Questions with Kaya56 | Spring 2026In this age of soaring tuition costs, social media influencers earning millions, and a rise in high-paying tech jobs not requiring a bachelor’s degree, what remains the value of a four-year undergraduate education?I do believe deeply that the value of a four-year undergraduate education today goes far beyond the actual degree earned. For women especially, I think the value of a collegiate experience can also be measured in our personal growth and development – intellectually, professionally, and most notably, in the development of strong interpersonal relationships that enhance our lives. While alternatives like learning trades are extraordinarily valuable across North America, and though high-paying tech jobs and influencer careers may offer quicker financial returns, a college education provides something more enduring — critical thinking, adaptability, ethical reasoning, and an environment for personal growth. And of course, membership in AOII can take that college education from transactional to extraordinarily transformational.AOII’s Ends continue to provide a compass for why we are still relevant in such a rapidly changing higher education landscape. In an era where digital connections often replace real ones, AOII offers genuine, in-person sisterhood and a deep sense of belonging. Members build lasting relationships rooted in shared experiences, support, and accountability, which build connections that extend far beyond graduation. AOII also provides structured opportunities to lead, whether through service as a chapter officer, through our team approach to leadership roles, or mentoring younger members and Inspiring Ambition in all those around us. These experiences cultivate real-world leadership skills like confidence, communication, conflict resolution, and strategic thinking, which are skills that employers consistently value, regardless of your major or the degree you earn. At its core, AOII is grounded in principles of integrity, respect, lifelong learning, and personal responsibility. These values help shape members into leaders who are prepared to navigate complex professional and social environments with character and dignity. AOII’s commitment to serving others instills empathy and a sense of purpose, and reinforces the idea that success is not just measured by income, but by impact. Our current International President, Susan Bonifield, often uses one of my absolute favorite quotes from Mary Drummond, who served as AOII's International President from 1937-1939. Mary said: \"The world could get along without sororities, but it cannot get along without the ideals which these groups have taken for their own.\" In my mind, this illustrates the value of an undergraduate education and an exceptional AOII experience beyond any other gold standard.QUESTIONS FOR KAYAQ:A:Kaya Gerberich Miller, Gamma Theta (U of South Florida) has served as AOII’s Executive Director (ED) since January 2020 following 10 years in the role of Assistant Executive Director.
