It All Began More Than Three-Quarters
Of a Century Ago With Four Founders

Barnard College of Columbia University was the scene J a n . 2, 1877, of the founding of Alpha Omicron Pi Stella
by the four young ladies seen above. All glory to their names: Jessie Wallace Hughan, Elizabeth Heywood Wyman,
George Stern Perry and Helen St. Clair Mullan. Courageously independent in their thinking, discriminating in their
choice of objectives, logical in developing their ideas, and they were energetic in making them work.

$6,000 from A O I I . membership grew into an inter-
national organization, the need be-
came apparent to adopt a philan-
thropic project which offered possi-
bilities of service in every state
throughout the United States and in
Canada.

At the 1967 International Con-
vention, Council voted to discon-
tinue supporting the Frontier Nurs-
ing Service in the State of Kentucky
and to adopt the Arthritis Founda-
tion.

Since that time, A O I I has con-
tributed $40,500 on Research Fel-
lowships through the Arthritis
Foundation. The most current
award of $7,500, has gone to Dr.
Vera Byers, immunologist at the
University of California, San Fran-
cisco.

Her objective is to reestablish
tolerance in arthritics toward self
components in order to reduce the
severity of the disease.

Dr. Carol A . Smith, assistant professor of
medicine, Albert Einstein College of New
York, received $6,000 to pursue research.

Dr. Jane Schaller, assistant professor of pediatrics, University of Washington
School of Medicine, was awarded AOII's largest research grant to date, $13,000.
She poses with one of her young patients.

Dr. Naomi F. Rothfield, associate professor
of medicine and chief of rheumatology
section, University of Connecticut, received
a $5,000 A O I I fellowship.

Another recent recipient of a research
grant from A O I I , this time in the amount
of $3,000, Is Dr. H e n r i - A n d r e M e n a r d ,
a Canadian physician, seen here with one
of AOII's international officers, herself
a Canadian, and a youthful arthritis victim.
