Dear Mustang Community,
Welcome back to another
exciting and full year of
Mustang athletics and activities!
Given the unconventional nature
of this school year, maintaining
support and encouragement to
our programs will be more im-
portant than ever. One of our big-
gest goals as a school is to en-
gage students in extra-curricular
programs and help them under-
stand the importance of being
part of a community. Dedication
to this goal, coupled with the hard
work of our students, staff, and
parents, has produced the excel-
lent tradition of success shared
among all of our programs. While
championships and titles are great
validation of hard work, we value
the relationships and connections
made between our outstanding
young men and women repre-
senting our school. The wealth of
talent and diversity in our school
makes this such a special place, Left to Right: Cory Cox, Asst. Principal of Activities; Lisa Stolper, Asst. Principal of Curriculum &
and we are eager to share this with Instruction; Kelli Kurle, Associate Principal of Athletics; Tyson Ostroski, Principal
the world. It is what makes us a
Mustang Family!
It is our goal that Blue Valley North is not only a home to our students, but that you as a parent also
involve yourself with the North Community. A great way to do this is to join our Parent Booster Club.
The Blue Valley North Family would like to THANK the BVN Parent Booster Club for its continued sup-
port financially, as well as in their volunteer efforts. We simply would not be the successful school
that we are without the support of our PBC. I strongly encourage you to patronize the businesses
that advertise in this Activity Program and ask you to please join the Parent Booster Club as it direct-
ly impacts our students on a daily basis. Your ongoing involvement and support are essential to the
overall success of our school.
I look forward to seeing you all at our Mustang activities and games this year, and it is my honor to
cheer on our outstanding students.
Mustang Proud!
Tyson Ostroski, Principal

“The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present. The oc-
casion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our
case is new, so must we think anew and act anew.”
—Abraham Lincoln, 1862
Dear BVN Community,
There’s no denying that we are living in a dramatic time of history that will be
studied and evaluated for decades if not centuries. It has been disruptive, and it has been costly. But, as a
“glass is half full” thinker, I tend to embrace times like this as opportunities to reexamine priorities, purposes and
ways of thinking, and watch for those glimmers of goodness, light, innovation and clarity that emerge.
One of the reasons that I love this quote from President Lincoln is that it calls upon us to think and act in new
ways and using new priorities and strategies. And, I’m proud to report that within days of the pandemic’s
surge, the PBC began thinking anew and acting anew. Here are a few examples:
We raised and allocated over $3,500 to fund essential needs to help BVN families impacted by furloughs,
layoffs and lost business.
We collaborated with our local businesses to sponsor and promote Mustang nights at places like Johnny’s
on 119th and Glenwood.
We helped fund yard signs for the senior class of 2020 to congratulate them on their success after their
fourth quarter celebrations were cut short.
We welcomed teachers back to the building with boxed lunches on August 18th. They were so surprised
and thankful for the act of gratitude.
We fully funded yard signs to welcome our incoming Freshman class of 2024 to BVN.
But, here’s the thing. That kind of response is no surprise to anyone in our community because that is what the
PBC is known for and that is what we do. Since 2014, we have granted over $450,000 to support the programs
and activities that students love and that give so much back in terms of life lessons, experiences and friend-
ships fostered through participation and leadership.
Our Ask of You:
Please join us! Current circumstances make it difficult to volunteer real-time and in-person. Health and privacy
considerations restrict what we can/cannot do. So, for now, that leaves two primary areas for requests:
Membership/Donations: I hate asking for money. But at the moment, the PBC needs contributions in order
to help our community. Membership is the easiest and best way to participate. We have five levels that
include added benefits. Please visit www.bvnmustangs.com, purchase your membership, add/update
your information and buy some spirit wear. Also, Upgrade your white level by emailing us at BVNPBCPresi-
[email protected] and we will provide a promo code to apply your current membership donation to a
higher level.
Volunteer: We are a committed and fun group of parents who are committed to BVN and our students.
We are looking for more creative, committed and energetic minds to join us. We have several positions
available and multiple needs. Please sign up to volunteer at www.bvnmustangs.com or email your interest
to [email protected].
Moving forward, I challenge us all to be compassionate, creative and “out of the box” thinkers as we react to
current circumstances. Let’s find new ways to support one another and build community. Let us all, as Presi-
dent Lincoln said, “rise with the occasion.”
Thank you for supporting the PBC. Please reach out anytime with questions, comments and offers to help:

