CRYSTAL GRAFTON COMBS

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
Picayune, Mississippi

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Nu Beta, University of Mississippi
Hammond Area Alumnae Chapter
New Orleans Area Alumnae Chapter

4

Candidate Summary Statement:

Membership in Alpha Omicron Pi forever changed my life. As an undergraduate member of our
Fraternity, my shared experiences with women from my chapter and across our sisterhood built character
and leadership skills, inspired confidence, and provided opportunities for growth as a member of our
Fraternity and as an individual. These women challenged me, supported me, and inspired me. They
taught me how to lead and how to serve.
I believe that my collective experiences as a member and officer of each of our three volunteer boards,
beginning with AOII Properties, continuing through my service on our Foundation, and now as a Vice
President of our Executive Board, have prepared me to lead our Fraternity as International President. As
Vice President, I have had the opportunity to serve as a member of three Executive Board committees,
as the chairperson of one, and as a liaison to standing committees, network teams, and Past International
Presidents. Continued service would allow me the opportunity to further the goals of our Fraternity,
sustaining and strengthening our presence within our NPC community, focusing internally on leadership
within the Policy Governance® model adopted by our Executive Board in 2018, strengthening our
professional and volunteer partnerships, and providing an exceptional membership experience for every
member of Alpha Omicron Pi.
My personal vision for our Fraternity is that every chapter is a chapter of choice. This means that we must
live our Ritual in a way that positively impacts everyone with whom our paths cross, remaining true to
the four pillars of our Fraternity – character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty. It means that we are
emboldened to share what it is to be an AOII, capturing our own story, sharing it, and living it in such a
way that it inspires confidence in others to do the same. It also means that every member of AOII finds
value in her own experience and fulfills our commitment of sisterhood for a lifetime. Last, but not least, it
means that each of us strives to inspire ambition in the world around us, paving the way for our future.
My AOII, community/volunteer, and professional experiences have given me an opportunity to
learn and grow, to be challenged in that growth, and to enhance my leadership skills and personal
development. I have learned the importance of being a dynamic leader, adapting to the changing
needs and expectations of those around me; the importance of listening, intentionally and with the
purpose of understanding; and the necessity of collaboration, especially with those who share different
perspectives. These interactive skills, combined with my own personal commitment to leadership
development, continue to strengthen my ability to lead and to serve our Fraternity.
Founder Stella George Stern Perry is quoted as saying, “Humanly speaking, you are all founders of Alpha
Omicron Pi today, quite as truly as we were in the beginning. We know that you will always lay the same
eternal foundations and that you will build upon them with constancy, patience and unfaltering faith.” I
am honored for the opportunity to build on that foundation and to lead our Fraternity into the future.

BARBARA (BARB) DUNN ZIPPERIAN
CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
Franklin, Tennessee

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Kappa Kappa, Ball State University
Nashville Area Alumnae Chapter

6

Candidate Summary Statement:

When I joined Alpha Omicron Pi, I found a sense of belonging. I had no idea that my pledge as a 19-year-
old college freshman would be the lifelong promise that our founders wanted for each of us who wear
the badge of AOII. I’d love to see each member who takes that exact same pledge find a similar sense
of belonging and sisterhood that I found and that I’ve experienced over the years. My dedication to the
organization who gave so much to me gives me the chance to inspire others to grab ahold of what AOII
has to offer and cherish it for a lifetime.
I honestly believe that my membership in AOII helped to mold and make me into the person I am today.
My degree in accounting, my work in the banking industry, my marriage and the opportunities I’ve had
for leadership and service are all examples of how AOII has inspired and influenced my decisions, my
character and my commitments. My experiences as a leader in my career, non-profit work and AOII
service give me a unique opportunity to continue to move the fraternity forward into the next decade.
My goals for the position of International President would be to inspire all members to live our values,
share our sisterhood, and protect our brand. As Chief Governance Officer (CGO) on a board working
under the Policy Governance model, my role would be to see to it that the board governs as it said it
would govern in its written governance policies. The CGO is to be a servant-leader for the board and the
board works for the members. I believe that this type of model will serve our fraternity well and that I can
be the leader that is needed. As we transition the organization into Policy Governance operations there
is work to be done to further educate and train and our membership. I look forward to outlining the vision
and leading us through this change using my character traits of honesty, solid communication skills,
confidence, and integrity.

