Paradise Kids ... Since 1996

About Us...

Paradise Kids is a children's charity founded by Deirdre Hanna and Rev. Dr Ian Mavor OAM, who both believed in the need to to help children
dealing with grief and loss through death, divorce, domestic violence, illness, separation or trauma through grievous losses. The first Paradise
Kids group was held in 1996, since then, various programs have been developed and implemented to successfully help countless children and
their families. Paradise Kids is located at 88 Allied Drive in Arundel on the Gold Coast and provides a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for both
children and their parents. Over the years Paradise Kids has formed many partnerships, working closely with schools, community groups, police
and other not for profits to ensure vulnerable children get the help they need and deserve.

 What We Do...

Paradise Kids aims to heal the heartache. This emphasis on 'heart work' means we take a holistic approach to address all aspects of the child:
body, mind and spirit. We believe that this offers solid life skills allowing the child to move forward in life with the ability to face the future through
the understanding of their feelings, the restoration of confidence and resilience to sustain them in times of change. Primary among these skills is
a growth in empathy towards others, and the ability to be aware of and express their own feelings in healthy and creative ways.

Each child participating in one of our group programs is assigned a "buddy" that works to form a connection with their child whilst applying these
interventions, empowering them to move on in life. PK Buddies support each child by reminding them they are strong and powerful with wise and
creative inner resources that can be applied when needed. Our specialised programs are run throughout the year over the four school terms.
While the children are attending their program, parents and caregivers have their own support groups available. Parents and caregivers gain
knowledge and understanding whilst being strengthened and refreshed which is vitally important. Our programs and services have been
developed to strengthen parent/child relationships and care for families during a hard part of their life journey.

Our Mission & Values...

Paradise Kids "helps heal the heartache" of children and families dealing with grief, loss or illness by providing support groups, counselling and

educational programs that focus on learning from the painful experience so that those involved gain life skills and new confidence to 2
meet future challenges. Our Values: Respect * Integrity * Authenticity * Growth

Our Founding History...

Deirdre Hanna is Co-founder of Hopewell Hospice Services Inc. in 1994, which included Hopewell Hospice, Paradise Kids, Hopewell Education
Services and The Living Well Respite Centre.

Deirdre had a vision of a Hospice on the Gold Coast after a ‘Voice’ called her in the night telling her to ‘find out about Cicely Saunders.’ Deirdre
then read Dame Cicely’s biography and realised that working with death and dying was also to be her own life vocation. Dame Cicely Saunders
started St Christopher’s Hospice in London in 1968 and Deirdre was profoundly inspired by this woman of vision. She read books about Cicely
Saunders and St Christopher’s Hospice, as well as On Death and Dying by Elisabeth Kübler Ross and knowing that this was to be her ministry,
studied the Ecumenical Hospice Chaplain’s Program as part of her Theology Degree at St Francis’ College in Brisbane.

Deirdre worked as an Anglican Chaplain in The Royal Brisbane Hospital and then as an Ecumenical Chaplain in the Gold Coast Hospital’s
Palliative Care Ward. She noticed that many people had no choice of where to spend their final days of life, other than in a hospital setting. Thus
the concept of starting a hospice on the Gold Coast as an alternative place in which to die was born. With her husband and partner Rev. Dr Ian
Mavor, they set about bringing the dream of a place of hospitality and compassionate loving care at the end stage of life’s journey into a reality.
Deirdre’s first step in actualizing the dream was to call together a small group of committed people in October 1993 to discuss the hospice
philosophy and the need for a building in which to house it. In March 1994, Hopewell Hospice Services Inc became an Incorporated Association
with 30 members. Deirdre was Founding President, Ian was Secretary of the Charity and some friends became Committee Members.