BVN BANDS
Director: Dan Freeman
Hello BVN Band!
WOW - What. A. Beginning! I'm mentally spent, as I'm sure
many of our students (and parents) are. The new reality
of virtual school layered with in-person (but meeting virtu-
ally) school is challenging for all of us.
But...
I'm also energized, and much more excited than I have
been in months!! Students - THANK YOU for a good start
to the school year. Zoomband is strange, but it's also
been WONDERFUL to see your faces on the brady-bunch-
tiled screen. It's been food for my soul. One thing is for
sure after this week: it's going to be a year like no oth-
er. (And, for the first time in about 6 months, I say that
with an excited tone!!).
Also - I must give a huge WELCOME to all of the new stu-
dents in our band! Each year, we are generally fortunate
with our move-in students... but this year we definitely
struck the move in lottery!! We are excited to welcome
new students to BVN and our BVN band family from California, Utah, Ohio, and Hong Kong. We also
have new members of our color guard who have been a delight to work with. And, our new 9th
grade class is going to be a phenomenal one - I can already tell, even virtually. It's going to be a
wonderful year in the band, whatever happens!
I would like to announce the MUSTANG ATHLETIC BAND! (which I'm lovingly callin "the MAB"). We
have been given the
go ahead to form
the Mustang Athletic
Band - a group that
will perform at some
fall events. WE'RE
GETTING THE BAND
BACK TOGETHER!
Back to what I start-
ed with... THANK YOU
STUDENTS! Seeing
you has re-energized
me, and I am defi-
nitely excited to be
moving again!! Look-
ing forward to a fan-
tastic year!!

NORTH STARS DANCE
Coach: Kylie Thompson
Years at BVN: First year / New to BVN
Teaching Responsibilities/Day Job Outside BVN: Spanish Teacher
at Sunrise Point Elementary
Education/Qualifications: I received a Bachelor of Science in Ed-
ucation and a minor in Dance from the University of Kansas. I be-
gan dancing competitively at the age of 6, was a 4 year mem-
ber on the Gretna High School Dance Team, and continued
dancing throughout college. I was a member of the Rock Chalk
Dancers at KU for 4 years and held leadership positions within the
University Dance Company for the School of Arts.
Coaching Philosophy: To coach a dance team means so much
more than helping girls reach their fullest potential as dancers
and athletes. It is my goal to help these athletes set high standards for themselves as dancers as well
as students and young adults. There is so much room for growth in being part of a team between
collaboration, leadership, confidence, and trust, so my hope is for the members of our team to be-
come proud of who they are in every aspect as individuals.
Personal Information: Being a recent graduate, I am beyond excited to be on the other side of a
team and have the opportunity to learn from these 16 incredible young women. I cherish my rela-
tionships with friends and family more than anything. I absolutely love to travel to experience new
perspectives and ideas, and you will never hear me say no to iced coffee!
Assistant Coaches: Bethany Long, DC. -Thrive KC Chiropractic & Family Wellness
Team Info/Season Outlook: We have a strong group of 16 dancers this year: 3 seniors, 6 juniors, 4
sophomores, and 3 freshmen. Although there is a lot of uncertainty about what is to come this sea-
son, these girls have already demonstrated their
dedication to this team through the several ob-
stacles so far. The North Stars are looking forward
to performing at home football games, girls and
boys basketball games, and school & communi-
ty events regardless of what that may look like
this year. We are going to do what we do best.
Go Mustangs!
Senior Profiles: We have three seniors this year:
Kelsie Fisher, Emily Grice, and Addi Miller. They
are all 4th year members of the North Stars
Dance Team and demonstrate so much passion
for this team. We are lucky to have them and
know they will go on to do wonderful things!

