COVER: Subiaco and Swan Districts clash today in the preliminary
final – the winner to battle South Fremantle next week for the 2009
title. Last year it was the Lions and the Swans that fought it out
for premiership glory. Today the road ends for one of these sides.
Both have terrific forward lines, capable of kicking big scores and
taking even bigger marks. So, the clash through the midfield, to get
the ball into attack is vital. Two crucial players in
that war are Subiaco’s Shaun Hildebrandt and
Swan Districts Josh Roberts. Both have been in
good form and will be closely watched by the
opposition.
IN last year’s preliminary final West Perth
was favoured to beat Swan Districts and
win through to the grand final to meet
Subiaco. Things didn’t quite work like
that. The Swans kicked 5.4 to 2.3 in
the final term to beat the Falcons by
10 points. The Swans best that day
was Wayde Twomey, who collected
32 possessions and took six marks.
The good news for the Swans is that
Twomey is in solid form again at the
business end of the season. He collected
26 touches against West Perth last Saturday,
and took nine marks and will be one of the
Swans key players again today.

Demons midfield to celebrate
WHEN Perth midfielder Ross Young was injured in
Round 15 of 2008 against Swan Districts, the votes
locked away for the Sandover Medal had the Demons
prize recruit in the lead.
But his season was over and Hayden Ballantyne
stormed home to win the honour.
Young finished third.
In 2009 Young has played all 20 games and his statistics
are even more impressive than in ’08. Brad Elborough
Young averages in 08 – 13.5k, 9.6hb, 5.5m
Young averages in 09 – 19k, 11.7hb, 6.2m
The Demons won six of the 12 games in 08 that Young played in. They won
nine and drew one of the 20 in 2009.
When Perth has won this season, the former Carlton small has starred. In the
10 games the Demons have taken points from, Young, 26, has eight times
had more than 30 possessions, including 40 in Round 15 and 42 in Round
7.
Plus, of the 10 losses Perth has suffered, Young has been kept quiet (under
25 touches) in just three.
However, in the past couple of years, those who have kicked goals have
caught the eye of the whistle blowers.
Not full-forwards though, otherwise Subiaco’s Brad Smith would have a
couple of Sandover Medals around his neck by now.
Ballantyne kicked 75 last season and Claremont’s Anthony Jones 68 the
year before. Young has only 15.20 to his name. But that is still more than
Matt Priddis had in 2006 (13 goals) and Jaxon Crabb had in 2005 (eight
goals).
But it raises the question of which goal scorers could push for this individual
victory.
The Tigers Chad Jones has 77 goals, but has he had as good a year as Smith
has in the previous couple? He should certainly get a few votes in the second
half of the season with four bags of five goals, two of six and seven against
West Perth in Round 22 when he also took 17 marks.
But maybe not enough to win.
Ross Young Ballantyne averaged more than 15 touches a game last season. Swan
Districts Tim Geappen has kicked 55 goals and averaged almost 17 touches
a game. Has he been the standout running half-forward that the Peel quick
was in 08?
Young’s teammate Matthew Ferguson has similar figures to Geappen,
which could cause an issue. Teammates sharing votes can cost a side
individual glory.

Rich, now chasing glory with Brisbane in the
AFL, has had an amazing debut season.
Having been taken by the Lions at No.7 in
the NAB AFL National Draft, Rich has been
outstanding in 2009.
Having claimed the NAB Rising Star, Rich backed
that up this week being voted by his peers, the
AFL players, as the best first year player.
Just like Rich’s win in the Rising Star award was
unanimous, with all voters giving the maximum
five votes, he was also a runaway winner in the AFL
Players Association award.
Rich polled 463 votes, to beat Collingwood’s
Dayne Beams (45) and Fremantle’s Greg
Broughton (25).
Rich has played 23 games this year, averaged

He has been commended for his accuracy
