stocked up on necessities and hoped that the storm would leave minimal
damage as was the case with Hurricane Irene a year earlier. At 6:30 pm, they watched
the tide swell from their view of Jamaica Bay, with no flooding. But less than an hour
later, their street had turned into a river and the ocean met the bay for the first time in 50
years. Watching and listening to transformer stations explode around them, they finally
heard their own substation give out and were submerged into darkness.

They shut off their furnance, but were unable to reach gas lines already below water level on the first floor of
their home. The smell of burning tires somewhere nearby ignited fear that the baseball-sized flying embers might
spark a fire in one house and spread to others, which is exactly what happened just 10 blocks away when 20
homes burned to the ground. Brendan heard cries and rescued a neighbor and her young daughter from the
current in their street while water in their home continued to rise and they waited for morning to access the
damage. “Superstorm Sandy” devastated the Rockaway community, but comfort came from knowing that
everyone they knew was safe.

Two of Bianca’s Phi Chi sisters suggested that she apply for assistance from the AOII Foundation Ruby Fund.
She shares, “The aid I received from AOII has allowed us to settle back into our second floor and purchase the
materials needed to rebuild the first floor. This is a tremendous blessing. Many residents here feel that the city has
largely abandoned them and the burden of rebuilding is squarely on their shoulders. AOII has given me and my
family the chance to rebuild and find normalcy again.”

In addition to external damage, the couple lost nearly everything that sits below four feet
on the first floor, including their car. She and John even lost wedding gifts they had not
yet opened. Bianca wants her sisters to know, “By far, some of the most painful material
losses were the memories--photos of my U of Chicago days with AOII, old family photos,
journals-- those are items that cannot be replaced. I would highly recommend scanning
old photos like this; you never know what will happen.”

Bianca believes that joining AOII was one of the best decisions she made in college. “I
formed bonds with women who today-- a decade later--have supported me through the
happiest and hardest times in
my life. Our days together at the
U of Chicago helped shape our
identity and values. I learned
lessons from my sisters about
perseverance, selflessness, love
and the joy of having faith in
one another. The spirit of this
fraternity lives in its pledge to
serve and support one another.
I am honored to be a part of
that pledge and look forward to
helping other sisters in their time
of need.”

Greater Kansas City

We have started the year strong with great communication via
Facebook, tweets, email and phone calls. We have been busy
with philanthropic efforts, such as taking part in an Extreme
Yard Rakeover event helping disadvantaged seniors in our
community. This year, our group will be collecting pandas at
Founders’ Day for a local pediatric rheumatologist. We look
forward to a night at the community theater, visiting monthly
for lunch and a few other social outings, as well as the Arthritis
Walk, of course!

Greater Sacramento Valley

At last, a chapter in California’s capital! The Greater Sacramento
Valley Alumnae Chapter was installed August 12, 2012 with
a group of 17 amazing women. Our fall activities included
an October movie night, Thanksgiving dinner service to the
homeless in November and a holiday party/ornament exchange
in December. In 2013 we’ll be fund raising for local charities at
“Guns & Hoses”, an annual football game between Sacramento’s
law enforcement and firefighters. We will also continue our
outreach to local alumnae while providing support to newly-
installed collegiate chapters in Northern California.

teaming up with Delta Theta Chapter (Texas Woman’s U) in
many events. We partnered with the Academic Chair to provide
goodies for exam baskets, and in December had a holly jolly time
at the Jingle Bell Run in Arlington, Texas! Future events include
sharing Founders’ Day when the chapter returns from Winter
Break. To reconnect with alumnae in the area, we’ve hosted an
event to kick o our year. We also had No Show November,
where in lieu of a meeting, each of us donated to our local food
banks. Future events include Painting With a Twist and a family
event planned for spring 2013.

Oklahoma City/Metro Area

Between seasonal and holiday celebrations, activities and
gatherings, 2012 was an amazing year for the Oklahoma City/
Metro Alumnae Chapter! We’re a young chapter, having been
recolonized in 2010, so we always have new experiences. This
year our alumnae were excited to focus on Founders’ Day and
celebrate the 10th anniversary of Xi Chapter (U of Oklahoma)
with local collegiate members. Due to calendar con icts, we
celebrated in early December with a hot cocoa bar, ritual, and
sisterhood. It was a fantastic way to wrap up our rst year and
remember why we all love AOII and stay involved as alumnae.

The Richmond Area Alumnae Chapter is working hard on
increasing membership and participation. We are excited
about the upcoming year as we have several events planned that
are family focused so more members can attend. We are also
including philanthropic activities at more events. The chapter,
along with the Rho Beta collegiate chapter, just participated in
the Jingle Bell Run and we are looking forward to our annual
cookie exchange where we hope the new alumnae from Rho
Beta will be able to join us.

San Antonio

Our light shines bright deep in the Heart of Texas! The San
Antonio Alumnae Chapter started out the year by mingling
at our Big’z Burger Joint Social and then we welcomed new
alumnae at our Champagne & Chocolates Event - one of our
unique traditions. We held a luncheon with the new members
of Upsilon Lambda to enjoy sisterhood and pair up as Alum
Chums. After all, AOII is from Initiation to Eternity! We
held a Kick-O event at the Quarry Hofbrau as well as a
group painting event at Paint Palooza. Our Jacqueminot Rose
paintings are Van Gogh worthy! We are looking forward to
a fashion accessory gift exchange at our Holiday Dazzler and
participating in the Jingle Bell Run. With all of this, the SAAC
has doubled its membership in less than a year!