SUSAN BONIFIELD

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT OF FINANCE
& INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Durham, North Carolina

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Nu Beta, University of Mississippi
Triangle Alumnae Chapter

8

Candidate Summary Statement:

My vision for the Fraternity is one of careful and strategic growth coupled with greater flexibility and
openness. We should continue to build on the significant work that has been done to implement policy
governance and steady our organization on a base of excellence, efficiency and feedback. A strong
financial position is critical to support our growing sisterhood and to provide the programming that instills
the concept of our lifetime commitment into each member. We must also be able to clearly demonstrate
the value our members can expect in return for that commitment.

Primarily, we must continue to refine the policy governance work that has been completed to date,
objectively determining its effectiveness over time and making changes as necessary. This effort must be
considered a constantly evolving process that should be expected to bend and change as we achieve
current goals and are impacted by the changes taking place across the Greek and higher education
communities. My goals include ensuring our Fraternity’s volunteer structure is prepared to support our
membership while enhancing the experience of our current chapters, providing more accessible and
clear information to our members regarding our Fraternity’s financial strategy, and continuing to place a
priority on engaging our alumnae members in whatever way is most appropriate for the current stage of
their life. We must focus on communication both to and from our membership in its broadest form and
thoughtfully create ways to listen, allowing all members to provide input into our Fraternity’s future.

I believe that I am uniquely qualified to bring more clarity regarding the financial performance of the
Fraternity to our membership and I have a strong process focus that leads to improved efficiency and
more thoughtful decision making. My volunteer experience in almost every level of Fraternity operations
has given me the background to view issues from many perspectives. Finally, I am deeply committed
to the values of Alpha Omicron Pi and will work to demonstrate that commitment to our membership in
everything that I do. Service to the Fraternity and our members is a privilege; one we must approach with
open minds and hearts, valuing each perspective and opinion equally while never losing sight of our
responsibility to lead with love.

ASHLEY BARNES DUMAT

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Murfreesboro, Tennessee

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Rho Omicron, Middle Tennessee State University
Nashville Area Alumnae Chapter

10

Candidate Summary Statement:

Membership in Alpha Omicron Pi has been one of the greatest gifts and honors of my life. With every
single step I’ve taken in AOII, beginning with my initiation in 1994, I have learned more about leadership,
friendship, sisterhood, acceptance, service, and confidence. I have been greatly influenced by inspiring,
ambitious women who inspired ambition within me.
My vision for the future of Alpha Omicron Pi begins with our Ritual. It is the foundation of who we are,
and WHY we are. I believe that the most important question we can ask ourselves when deciding on a
course of action, whether at the collegiate level or the international volunteer level, is “Does this honor
our Ritual?” With that in mind, my goals in serving on the Executive Board include:

• To continue to support collegiate and alumnae chapter growth, financial health, and sustainability;
• To encourage open communication between and among AOII leadership at all levels;
• To support (and personally demonstrate) AOII’s Culture Principles, as well as furthering the goals of

AOII’s Strategic Plan; and
• To help our chapters provide an exceptional membership experience through emphasizing

relationships among members.
My professional career and collective AOII experiences have shaped the person I am today: I am an
active listener, a collaborator, an open and honest communicator, a zealous advocate, a skilled facilitator,
and a mediator. I am an independent thinker, but also a team player. I believe in celebrating greatness,
while also finding ways to continue to push to the next level of excellence in order to avoid complacency.
I am intentional about choosing positivity, even in the face of challenges. I believe in taking responsibility
for my words and actions at all times.
This Fraternity offers so many opportunities for women to lead and to serve. AOIIs everywhere are doing
great things – we are chapter, campus, and community leaders; we are committed to philanthropy,
providing education, bringing awareness to women’s issues, and to providing women with amazing
membership experiences and relationships that last a lifetime. I am so proud to be a part of AOII, and I
would be honored to serve on the Executive Board.