The name ‘Hopewell’ was given to Deirdre in a dream and comes from her strong Christian faith and ‘Hope’ in the resurrection that, even after
death, life continues in some form. The name also incorporates the ‘Well’ of Living Water from which to drink so that we need never be thirsty for
Love again, and about which Jesus spoke. In 1994, they purchased a property called Glory Farm, in Sickle Avenue on Hope Island. This
contained a house with two attached flats. and became the Gold Coast’s first free-standing community hospice, called Hopewell
Hospice. The synchronicities of the names delighted Hopewell’s members.

As a result of this initiative, Deirdre received a Churchill Fellowship in 1995 to study Spiritual Care of Cancer Patients. This took her to 17 different

hospices in Great Britain and North America to study best practices in palliative care, where she finally met Cicely Saunders at St Christopher’s

Hospice. Deirdre studied there for a 5-day multi-disciplinary course in Palliative Care. While travelling she then heard her ‘Voice’ again and was

called to begin caring for children affected by the death of a parent or sibling or other major grief life event. 4

The Paradise Kids Grief, Loss and Illness Programs were developed by Deirdre in 1996 as her Churchill Fellowship travels included attending an
International Conference on Children and Death held in Canada. She brought back into Australia the best of children’s grief courses and adapted
them to suit the local culture, drawing also on William Worden’s Tasks of Mourning and her interests in children’s physical, emotional and spiritual
health and well-being.

The first Paradise Kids groups were held in various places for the first few years until it became possible to rent a building in the Allied Drive
Community Precinct in Arundel. This venue was then purchased from another charity to become the first Paradise Kids House. For several years,
the Support Services and Counselling Services were provided in that building, with some 270 children receiving the services of the Support
Groups each year.

In 2005, the new Hopewell Hospice was opened adjacent to Paradise Kids on the same site. Then, with generous support from our ambassador,
Betty Vaggelas and others in our community, planning commenced to build a new venue for Paradise Kids on an adjoining vacant block, and this
was completed late in 2008. The new building contains seven counselling rooms, including family counselling and parent support; two children’s
group support rooms; a large seminar room for training programs and workshops; four administration offices and the Simply Divine Café for tea,
coffee and lunches and snacks. It was then possible to renovate the older building to create the beautiful Paradise Kids Holiday House in order to
provide accommodation to assist families with sick children from further afield, such as rural and remote areas, to receive the help they need in
difficult times.

Rev. Dr Ian Mavor shared with Deirdre Hanna in the founding of Hopewell Hospice Services Inc. and has served as Secretary of the Association
since 1994. He was Executive Director of Hopewell Hospice Services Inc. from 2004 until his death in 2015, Ian had been Principal Education
Officer for Education Queensland when Hopewell started, and then Executive Director of Lifeline Gold Coast. He has also served as a member of
the Health Community Council of the Gold Coast Health District and of the State Council of Palliative Care Queensland.

In 2002, Ian was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) “For service to the community through a range of church, social welfare,
education and health groups”. Sadly in 2015, Ian passed away but his wonderful compassionate legacy continues to this day. In 2016, Deirdre
formed the Ian Mavor Foundation in honour of her late husband and his life's work.

In September of 2018, Hopewell Hospice Services Inc. merged with Wesley Mission Queensland. This new merger will open up the potential for

future growth and expansion. Deirdre will remain and is thrilled with the organisation’s new direction. Of the merger, Deirdre stated: "If someone

had asked us 25 years ago when we started, where we would want to be in 25 years, I would have said right here with Wesley

Mission Queensland ... Hopewell and Wesley Mission share similar faith-based values and service delivery and are a 5
wonderful fit."

Grief & Loss Support Program...

The Grief & Loss Support Program was our first program and remains our core program. This is for children aged 6 to 11, experiencing grief and
loss from traumatic situations at a young age be it through a death, illness, family separations and other big changes. At this stage of
development children often feel the loss is their ‘fault'.

