Dear Mustang Community,

Welcome back to another

exciting and full year of

Mustang athletics and activities!

Given the unconventional nature

of this school year, maintaining

support and encouragement to

our programs will be more im-

portant than ever. One of our big-

gest goals as a school is to en-

gage students in extra-curricular

programs and help them under-

stand the importance of being

part of a community. Dedication

to this goal, coupled with the hard

work of our students, staff, and

parents, has produced the excel-

lent tradition of success shared

among all of our programs. While

championships and titles are great

validation of hard work, we value

the relationships and connections

made between our outstanding

young men and women repre-

senting our school. The wealth of

talent and diversity in our school

makes this such a special place, Left to Right: Cory Cox, Asst. Principal of Activities; Lisa Stolper, Asst. Principal of Curriculum &
and we are eager to share this Instruction; Kelli Kurle, Associate Principal of Athletics; Tyson Ostroski, Principal
with the world. It is what makes

us a Mustang Family!

It is our goal that Blue Valley North is not only a home to our students, but that you as a parent also
involve yourself with the North Community. A great way to do this is to join our Parent Booster Club.
The Blue Valley North Family would like to THANK the BVN Parent Booster Club for its continued sup-
port financially, as well as in their volunteer efforts. We simply would not be the successful school
that we are without the support of our PBC. I strongly encourage you to patronize the businesses
that advertise in this Activity Program and ask you to please join the Parent Booster Club as it direct-
ly impacts our students on a daily basis. Your ongoing involvement and support are essential to the
overall success of our school.

I look forward to seeing you all at our Mustang activities and games this year, and it is my honor to
cheer on our outstanding students.

Mustang Proud!

Tyson Ostroski, Principal
Blue Valley North High School

“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The oc-
casion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our
case is new, so must we think anew and act anew.”
—Abraham Lincoln, 1862

Dear BVN Community,

There’s no denying that we are living in a dramatic time of history that will be
studied and evaluated for decades if not centuries. It has been disruptive, and it has been costly. But, as a
“glass is half full” thinker, I tend to embrace times like this as opportunities to reexamine priorities, purposes and
ways of thinking, and watch for those glimmers of goodness, light, innovation and clarity that emerge.

One of the reasons that I love this quote from President Lincoln is that it calls upon us to think and act in new
ways and using new priorities and strategies. And, I’m proud to report that within days of the pandemic’s
surge, the PBC began thinking anew and acting anew. Here are a few examples:

 We raised and allocated over $3,500 to fund essential needs to help BVN families impacted by furloughs,
layoffs and lost business.

 We collaborated with our local businesses to sponsor and promote Mustang nights at places like Johnny’s
on 119th and Glenwood.

 We helped fund yard signs for the senior class of 2020 to congratulate them on their success after their
fourth quarter celebrations were cut short.

 We welcomed teachers back to the building with boxed lunches on August 18th. They were so surprised
and thankful for the act of gratitude.

 We fully funded yard signs to welcome our incoming Freshman class of 2024 to BVN.

But, here’s the thing. That kind of response is no surprise to anyone in our community because that is what the
PBC is known for and that is what we do. Since 2014, we have granted over $450,000 to support the programs
and activities that students love and that give so much back in terms of life lessons, experiences and friend-
ships fostered through participation and leadership.

Our Ask of You:

Please join us! Current circumstances make it difficult to volunteer real-time and in-person. Health and privacy
considerations restrict what we can/cannot do. So, for now, that leaves two primary areas for requests:

 Membership/Donations: I hate asking for money. But at the moment, the PBC needs contributions in order
to help our community. Membership is the easiest and best way to participate. We have five levels that
include added benefits. Please visit www.bvnmustangs.com, purchase your membership, add/update
your information and buy some spirit wear. Also, Upgrade your white level by emailing us at BVNPBCPresi-
[email protected] and we will provide a promo code to apply your current membership donation to a
higher level.

 Volunteer: We are a committed and fun group of parents who are committed to BVN and our students.
We are looking for more creative, committed and energetic minds to join us. We have several positions
available and multiple needs. Please sign up to volunteer at www.bvnmustangs.com or email your interest
to [email protected].

Moving forward, I challenge us all to be compassionate, creative and “out of the box” thinkers as we react to
current circumstances. Let’s find new ways to support one another and build community. Let us all, as Presi-
dent Lincoln said, “rise with the occasion.”