LEE GRAY

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Tampa, Florida

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Epsilon Chi, Elon University
Tampa Bay Alumnae Chapter

12

Candidate Summary Statement:

As a charter member of Epsilon Chi in 1987, I was excited about launching AOII and charting a path for
women of Elon College. Today, my vision for AOII is similar, but on an expanded and deeper scale to
have our sisters be more engaged and empowered well beyond the collegian experience. I believe
we should be willing and able to look beyond the traditional sorority experience and offer more to our
sisters after graduation. When AOII launched Inspire Ambition, I felt a deep and renewed connection that
energized my interest in the fraternity. The tagline spoke to me and my experience as a career woman
after college, and made me realize I wanted to be connected to more AOII’s like me or those I could help
in their pursuits of success and happiness. Throughout my Army career, I often yearned for connection to
other professional women, especially being in a male-dominated career field. I wanted and needed the
mutual support and friendship, but didn’t have it given my constant career mobility and the lack of social
media. In today’s world, we could make that connection opportunity easier.

I have more to learn about how we currently connect and conduct business, but I believe we are in
a unique cultural and technological environment that offers a perfect intersection to build stronger
connections between and among our collegians and alumnae. This is the time to tackle the building
of a strong sister network for professional and personal support that reaches across our geographical
and age dispersions. Diversity and inclusion in the workplace are finally gaining momentum and an AOII
sister’s network can be a force multiplier to support each other during their journey to reach their goals.
It won’t be fast or easy, but it can be done. There are other Alumni groups that do this well and are
particularly strong in the professional career networking space and we can be too.

Throughout my life I found the greatest joy in serving and helping others reach their goals. The Army
afforded me that opportunity for 30 years and after achieving much personal success and retiring as
a Brigadier General, I still find the greatest joy in helping others succeed. I believe my military service,
grounded in the Army core values of honesty, integrity, selfless service and personal courage mirror what
is expected and needed of an AOII Executive Board member.

JAYNELLEN BEHRE JENKINS

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Glen Ridge, New Jersey

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Phi Beta, East Stroudsburg University
Northern NJ Alumnae Chapter, Charter Member
Central NJ Alumnae Chapter
Jersey Shore Alumnae Chapter
14 New York/NJ Metro Alumnae Chapter

Candidate Summary Statement:

AOII sisterhood was conceived from core values shared by four friends vowing that their friendships
would extend beyond their college years and that they would dedicate themselves to service. We
carry that charge today in the manner we serve our campuses and communities, dedicate ourselves
to Arthritis Research, and develop our leadership capacity. Brené Brown in Dare to Lead advises that
we anchor ourselves in two specific values and ensure all other actions are in alignment. I would bring
to AOII Executive Board my values of leading with integrity and approaching all new endeavors and
relationships with wholeheartedness.
We must be visionary and future predictive so that we anticipate evolving needs. I understand the
significance of addressing the needs expressed by our members because I am reflective and think from
a system and context approach. Incredible possibilities exist to implement new programming for our
alumnae members and volunteers. We are challenged yet positioned to be impactful through women's
leadership development and the lifelong enrichment of our members. Strengthening our collegian to
alumnae transitions with purposeful retention systems is vital to the future of AOII. If we are best served
by well-chosen members, then our ongoing excellence is dependent upon well-engaged alumnae.
We are always growing future leaders. It is incumbent upon us that we work together as one united AOII
sisterhood. Twenty-first-century opportunities also present new challenges. Our members are connected
like never before through social media yet we are also expressing interest in expanding communication.
We must design innovative programs for engagement among sisters. Our collective sisterhood must
continue to provide us with a sense of belonging and purposeful service to the fraternity and each other.
John Carver advocates for Policy Governance of Executive Boards so that we are visionary. He states
"Leadership cannot afford to overlook the wisdom of dreams, even the wisdom of playful dreaming."
AOII must not fear setting new standards for the fraternal experience. We must be reflective and then
innovative in every service we provide in the AOII journey from our newest to our most senior members.
An exceptional membership experience must drive program, policy, and planning. Seeking best practices
from our fraternal and other non-profit peers is beneficial but AOII must also be the standard bearer our
Founders intended. My Executive Board service would be dedicated to these intentions by leading with
integrity and wholeheartedness.

