Clubhouse Update | Chris Cissel, General Manager

Hello to our wonderful Philmont Family,

I cannot believe 2021 is in the books. Once again, I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to lead this Club over the past year.
We came a long way, overcame a lot of obstacles and invested a ton back into the Club, which we will continue to do in 2022.

Last year was a crazy one. It started with a shutdown due to COVID and was then followed by a major labor crisis. There were times
the team at Philmont felt like we were running through a dog obstacle course trying to win an agility contest. The staff, like always,
stepped it up. I truly believe team Philmont is now prepared for anything the country club gods throw at them. We kicked 2021 in the
butt and there is no looking back. I thank the members once again for being so patient during the crazy times.

On the Course
The greens in the beginning of the season were looking good and now they are looking great. The applications in the fairways to
prevent goose and crabgrass are doing their job, and the roughs were seeded. The continued cutting of trees has not only provided
proper ventilation for the course but opened the views to see how beautiful this property really is. Hollywood and his band of misfits
did a phenomenal job, and I can’t wait to see the place in the Spring. Just remember you are getting what you asked for. I expect
handicaps to skyrocket this season.

Tennis
It’s summer year-round at Philmont when it comes to tennis. The new heaters were installed for your enjoyment. Chris and his team
are working hard to develop a more interactive tennis schedule that involves more social gatherings. Keep your eyes out for what’s to
come.

The 1906 Grille
I would like to thank you all for your patience this year in the 1906 Grille. Things are looking up and our commitment to building a
great culinary team is coming to fruition. I am excited for what is in store and will keep you posted on the progress.

Hours of Operation for January and February
Monday – Wednesday Closed
Thursday – Sunday Carry out is available from 4:00pm – 7:00pm
Friday – Happy Hour from 4:00pm – 8:00pm
Sunday Morning Dining Service 10:00 – 2:00

We continue to work on coming up with new fun member events for everyone to enjoy. Please reach out to me with any new and fun
ideas.

Golf Operations
Golf operations has put together another fun schedule for 2022. Be ready come Spring to wipe the dust off the sticks and show your
fellow members what you got on the links. We will also be going to temporary Greens starting January 4th. We will stay on temp
greens through February.

Pro Shop Hours of operation
Wednesday – Sunday 9:00 am – 4:00pm

Lastly, I suggest that you take the time to check out the entire newsletter. The number of fun things to come, that you can only get by
being a member of Philmont, is amazing. Also keep a lookout for our emails about upcoming specials and events.

See you around the Club!

Grounds Review | Anthony Johnson, Golf Superintendent

Around the Course
January 2022

It is hard to believe that I am writing the winter newsletter already. Mother Nature
did not seem to decide what the time of year it is this winter. The fall season has
been littered with frost delays and then days in the 60’s. I would advise patience with
frost delays as there are many factors that go into the timing of such delays. The
amount of daylight is certainly far less and the sun angle that we receive this time of
year is well lower than the high skies we see in July and August. This provides a slow
warm up and when the ground has been freezing and thawing it is vital to take the
plants overall health into consideration over the time you get onto the golf course. I
have said previously that the freeze and thaw is detrimental to the health of the root
zone and takes longer to recover in the spring green up. Why can you not water the
frost off ? This time of year the irrigation system is drained, to also prevent freeze
and thaw of water in the pipes. You will have seen us blowing air into the irrigation
lines this past December to get out 90 percent of the water so it does not sit in low
lying areas and weaken the PVC pipes causing breaks in the summer months.

There are many new happenings with the Grounds Staff this winter with many new
announcements coming shortly but we are in the planning phases of these projects
for 2022 and 2023. These announcements will come shortly. The one announcement
I can make is the Grounds Staff is officially breaking ground on the new Maintenance
Facility to the right of the 6th tee box on Buck Road. You may have noticed the large
modular building sitting in the upper lot that will facilitate our offices, break room and
locker rooms for the staff. This is a major improvement to the department. We will
also be constructing a stick frame barn in order to properly store all the equipment
that Concert has invested in over the last three years. Keeping equipment out of the
elements is necessary to the longevity of the equipment. It will be a very busy couple
of years here at Philmont and the staff is very excited about the opportunity Concert
has afforded them.

14

The first question I get going into any winter around here is “How many trees are you
taking down?”. Well this year will be a more docile year for the staff when it comes to
tree work because we are getting to the point of looking at tree health, playability and
most of all player and staff safety. This winter we will focus on trimming trees in
order to create better views of the golf course. We have some areas that we will be
exposing like the rock wall behind the 8th tee box to make it a focal point of the
history of the club. The rest of the tree work will focus on trees that are unhealthy
and not fit to go through another year here on the course. We will also be adding
around 1000 linear feet of drainage, which sounds like a lot but in the grand scheme
of things is not. The fairway on the 11th hole will be the main focus as the drainage
that has been previously installed is starting to break down and fail. This is a common
occurrence on golf courses throughout the Northeast.
I take this January Newsletter to reflect on the past year and to the status of the golf
course. From the time I walked on property to now I am extremely proud of the
staff and what they have accomplished in two years. It is not easy coming into a club
with the prestige of Philmont and implementing a new Agronomic Plan and getting
the staff to by in without a lot of turnover. Fortunately, for me they have bought in
and we are making great strides to make the golf course better day by day and year by
year. As previously mentioned we are now shifting our focus to the rough and the
details of the golf course that will set Philmont apart and focus on providing quality
conditions throughout the entire property and focus on aesthetics. I am very pleased
with the direction we are moving and with big news on the horizon we will even
further set ourselves apart in the Philadelphia area.

See you on the course,
Anthony Johnson

CHEF’S
CORNER

Hello members and welcome to the first chef corner
recipe. We will be coming to you in our monthly news
letter. I figured why not start off our first recipe geared
towards the Holidays. And what better way then with a
delicious Prime Rib Roast.

This is for an 7-8 lb. Roast

Ingredients Directions
Choice Prime RIB (bone in) Take the roast and rub clarified butter or avocado
Softened butter oil, salt & pepper on all sides then place in the
Salt refrigerator for 24 hours. Take the roast out of the
Pepper refrigerator and let set for 30 minutes. Brush the
remaining butter & herbs along with salt & pepper
Olive oil over the roast until completely covered. Then place
Herb De Provence roast in an oven set at 250 degrees for 3.5 hours or
until you’ve reached an internal temp of 125 de-
grees. Please do not touch the oven during the
cooking time. Please!!
Now let it rest to recirculate the juices for 30/40
minutes. Set your oven at 500 degrees. After letting
meat rest place the roast in the 500 degree oven for
our reverse sear. 20 minutes then remove rib roast
from oven and enjoy!!!
You can carve right away since the roast rested
previously to searing.. nice side of mashed potatoes
and some grilled asparagus.. Happy Holidays. Chef P.
