ABSTRACT
Science and technology is recognized as important medium to lead Malaysia become a
developed country. In this field, the hands-on skills are much needed in addition to the theory
given in the class. However, one of the concerns commonly addressed related to the laboratory
activity among university students is the safety issues during the learning activities in the
laboratory. Higher concerns particularly emphasized for high hazardous lab, such as the lab
involved with microbial, chemical, explosive-type of experiments. Although this concern has
been highlighted by the Ministry of Health Malaysia in Guidelines 2015 Malaysia Laboratory
Biosafety and Biosecurity Policy, the level of awareness on laboratory safety among the
university students are not clearly known due to lack of reports on the matter. Thus, the
objective of this study is to measure the level of students’ awareness on laboratory safety
focusing on work procedure among foundation students in IIUM. An online questionnaire
comprising ten questions regarding the awareness on laboratory safety measures was
distributed among students of Biology 1 program session 2020/2021 from Center for
Foundation Studies (CFS), IIUM through online platform (Google form). A total of 343
responses were obtained, where the results were descriptively analyzed using SPSS 25.0
software. Results of this study show that the overall level of students’ awareness on laboratory
safety for work procedure is at high level with average mean value is 4.1, (the highest value is
5 marks indicating highest level of awareness). This finding suggest that the existing measures
in CFS IIUM to enhance awareness of laboratory safety is at an adequate level. This is aligned
with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on “quality education” which is to build up a
University practice that would strengthen students’ learning experience through cultivation of
a sustainable well-being environment.

ABSTRACT
It is arguable that corpus-based approach has been gaining a lot of attention from
language experts and linguists over the past four decades. This is due to the fact that
corpus-based approach has opened up many research ideas and positive
perspectives that are deemed to be essential in all branches of languages and
linguistics (Leech, 1997). Linguists from all over the world especially from the
developed and developing countries have started to use corpora as a medium to
incorporate language teaching in class. Malaysia is not excluded. However, this paper
aims to look at the issues that surround teaching and learning English in Malaysia and
attempts to overcome this problem by using the corpus-based approach utilizing the
corpora. The problems that are to be addressed in this study is vocabulary learning
besides identifying undesirable trends on misuse of vocabularies faster and try to fix
them. Thus, by focusing to improve on the usage of vocabularies, students will be able
to accurately use English vocabularies and this corpus-driven account will be able to
show the trend and highlight all the mistakes done by students in relation to the
targeted vocabulary. Therefore, the use of corpora will begin to diversify and research
questions will extend beyond the usual and ordinary concerns to include learner
language specifically in teaching and learning.

ABSTRACT
The pandemic crisis of COVID-19 has made e-learning mandatory in all Malaysia’s educational
institutions including Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS), IIUM. In light to this phenomenon,
this research is carried out to evaluate the student’s perception on the quality and effectiveness of
the online Physics Laboratory delivery at CFS, IIUM. The subject of this research is the students
that are enrolled for Physics 1 and 2 in Semester 2, 2020/2021. This research utilized a quantitative
method by giving questionnaires to the students using the Quizizz platform involving 325 students.
The lab sessions were based on group work and the report submitted per group one day later. The
findings of this research revealed that 85.4% of the students are satisfied with the quality of the
lab materials. Narrowing down the students' perception on the laboratory material provided, 85.8%
of the students agreed that it was easy to understand and 89.5 % agreed that the information given
is clear. These above 80% agreements showed that the quality of the given material is qualified
for online learning. Understanding data tabulation is an important step in the process of data
analysis. And 78.2% are agreeing that they now have the ability to tabulate experimental data on
their own. In terms of completing the laboratory report, only 65% agree that it is easy to compile
and submit the report. This is perhaps due to the analysis activity that had to be done in a group
consisting approximately 4 members. They had to do online discussion, delegating tasks between
one another, handwritten every part of the laboratory report, compiled their task and finally handed
it over online. Though the process is long, 91.4% agree that they have enough time to complete
the lab report. The survey result shows that learning physics laboratory through online medium is
possible and effective. In future, it is recommended that the online physics laboratory learning
should be improvise especially in variation of data given to students for achieving good quality in
student performance and assessment.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the higher learning institutions including the
Centre for Foundations Studies had shifted to the remote teaching and learning method. It was
the first experience of lecturers and students with full online method, which has been both
positive and challenging. It is unfortunate that the stakeholders do not have a clear precedent
on how to deal with this new norm and they were left with no choice but to embrace it.
Regardless of the method on dealing with the classes and assessment, one cannot put aside the
importance to humanize education. Education primarily aims at producing students with good
values that can later contribute to the betterment of the society. Education should not be seen
as a factory producing human machine that can do work without the element of human touch.
In Islam, education is seen as one of the mechanisms to produce a better Muslim who knows
the purpose of his existence in this world. Seeking knowledge is one of the ways to protect the
intellect (which is one of the Maqasid Shariah). This paper aims to find out the student’s
perspective on online learning. It seeks to relates how this method affects the protection of the
intellect propounded under the principles of Maqasid Shariah. Does online method of teaching
and learning demotivate the students in seeking knowledge? In reaching the objective, a survey
will be conducted among the law students in Semester 2 (20/21) to find out their perspective
on online learning. This paper also adopts a content analysis approach in examining relevant
points and data online teaching and learning.