The Mustangs have
11 playoff wins, a
Conference Cham-
pionship, a District
Championship, 3 Regional Championships, 2 Sectional
Championships, a State Runner-Up and the 6-A State
Championship. Coach Sims was recognized as the Kansas
6-A Coach of The Year, The Kansas City Coach of The Year,
The Community of Coaches Coach of The Year and was
named the Don Fambrough Coach of The Year. With one
more win, Coach Sims will become the Mustangs’ All-Time
winningest Head Coach.
Coaching Philosophy: Sims implemented a unique system
that focused on college readiness centered around three
key aspects: Football Intelligence, Academic Essentials and
Athletic Development. The plan has certainly paid off. To
date the Mustangs have produced 33 college players (11
D1, 16 D2, 6 JC) who have earned over $1.5 million in foot-
ball scholarships. 103 All-Conference players, 12 All-State, 10
All-Metro, 3 Simone Finalists, 1 Otis Taylor Winner, 1 Simone
Winner, 1 All-American, and 1 Gatorade Player of The Year.
In the classroom, the Mustangs boast over a 3.0 GPA. Ac-
cording to Sims, “If a player cannot be disciplined in their
academic endeavors then they have zero chance of
reaching their full potential as an athlete. The discipline it
takes to be a great student is the exact quality that helps
you win in the 4th quarter.” The Mustangs have produced a
staggering 160 Academic All-Conference Players and
3 National Merit Finalists.

Rick Wasinger, Trent Hedlund, Edrick Rouse, Mike Clardy,

Coach: Mark Turrentine
Years at BVN: 7th Year
Teaching Responsibilities: Blue Valley North Business Classes including
Entrepreneurship, Business Law, Branding & Selling, Advertising & Pro-
motion, and Marketing Management. I teach Baker University SPGS
classes in Marketing, Advertising, and Sales Management. I own a
personal income tax preparation company called Turrentine &
Associates.
Education: Bachelors Degree in Business Management from Western
Michigan University. MBA from the University of Kansas. Secondary
Education Teaching License from Baker University.
Coaching Philosophy: Make the game of golf fun and a great social
environment and the girls will develop their skills and play better.
Golf is a lifetime sport that will be a big benefit to all players in the
business world and in their social lives as adults.
Personal Information: Married to Suzanne who is a nurse at KU Medical Center. Two children both graduated
from college. My daughter Ally graduated from the University of Arkansas and is a Special Education teacher
in the Blue Valley School District and my son graduated from Missouri State University works for Deluxe Printing.
Assistant Coach: Janet Lierz
Season Outlook: I think that this team has some potential to mature into a competitive squad. We graduated
three seniors who played on our top 10 6A state squad but some girls made significant progress last season
and over the summer. Our success should not totally be judged by winning but if the girls want to score well
they will have to put out extra effort during practice time. My consistent goal is for the girls to improve and en-
joy playing as a team with their fellow classmates. Our team may be a sleeper in the EKL Conference, and we
hope to surprise some teams and succeed in the 6A State Tournament.
Senior Profiles: Caitlyn Moore is a 4-year Varsity player who will be our #1 player this season. Caitlyn has a very
consistent game and she is drawing interest from various college programs across the country, Grace Plunkett
will be completing her second year at the Varsity level and she has consistently improved every season on the
team. Grace played a lot of golf this summer and I am expecting some solid scores from her this season. Yas-
mine Kazimi will also be completing her second year at the Varsity level and has had some great competitive
rounds during her tenure. Yasmine seem to really like the game of golf and should also be a consistent scorer
for us this season.

Education/Qualifications: B.S. Mechanical Engineer-

Coaching Philosophy: My approach to coaching is
much like taking on a new puzzle. Every player is different both mental, physical and emotional and
it is my job as the coach to fit every piece together to make the puzzle complete. Player Develop-
ment is my primary goal on both the technical, and mental level. Becoming a better soccer player
starts with a basic love, respect, and understanding of the game and how it’s played. My second-
ary goal is coaching development and ensuring that I am doing everything on my end to become
a better coach. Through clinics, symposiums, licensing and experience, I am striving to be the best
coach that I can be to give each of my players the best soccer experience!

SEASON OUTLOOK: Our girls’ tennis team has a strong core of returning players and some talented new fresh-

Team Info/Season Outlook: We are very excited for this season. We return half of our team and the
majority of our offense that won sub-state and finished 4th at State in 2019. This is a very dedicated
and high-achieving team both in the classroom and in the gym. We strongly feel we can improve
on last season's success. These girls have a state title on their minds. Our upperclassmen have wel-
comed our underclass girls which includes a sophomore and two freshmen. Should be another
great season for the Mustangs!