LISA NIEDENTHAL

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Los Angeles, California

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Beta Phi, Indiana University
Greater Los Angeles Alumnae Chapter

16

Candidate Summary Statement:

My vision for the future of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity is that we provide the preeminent membership
experience among all NPC groups.
AOII should lead the way in guiding and supporting young women to grow as individuals and productive
members of our world. AOII should provide lifelong opportunities for its alumnae members to realize
their full potential.
To that end, my goals if elected as a VP of the Executive Board are:
1) COLLABORATION – Increase collaboration among all levels of the fraternity from the collegiate
membership to advisors, network teams, standing committees, staff and boards. We talk a lot about
transparency. But to me what’s equally important is to collaborate at all levels of the Fraternity. Both
within and outside of AOII, I have extensive experience in building and managing teams to identify and
solve problems. We have a wealth of resources within our membership – women with creative ideas who
are passionate and hardworking and ready to build and improve AOII.
2) RESOURCE MANAGEMENT – Analyze the tools and resources we have – both human and financial
– and create a strategy to maximize them for the benefit of the organization. Are they aligned with
our principals and strategic plan? Are we using them to their fullest or are we wasting them? How can
we streamline and consolidate to free up resources for other uses? As Network Director and in my
professional life, I must constantly review the status quo and make adjustments as needed. Specifically,
who is the best Specialist for this chapter? What are the best practices for the creation, growth and
development of a new alumnae chapter? What is the right budget for this project given its projected
revenue? How will I as a manager delegate, empower and mentor my team for success?
3) GOVERNANCE AND STRATEGIC OVERSIGHT – As we hone the Policy Governance Model for our
Fraternity, I want to make sure we are not only executing this model correctly but that we are educating
our membership on the model and their roles within it. The Executive Board has the responsibility to
define the relationships between the Board our Volunteer Leaders and Executive Director/Staff. It’s
incumbent upon the Board to use the model’s framework to hold each group accountable.
I am a strategic, big-picture thinker. I do not micro-manage my team but neither do I put something in
motion and forget it. Policy Governance requires meaningful accountability and I am committed to the
idea that we must hold each other accountable. It can be messy business to decide the direction in
which we want AOII to go and where our ambitions lie. That process is at the heart of what an effective
Executive Board can and must do. Let’s INSPIRE that AMBITION.

KOREN PHILLIPS

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Phi Chi, University of Chicago
Boston Alumnae Chapter

New Hampshire Alumnae Chapter
18 Rhode Island Alumnae Chapter

Candidate Summary Statement:

The blessing and the burden of being an organization that has existed in continuity for nearly 125
years is remaining grounded in tradition while evolving with a future-forward perspective. These two
concepts may sound contrarian, but they are what I view as critical the future of AOII. History is a
vital concept in organizations such as ours. It provides a connection to the past and creates a solid
foundation upon which to build. Our future is what will ensure the continued vitality of our sisterhood.
We must, collectively, determine a path forward in forging connections with the past and future to ensure
our existence for the next 125 years. This strategic paradigm must be the foremost goal of not just an
International Vice President on the Executive Board, but the Executive Board in its entirety.
Today, more than ever, women need communities where we develop friendships, have the opportunity
to lead and to serve, and that ground us in a strong sense of belonging. AOII has the unique opportunity
to be this for the members of our organization – past, present, and future. Stella, Helen, Jessie, and
Bess were trailblazers; they were college women at a time that this was well outside the accepted norm.
They created for us an organization based on love and service. They were professionals, they were
progressives, they were big-picture thinkers who valued a strong community of women. These needs
and these perspectives are not so different from what women of today aspire to, whether they are first-
year college students or 75-year members.
My wish for AOII is that we will be an organization that inspires ambition in every single one of our
members and in the world around us. As a member of the Executive Board, I take to heart the call to lead
by example and believe this is one of the most critical goals and responsibilities of Board service. I aspire
to be a role model, a servant leader, a strong woman. We must model behavior from the top down to
build a framework and organizational culture, grounded in our culture principles, that all of our members
will embrace. I am grateful for my innate curiosity and work ethic. I bring my spirit of inquiry and passion
forward in my desire to advance AOII, which will be critical traits as we continue our work to ensure the
future existence and continued relevance of the sisterhood we all hold dear.
I am extraordinarily proud of the privilege of membership in Alpha Omicron Pi. I would welcome the
opportunity to support the continued advancement of our organization in collaboration with the 2019-
2021 Executive Board.