ABSTRACT
Since 2018, the University has vigorously geared its direction towards Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs). With the introduction of Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF)
in 2020, the University expects all KCDIOs to manifest it in their practices. Echoing this, the
Department of Languages and Management (LMD) agreed to include SDG elements in one
of the assessments of its new subject, Presentation Skills. The students were tasked to choose
one of SDGs for their group presentation. The main objective of this poster is to share some
insights gained from the previous semester when SDGs are concerned. To do so, we plan to
1) analyse overall student performance across the four programs under LMD, 2) find out the
common SDG topics selected by students and perhaps to 3) have the teaching staff share their
experiences.

ABSTRACT
The world spread of infectious disease Covid-19 has posed challenges to many institutions that
have mandated the institution to move to remote teaching and learning (RTL) - a temporary access
to instructional delivery as an alternative delivery mode during the pandemic crisis. This present
study aimed to have an overview of the effectiveness and readiness of pre-university students of
Islamic International University Malaysia (IIUM) during the pandemic of Covid-19. Data on
students’ demographic, expectation, platform availability, satisfaction and readiness were
collected and analysed which involved 515 respondents. Analysis was performed by partial least
square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) method, focusing on the measurement model.
Construct validity asessment consisting of indicator loading, internal consistency reliability and
convergent validity was reported. Outcomes of the findings revealed important implication for the
optimization and improvement of remote learning and knowledge acquisitions method for the
preparation of long-term Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, these findings can be the foundation
for further investigations on how to improvise the RTL for better implementation in developing
humankind and the society that is coherent with the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG-4).

ABSTRACT
This study is an alternative plan taken for temporary replacement of Arabic Placement Test that has been
implemented every year as a result of implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) due to covid-19. All
academic related activities including Arabic Placement Test (APT) for 2020/2021 new intake students are not
allowed to be done at the campus. Arabic Placement Test is an instrument used to identify student’s proficiency
levels in Arabic Language in order to be placed into LQM levels accordingly. This study involved previous year
2019/2020 new intake students’ data that could be classified into two types: English medium students, and Arabic
medium students (ARCOM, BAR & IRK). Total number of the students were 2918. This study aims to place
2020/2021 new intake students to Quranic language courses according to their SPM result in line with the previous
2019/2020 new intake students’ data. The percentages of students have been calculated with every single grade
in SPM from A+ to D and study of the correlation with APT band has been done. The data was analysed using Chi-
Square test to measure the association between SPM result and APT band. Based on data collected, the placement
for student with A+, A, A-, & B+ grades were exempted from LQM and students with grade B, C+, C were placed into
level 2 and the rest were placed into level 1. From the data counted, Arabic medium students from ARCOM, BAR and
IRK were placed into level 3 & 4 (83%), level 5 (10.7%), level 6 (5%), and only 1.3% were exempted from LQM. Therefore,
it has been suggested that no student was exempted for this 2020/2021 intake and students with only A+ grade was
placed into level 5 while students with A, A-, & B+ grades were placed into level 3&4. We are aware that an alternative
plan is undeniably can never be as good as the original, but this study contributed the best solution as silver lining in
the cloud amidst Covid-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT
In the era of global pandemic due to the COVID-19, education have no choice but to move forward
towards Remote Teaching and Learning (RTL). However, there are issues and challenges arising
from this phenomenon. The focus of this paper is on the internet connectivity and accessibility
issues amongst CFS IIUM law students and their educators. The objective of this paper is to expose
issues and problems encountered by both students and educators during the full online classes for
Law program and to explore “Humanistic approaches” and its mechanisms to tackle those
challenges. This study employs both qualitative and quantitative methods, which includes case
study, phenomenological and survey methods. It will state existing status quo involving the
implementation of remote teaching and learning classes, the issues and humanistic measures taken
by educators and students to curb the issues. Amongst the finding is that the internet connectivity
and accessibility which are the prerequisites for conducting online classes, have been unstable and
limited due to low internet bandwith. Therefore, the establishment of an affordable and sustainable
online class might be a challenging task for both students and educators. This is also taking into
consideration the financial, technical and the ethical aspects of RTL, via creation of an effective
learning environment and the required mood for learning and teaching in a less-disrupted online
classes. The students’ request for access to educators on their convenient time should not drain the
educators by overwhelming calls and messages. Hence, the humanising education approach must
make the shift a success by making RTL a more interesting and effective platform. It is hoped that
the findings of this paper shall serve as a guideline in conducting more effective distance learning
classes in the future.

