Fall 2018 Hamady Middle & High School

Introduction

Photovoice is conducted in a manner that allows for the students to give their own assessment of pictures they
have taken, providing their own viewpoint and understanding.The process began with a meeting with a teacher
at the school; the students then volunteered after a presentation of the Photovoice process within their
classroom.This project was begun in October of 2018 and was slated to go for 8 weeks.

The focus of this project was to emphasize protective factors experienced by the students, that might serve as
insulation from risk factors related to alcohol and substance use. As a result of discussion among the students a
topical area was decided upon that centered on what the students saw as relevant to their collective
experience of life, entitling the project “In the Mix”.Taking pictures from their phones, and using imaging
accessories provided by the program facilitators, the students would take the pictures and provide the
narration.

The students were given instruction in the photovoice process, given instruction on various aspects of
photography, and given the freedom to take their pictures.