Thank you for supporting the PBC. Please reach out anytime with questions, comments and offers to help:

[email protected]. —Elizabeth Souder, 2020-21 PBC President

GOLF, BOYS
Coach Mark Turrentine

Years at BVN: 7th Year
Teaching Responsibilities: Blue Valley North Business Classes including
Entrepreneurship, Business Law, Branding & Selling, Advertising & Pro-
motion, Computer Applications, and Marketing Management. I also
teach Baker University SPGS classes in Marketing, Advertising, and Sales
Management.
Education/Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Western
Michigan University. MBA from The University of Kansas. High School
Varsity golfer and baseball player at Novi High School in Novi, MI. High
school baseball and golf coach for 13 years.
Coaching Philosophy: Make the game of golf fun and a great social
environment, and the boys will develop their skills and play better. Golf
is a lifetime sport that will be a big benefit to all players in the business
world and in their social lives as adults. Push the players that have the
talent to play at the next level to get ready for that experience and
help the ones for whom this will be their top level to enjoy their time to-
gether with the team.
Personal Information: Married to Suzanne who is a nurse at KU Medical Center. Two children both graduated
from college. My daughter Ally graduated from the University of Arkansas and is a Special Education teacher
in the Blue Valley School District and my son graduated from Missouri State University and is self-employed. I
also own an income tax preparation company called Turrentine & Associates.
Assistant Coach: Trent Hedlund
Season Outlook: As usual, I have high expectations for this group of boys. We lost a lot of key seniors from last
season, but we have some great returnees and some younger players who are ready to step up and com-
pete at the Varsity level. Last year we tied for the EKL Championship, placed second at Regionals, and fin-
ished second in 6A state, so repeating our success in the EKL and a high 6A state finish are my goals for this
season. These are lofty goals for sure, but that is what the program at Blue Valley North produces in Boys Golf
year after year.. Here’s to a great spring!
Senior Profiles: Connor Moore is a four-year Varsity player who is ready to have his best season yet and be a
solid leader on this team as a captain and probable #1 player on the team. Connor is a consistent good scor-
er who is prime to make a run at 1st team EKL and All-State. Kyle Dulle has recently signed to play college golf
at Ottawa University and is ready to play his first full tournament season as a Varsity player. I am expecting big
things from Kyle as his game has improved dramatically since his freshman year. Will Shertenlieb enters his sen-
ior year ready to make a name for himself at BVN as he was unable to play the last season due to COVID
canceling the 2020 season. There are definitely some spots to fill from last year so it is time for the seniors to
shine this Spring.

ORCHESTRA
Director Dr. Travis Hale

Years at BVN: 2

Education: BME – Music Education – Emporia State University
BSE – Speech Communication –

Emporia State University
MME – Music Education – Wichita State University
PhD – Curriculum and Instruction in Music

Education – Kansas State University

Teaching Philosophy: Each student brings a story to the class-
room, and it is my privilege to help those students discover their
story and voice through music. It is my hope to provide the ex-
periences and learning opportunities to shape student musi-
cians who can make musical decisions, perform with expres-
sion, and connect their musical experience to their life experiences. It is through music that the stu-
dents develop into empathetic and creative humans.

Personal Information: Married for 25 years to Nikki Hale,
RN at KU Med, and Doctoral student in the nurse
practitioner program at KU Med. Two children Max, 24
and William,19.

GIRLS SOCCER

Coach: Bryan Turner
Years at BVN: 3
Day Job Outside BVN: Owner of No Stress Midwest
(Soccer Training and Academic Tutoring Service)
Education/Qualifications: B.S. Mechanical Engineer-
ing: United States Soccer Federation (USSF) C License.
Coaching Philosophy: My approach to coaching is
much like taking on a new puzzle. Every player is different—mental, physical and emotional—and it
is my job as the coach to fit every piece together to make the puzzle complete. Player Develop-
ment is my primary goal on both the technical, and mental level. Becoming a better soccer player
starts with a basic love, respect, and understanding of the game and how it’s played. My second-
ary goal is coaching development and ensuring that I am doing everything on my end to become
a better coach. Through clinics, symposiums, licensing and experience, I am striving to be the best
coach that I can be to give each of my players the best soccer experience!
Personal Information: [email protected]
Season Outlook: This season will be a rebuilding one for us after losing a lot of big players last year in
the “stolen season”. We will be fielding a lot of first time varsity players but returning a large upper-
classwomen group of attacking players that should not have trouble putting the ball in the back of
the net. Our defense will have some big cleats to fill but I believe we have the right ladies within our
program to step in, step up, and leave their own mark on the program.

SWIM & DIVE-GIRLS

Coach: Rob Cole

Coach Cole starts his 39th year of coaching and still
loves the thrill of it. He has coached at every level.
Over the years Coach Cole has coached many high
school All-State, All-American, and club national
swimmers. His philosophy is, “From novice to elite, I
have a place for everyone.” Coach Cole has a high
school record of 423 -78. His teams have won ten
straight league titles, and the last thirteen out of fif-
teen. He also has been in the top five at state 14
years, with 17 league and six state titles.