Our Program provides a supportive space for children to express their feelings, including their anger. With peer sharing and support, their grief is
‘normalised’ and they no longer feel alone. Children are helped to grow through their grief by using a mixture of story-telling, art activities,
movement & music, breath work, stress reduction exercises, anger-management and mindfulness. They learn inner life skills to help with the
healing process of grief and also to deal with future loss and change. Teamed with their very own PK Buddy, each child is given individualised
support through their seven-week journey. A separate Parents Group provides support for parents and caregivers to address their own grief
along with how to provide support for their child through the process.

The sessions are designed to help children tell their stories and express their feelings about the loss in a safe way.
Over seven weekly sessions, the children learn to:

Gain an understanding of the event as a loss.
Tell the story to facilitate discussion about the loss.
Grieve the loss and feel the feelings.
Physically and creatively express strong feelings including anger.
Deal with any "unfinished business" around the loss.
Affirm and commemorate the loss, and look forward to the future.
Claim a new sense of self and feel empowered to move on.

Both the children and their parents learn to accept the reality of the loss, feel the feelings in a safe way,
commemorate the loss and move to a higher sense of esteem and resilience. This approach normalises the grief process, gives insights into
the tasks of mourning, and teaches life skills and resilience that help prevent ongoing physical and emotional health problems from
unresolved grief.

Cost: $25.00

Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT)...

Two to six-year-old little ones can enjoy Child-Centred Play Therapy. It is a non-intrusive and effective approach when working with young
troubled or pre-verbal children. Play is important for children because it is the most natural way for children to communicate. Toys are like their
words and play is their language. Children use toys to explore their inner world and express their experiences and feelings. This gentle, non-
directive and non-judgemental therapy method is used to help children communicate their inner experiences. It is based on the belief that children
have the internal drive to achieve wellness. These one and a half hour group play sessions provide a supportive and nurturing environment
allowing each child the freedom to explore, express and process their inner world. Parents attend their own support group while their child is in
our play therapy group.

Individual play therapy sessions for children are available by appointment. During play therapy, we aim to help the child feel they are understood,
accepted, important, valuable and capable. Then, the child may start playing out many of their problems and in the process, they release
tensions, feelings, and burdens. As a result, the child will feel better about themselves and will be able to discover their own strengths and learn
greater self-responsibility. As they take charge of play for themselves, they will behave in more self-enhancing ways rather than self-defeating
ways.

In these special playtimes, there is no evaluations, requirements or specific directions, judgements or criticisms. It is effective with children
experiencing ... Grief and Loss; Separation or Divorce; Trauma; Chronic Illness; Abuse and/or Neglect; Anger and /or Fear; Shyness; Bonding
and Attachment Issues.

Child-Parent Relationship Training (CPRT)...

Child-Parent Relationship Training (CPRT) is a parenting training program designed to help strengthen the relationship between you and your
child. This program helps parents & carers learn the principles of Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT) and apply them in their everyday lives.

Through this parenting program, parents & carers are taught skills
on how to build a different kind of relationship with their children by
using play, allowing them to freely express themselves in their own
way & pace. Parents & carers learn the skills on how to focus on
your child, their feelings & their strengths rather than focusing on
the problems & issues. This helps children to feel better about
themselves and causes them to react differently, leading to
a significant difference in their behaviours. With this training, it will
be much easier for parents & carers to set limits & boundaries in
daily life when required.

This program is for all parents and caregivers who have children
attending our programs with two options available. Parents can
attend the training program by themselves or if they have a child or
children aged from 2 to 6, you are welcome to bring them along.
The child/children will attend our concurrent Play Therapy Group
while the parent attends CPRT training.

Our senior counsellor, Tomoko Sakai facilitates the Child-Parent
Relationship Training and trains all Buddies who work alongside
her in CCPT and CPRT.

Buddy Corner

Be a Buddy

Paradise Kid's Buddies support children
to explore, understand and safely express
feelings about their grief and loss.

Buddies play a key role in the Paradise Kids
Grief and Loss Support Program as a
member of the team providing individual
support for each child in the group.