DEBBIE TAM

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Aurora, Colorado

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Beta Phi, Indiana University
Denver Alumnae Chapter

20

Candidate Summary Statement:

Looking ahead to the next biennium, my vision for the fraternity remains focused on providing an
exceptional experience to our membership, both collegians and alumnae. As we finish the transition to
operating totally under Policy Governance, I am very excited to see how this benefits our membership as
it allows the Executive Board more focus on it’s vision for our sisterhood.
This biennium, we have made significant progress in the implementation of Policy Governance and a
goal, if re-elected, would be to continue to support the implementation of this method of leadership.
I would also embrace the opportunity to further engage with our members as we work to provide an
experience that is not only exceptional but relevant to the wants and needs of our members. Hearing
what our members desire from our organization is vital to the development of board’s vision and policy
decisions as well as a key component of Policy Governance.
My experience in running a small business for nearly 25 years has provided me with a broad knowledge
base of skills relevant to Board service. Over the years I have served the fraternity at collegiate, alumnae,
and international volunteer levels. I feel this has given me a well-rounded understanding of what is
important and of value to our membership. At the same time, I understand that while our values remain
constant we need to allow and acknowledge the changes that keep our AOII journey relevant.
I believe our fraternity is positioned to make even stronger advances in the sharing of our sisterhood, our
values, our fraternal experience than ever before. Given the opportunity, I am eager to continue to serve
the fraternity and remain committed to working towards every member finding friendship and value in
her AOII experience.

JESSIE WANG-GRIMM

CANDIDATE FOR INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
Western Springs, Illinois

CHAPTER AFFILIATIONS:

Phi Chi, University of Chicago
Chicago West Suburban Alumnae Chapter

22

Candidate Summary Statement:

I am humbled by the opportunities AOII has given me, in this unparalleled period of expansion, dynamic
outreach, and exemplary service for our Fraternity. It has been an honor to partner with our remarkable
leaders to fulfill our Fraternity’s ambitious goals. I am an unabashed AOII cheerleader and strive to
connect with sisters of all ages. I now hope to put my diverse AOII, professional, community, and
Panhellenic leadership experiences, and my love of AOII, to work in the next biennium for our Executive
Board.
In line with the Fraternity’s strategic plan, my vision for AOII’s future centers on securing and sustaining
what we have grown, keeping our values forefront in our membership choices and actions, and
continuing to innovate in the Panhellenic arena.

• Securing and Sustaining AOII: We have experienced a period of remarkable, intentional growth,
reaching new heights in collegiate and alumnae involvement. The demand for financial and human
resources continues, so that we can meet the educational, housing, and leadership needs of our
chapters, and provide the advisory and training support required to cement these chapters for
the long term. I envision a financially secure future, one in which we can sustain those chapters we
have grown so well, with the means needed to provide that exceptional membership experience.
This requires our vigilant, conservative oversight of resources.

• Keeping AOII Values Forefront: In this age of ever-present social media and hazing concerns, AOII
values are paramount in all the choices our chapters make, from the members they choose to the
information they share about AOII. Risk must be managed if not substantially eliminated. I envision
a culture of value prioritization that informs every level of our AOII membership, to bring in and retain
quality members of diverse backgrounds and interests, keep our sisters safe, represent our highest
and best, and protect our legacy of living, learning, leading and service. We must reflect self-respect
and openness towards others.

• Innovation as Panhellenic Women: I envision AOII leading the NPC charge in both campus life and
their communities, finding new ways to advance sorority as an integral, positive driver for women
throughout their lives. We must relate sorority to today’s collegiate experience. There is much work to
be done in the areas of campus safety, retention of members, and advancing sorority, through focus
on building stronger women’s voices, developing even greater professional networks, and keeping
sorority service forefront in our members’ lives after graduation. I also want to see our alumnae
continuing to model excellence in leadership within AOII, NPC, and in their communities.

In terms of personal leadership qualities, I am a collaborator, motivator, and advocate. I believe that
my longstanding history of AOII engagement, diverse leadership background, and commitment to our
culture principles would allow me to contribute with both inspiration and impact as an International Vice
President.