This is Cole's fourth year at BV North. He is very excit-
ed to lead the Mustang Swim and Dive Program. He
teaches Physical Education at Our Lady of Hope in
KCMO. He is joined by assistant coach Abigale El-
yacharshuster and Amy Hanna.

Abigale Elyacharshuster started swimming at the
age of three, was on her first swim team at the age
of eight, and has also coached and taught swim-
ming since 2005. During Abigale's freshman year of
high school in Evanston, Illinois she made the swim team as well as the junior varsity and varsity water
polo teams. Before the start of her Sophomore year, she moved with her family to the Kansas City
area where she swam during the summers with the Kansas City Blazers and the Jets. Abigale then
went to Emporia State University and graduated with a bachelor's of integrated studies in 2009. Abi-
gale's swim coach experience includes assistant coaching with The Jets, Turner and with pre-
compete teams.

Amy Hanna grew up a competitive swimmer with the Kansas City Blazers, Shawnee Mission North-
west and Milburn Country Club. She went on to coach at Carriage Country Club and Indian Hills
Country Club for over 9 years. Most recently she started the girls high school swim programs at both
Mill Valley and DeSoto High School, before staying home for a year with her kids. She now enjoys
teaching Health and Nutrition Wellness. When she is not teaching, or coaching Amy enjoys raising
her three young kids. She is excited to get back to coaching high school swimming!

Shelly King will be in charge of Mustang Diving. Coach King has been teaching for 45 years and
coaching diving for over 50 years. She is currently teaching elementary PE in Shawnee Mission.

The coaching staff wants everyone to have fun, learn from new experiences and improve through-
out the season. We will strive to teach life skills through positive leadership by creating a program
that fosters character and integrity. As we “Stampede our Way to New Traditions,” our focus will be
on developing personal character for each individual on the team, competing at the highest level
and representing Blue Valley North with pride!

“I feel every swimmer and diver is on a collision course with greatness. They have to determine when
that greatness will happen.” Mustang Proud!

dent-athletes. These individuals have gone on to do many great things in their lives and one of my
most enjoyable experiences is when they check in with me and tell me the all the wonderful things
they've accomplished. Mustang Proud!

THEATER

Director Tanis Ham
Years at BVN: 1
Teaching Responsibilities:
Acting, Forensics, Repertory Theatre, Stagecraft
Education: BSE Speech and Theatre from University of Central
Missouri
Coaching Philosophy: Think outside of the box and be creative.
Theatre is a place to explore your passions while still having as
much fun as we can.
Personal Information: I became a dog mom to a silly, playful pup named Gidget during the pan-
demic and that was one of the best decisions we ever made. During the summer, you can find me
working the box office at Starlight Theater. I really enjoy having the opportunity to continue to be
surrounded by theatre and music all summer long.
Assistant Coaches: Travis Hale (Technical Director) and Jason Sickel (Music Director)

TRACK & FIELD

Coach: Mark Fancher

Years at BVN: 5
Teaching Responsibilities: US History, American Government,
World Geography
Education: Undergrad at Washburn University and Master’s
degree from University of Missouri in Positive Coaching and
Teaching.
Coaching Philosophy: Track and Field can benefit so many
different types of athletes and the sport itself can teach you
different life lessons. Many people think of track and field as
an individual sport, but really it's a team sport and every
point scored at a meet can make a huge impact. One of
my favorite coaching quotes is “Nobody cares how much
you know until they know how much you care.”
Personal Information: My wife Grace and I are both Kansas City natives, we are expecting our first
child in mid-March! I enjoy traveling and being outside. I like to stay active and compete in track
and field meets in the spring and summer. A fun fact about me is that I am a Guinness Book of World
Record Holder for the “World’s Fastest Relay Marathon” completed in June 2018.
Assistant Coaches: Rick Byers, Michael Clardy, Jeremy Chugg, Brittany Kallenberger, Alyssa Kelly,
Kiah Kollman, Travis Vanderberg, Miles Riley, Hannah Rutherford, Greg Slade, Jeremy Winzer.
Season Outlook: The last time our athletes competed for BVN track and field they were underclass-
men, now they are upperclassmen and will be looking to lead our team. We are recruiting the BVN
hallways and other sports to fill a large team. Athletes have been working hard already in the off-
season and are hungry for a full season and opportunity to compete. Many athletes will have their
goals set high to reach the State Championships down in Wichita.