Buddy Prerequisites:
Grief & Loss Buddy Training
WHS and Fire Safety Training
Blue Care Card / Police Check

Buddy Training Offered:
Three times per year

Paradise Kids Buddies...

The Paradise Kids ‘Buddy’ role is to support children to explore, understand, and express safely their feelings about their loss. Our team 'pairs up'
a suitable buddy with each child attending the programs. Our program uses a mixture of story, art, music, meditation, discussion, movement,
guided imagery, and breathing to learn stress reduction exercises. A buddy works each week with the same child in a group setting. Our PK
Buddies must be prepared to sign up to work with children over seven weeks in the after-school program on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon or
of a Saturday morning for one or more terms a year.

The process of becoming a buddy takes time. Buddies first meet with our volunteer coordinator, Margo Amundsen for an informal discussion,
then undertake all mandatory training and checks. Paradise Kids provides required training and the required blue card and checks for our buddies
free of charge. This helps ensure the quality of service and duty of care to those families entrusting us with their child whilst participating in our
programs.

Grief & Loss Buddy Training...

Grief & Loss Training is presented by our PK Founder, Deirdre Hanna and is offered three times a year. The main purpose is to competently train
a volunteer in the role of a PK Buddy and it is the prerequisite training for working as a buddy with Paradise Kids. This experiential training
provides skills to help children and adults make creative choices in dealing with grief, loss and illness and helps participants become more aware
of the importance of healing their own grief. The training will benefit social workers, teachers, chaplains, nurses, counsellors, health professionals
and others working with children.

Topics in the course include: 27

The grieving process in adults and children.
Impacts of childhood grief on adult life and health.
Developing an understanding of death in children.
Separations, divorce and other life transitions.
The transformative potential of grief, the power of attitude and
motivation in dealing with life crises.
Listening with empathy & communication skills.
Paradise Kids Program and your role as a 'buddy'.

CCPT Buddies...

CCPT Buddy training is especially for those wanting to work with children aged 2 to 5 years by being a buddy in our Child-Centred Play Therapy
Group on Thursday Mornings. They must have first completed our Grief and Loss Buddy Training and be actively working as a PK Buddy to be
considered for CCPT Buddy Training.

Child-Centred Play Buddies are trained to trust that children are capable of directing their own process rather than having ideas of what the child
needs to do in therapy, imposed on them. Child-Centred Play Therapy requires the therapist to enter the emotional world of the child rather than
expecting the child to understand the therapist’s world. CCPT Buddies are trained to respond emphatically to children’s feelings, build children’s
self-esteem, help children learn self-control and self-responsibility. CCPT Buddies are trained by our Senior Counsellor, Tomoko Sakai.

CCPT Buddies also work within our CPRT program as the two programs run concurrently.

Male Role Models...

Our Boys' Group requires Male Role Models. Paradise Kids believes that it is very important for boys to interact with kind-hearted men of high
integrity. It is how a boy learns to become a good man. Each week, the boys participate in activities that challenge them to grow in self-control
and earn trust through the power of keeping their word. The boys learn strategies and skills for dealing with conflict in a non-aggressive manner.
The Boys' Group is fun and active, brimming with activities.

The men who work with the boys come from all areas of life and include tradesmen, professionals, students as well as men who have retired.
What they do have in common is personal integrity and a commitment to supporting boys to grow into good men. The men model a form of
masculinity that demonstrates strength, integrity, compassion and respect.

Paradise Kids on the lookout for mature minded men from all walks of life to model a form of masculinity that demonstrates strength, integrity,
compassion and respect while working in a group setting with boys, aged 8 to 11. Male Role Models need to have a current Blue Card and be
available each Friday afternoon over a six week period.

Our recurring goal is to recruit and retain more Male Role Models of different ages and backgrounds to provide a well-rounded 28
group of men for the boys to interact with and relate to.