ABSTRACT
In Outcome-based Education (OBE), action verbs (AVs) used must be clear and measurable to
ensure successful learning experiences. Students who fail to understand the implications of the
stated AVs are likely to fail in meeting their lecturers' expectations. Motivated by the Dual-
coding theory, AVIAR is developed to help students and teachers visualise the underlying
expectations of AVs through Augmented Reality (AR). Past studies show that AR can help
students master vocabulary faster when they are able to visualise the words learned. When the
selected AVs scanned using AVIAR, virtual information will appear. Hopefully, AVIAR will
reduce mismatches between student comprehension and teacher expectation.

ABSTRACT
The Bachelor of Laws (Shariah) (LLB_S) (Hons) programme was introduced in Ahmad Ibrahim
Kuliyyah of Laws (AIKOL), International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) in 1989. This
double degree programme aims to produce graduates who possess sufficient command of
knowledge, skills and aptitude in both Law and Shariah to serve the profession, society, nation,
ummah and humanity. At the same time, the programme aims to produce graduates who possess
skills for lifelong learning and a sense of awareness to uphold rule of law as well as Shariah and
social justice. Since its establishment, Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) is the main feeder for
the students to pursue Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) (Hons) and Bachelor of Laws (Shariah) (LLB_S)
(Hons) in AIKOL, IIUM. In line with the aspiration of AIKOL, the Department of Legal Studies
committed to produce as many as possible number of prospective students to pursue this special
double degree programme. The Shariah courses in AIKOL are taught in Arabic language medium
which require the students to complete a certain level of Quranic language requirements. However,
in recent years, there are several administrative and non-administrative issues faced by the
prospective Shariah students in CFS. This study aims to identify these issues and propose viable
solutions to ensure the sustainability of prospective Shariah students from CFS to enrol into the
double degree programme in AIKOL. Data for this study will be procured from a simple survey
that will be conducted among the current law students in CFS IIUM (Academic session 2020/2021)
and official record from the relevant offices of the university. Upon identifying and analysing the
relevant issues, this study will propose several viable administrative and non-administrative
approaches in an attempt to resolve the issues in the future. This is to ensure CFS IIUM plays its
vital role effectively in materialising the mission and vision of the university while leading the
way in providing the best platform to prepare future Shariah law students for their undergraduate
studies in IIUM.

ABSTRAK
Nabi Muhammad S.A.W. pernah bersabda “Apabila engkau hendak bersolat, berwuduklah
through Maqasid Shari’ah and SDG’, Wudhucation merupakan satu modul yang terhasil
berpandukan teori Pengekodan Dedua Paivio (Dual-coding theory) dan kebolehbacaan
(readability).

ABSTRACT
Classroom assessment practices (CAPs) can significantly impact students’ academic success.
This study was aimed at exploring CAPs performed by an academic staff at the Centre for
Foundation Studies, International Islamic University Malaysia. This grounded-theory study
deployed a face-to-face interview in order to gain insights into the informant’s CAPs. A
possible theory emerged from this study is that academics constantly refer to internal and
external sources when they are uncertain about their CAPs. Since this is a pilot study, a
document analysis on relevant documents should be carried out as a means of triangulation in
order to increase the credibility of the study. As required by grounded-theory theorists, more
participants should be included for theme comparison.

ABSTRACT
This study deals with the issue of learning Arabic Verb Patterns by using Augmented Reality as it
seeks to help students to learn through the design of an instructional module of learning. Among
the reasons related to this study are to know difficulties faced by many non-native Arabic language
learners in learning Arabic Verb Patterns, and to know learners’ perception on learning Arabic
Verb Patterns by using Augmented Reality. This study adopted descriptive, analytical, design and
development methodologies. The researcher collected information about the difficulties in learning
Arabic Verb Patterns, perception of using Augmented Reality and its element. Augmented Reality
(AR) can help students interact with the real world and enhance their learning experiences. The
survey shows that Arabic Passive Verb Patterns scored the highest difficulties in learning Arabic
Verb Patterns and 61 sample students in the CFS IIUM show their interest to use augmented reality
application to help students mastering Arabic Morphology. Then, the researcher designed an
instructional module of learning Arabic Verb Patterns via Augmented Reality. It was developed
in light of instructional design model of ADDIE based on the respondents’ views, suggestions and
needs. In addition, based on their needs and preferences, a mobile application, AR Tasrif, was
designed.

ABSTRACT
The education system for all level, from elementary to tertiary, is changing due to Pandemic crisis
of CoVid-19. This paradigm shift occurs globally, including in our country, Malaysia. There are
lots of challenges faced by not only the educators but the students themselves. This paper is a
portrayal of the Centre for Foundation Study, IIUM sciences student’s performance for three
selected Physics topics via different method of learning; conventional and online. The intended
purpose of this paper is to seek the continuing enhancement for the existing online teaching
methods in adopting with this shifting educational landscape. This paper utilize data from Physics
lecturer’s personal file and IIUM Moodle’s, I ta’leem for Semester 1 2019/2020, Semester 1
2020/2021 and Semester 2 2020/2021.The outcome from this paper disclose significant
effectiveness of learning physics in uncertain end of this pandemic.

ABSTRACT
The present study is to understand the impact of pandemic situation, which involved Nursing
(NUS) and Allied Health Sciences (ALLHS) student of International Islamic University Malaysia
(IIUM) who are experiencing blended learning due to COVID-19. A survey was conducted to
evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning among NUS and ALLHS students for Semester
1, 2020/2021, which was conducted on January 2021. In total 174 responses were collected and
analyzed via descriptive and frequency analysis. The questionnaires were developed based on four
variables: 1) Learning, 2) Instructor, 3) Online session and 4) Overall rating. The outcomes of this
study show that the three variables have important contributions in the effectiveness of the blended
learning towards students who experienced the face-to-face and online sessions throughout
Semester 1, 2020/2021. Furthermore, this study revealed that students appreciated online learning
because the session was engaging and effective as face-to-face session, which is in line with SDG-
4 in ensuring the education quality during the pandemic situation.

ABSTRACT
In order to evaluate the quantity and quality of an items and the test as a whole, item analysis use
in which simultaneously students' answers and test questions are studied. The subject of physics is
important and it is the requirement for most of CFS Sciences and Engineering students. This paper
present the statistical item analysis of the Physics examination in CFS students. 12 items were
tested to 1310 CFS students in the PHY 0215 PHYSICS 1 SEM 1 2019/2020 exam. The Rash
model was used as item analysis tool for the examination items. The test reliability was assessed
with reliability indices after removing any misfit and outlier items appears in the data. Item
difficulties and examinee ability was measured and has been calculated by Rash analysis at that
point expressed into common logit model and correct probability responses for the examination
items. The estimated test reliability was 100% and person reliability was 83%. The separation for
test item was estimated at 18.18 meanwhile for person was estimated at 2.12. The performance
that directly related to the students’ weaknesses is obtained from the continuous assessments of
the course, end of semester report analysis based on course outcomes and item analysis. The results
will be used as the basis for improving the teaching and learning process for this course.

ABSTRACT
This study is an attempt at changing End of Semester Examination from Arabic Placement Test (APT) to an
achievement test. It only involves Arabic language courses for elementary levels (LQM0106 & LQM0206). The APT
has been used for 9 years since 2012. Based on APT results analysis for 3 consecutive years, we found that there
are a lot of weaknesses of APT which affects courses, teachers and students’ performance. The questions
designed for elementary level are too limited especially for students with no Arabic background. For students
with Arabic background, they manage to get high marks in APT and it leads to the increasing numbers of
exempted students. Due to large numbers of exempted students, the staff teaching workload were also affected.
This study aims to provide a continuous assessment which suits the students’ language proficiency level and to
achieve course learning outcomes which emphasizes on language skills. A pilot study has been done on Semester
2 2018/2019 and questionnaire has been distributed to all QLD teachers and 62 students to know their
perspectives on using achievement test as End of Semester Examination. Based on the quantitative data collected,
100% teachers and 74.2% students prefer the achievement test rather than the APT. On this basis, it is expected
that this study will contribute for the betterment of the assessment that suits the students’ language proficiency
level in the Quranic Language Department.

ABSTRACT
The aging population is becoming a global trend that challenges social welfare and is likely to
result in structural and economic problems. With the development of medical care services and the
simultaneous decline of health threats, the world population is expected to live longer and thus
experiencing longer retirement days more than ever. As such, sustainable social protection and
financial resources are required to ensure the quality of life in retirement. Therefore, interest in
better understanding the dimensions of financial wellness among retirees has steadily risen among
researchers. But, the scope of these published studies is both broad and fragmented. There is a
lack of research that systematically examines and presents a comprehensive review of the different
dimensions of financial wellness among senior workers in Malaysia. This paper systematically
reviews the main constructs of financial preparedness for retirement among senior workers in
Malaysia found in past literature. The finding of this review will be used for developing the
Retirement Financial Wellness Index for elderly residents in Malaysia.
