Similarly, Article 14 safeguards any citizen from discrimination, however Article 375 of the IPC
discriminates against a wife.
Marital rape is a serious issue that needs to be addressed by our law enforcement authorities as well as
our society. According to the reports of the NHFC 97.6% of sexual violence is committed by
husbands.Different courts across the country have given differing verdicts in the cases of marital rape.
Recently, Chandigarh High court judge NK Chandravansi ruled that sexual intercourse between a husband
and a wife cannot be called rape even if it was forced on the wife. Right to respect for his or her physical
and mental integrity encompasses bodily integrity, and any disrespect or violation of bodily integrity is a
violation of individual autonomy."
In 2018 Gujarat high court said that non-consensual sex between a husband and a wife is not rape.
Delhi high court ruled that both men and women have the right to say “no” and marriage does not mean
consent.
Now even though a lot of state courts are starting to recognize the crime, the Supreme court fails at
protecting women’s rights. In March of 2021, 5000 women wrote an open letter asking Chief Justice to
step down because of two questions he had asked in court. And the other question was, "When two people
are living as husband and wife, however brutal the husband is, can the act of sexual intercourse between
them be called rape?"
In 2017 the supreme court ruled that sex with a wife under the age of 18 will amount to rape but the
question arises that isn’t child marriage unlawful in itself? So, did the court consider marital rape as an
offense or underage marriage and sex as an offense?
One and the only way we can tackle this heinous crime is by educating our women, making them aware of
their rights, and helping them fight this. We as a society need to support our women and stand with them
in need. And we need to teach our boys to be respectful and considerate. Law may not stand with women
for now, but we as a society can. By providing proper sex education to both boys and girls, and teaching
them about consent and how it is moral to ask for consent before doing anything with the other person,
changes can be brought. Men need to realize that women are not objects for their sexual satisfaction

Essay #8

TEEN DRUG ABUSE IN INDIA

In the world, drugs are the latest trend. Where knowledge and life values should be inculcated in every
mind, the drugs are taking their place and making life itself worthless. Sure, drugs have many positive
uses too, however, as humans it is in our nature to lean towards the negatives. The first decision to
take drugs is largely voluntary for most people. Repeated drug use alters the brain in such a way that
an addicted individual loses self-control and becomes unable to resist intense urges to consume drugs.
Addiction to drugs results in a relapsing disorder where the addicts recovering from drug usage are
very vulnerable to falling back into their ill habits.
People tend to use drugs for tons of reasons. Some experiment with recreational drugs out of curiosity,
to have a better experience, because friends are doing it; or to alleviate issues like tension, anxiety,
depression; and many others get influenced by family and friends to portray a better economic status
and overall quality of life. Factors like peer pressure, physical and sexual assault, past exposure to drugs
usage play a significant role too. It is not only illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin that lead to abuse
and dependence but also prescription medicines like painkillers, sleeping pills, tranquilizers that will
give out similar effects. The problem is many don’t even realize that they might be addicted to these
supplements.
Nowadays, no part of the world remains untouched by drug trafficking and drug addiction, which cause
human suffering and fuel the flames of crime and violence. India is no exception. Drug abuse has left an
adverse impact on the country, leading to an increasing crime rate and illegal activities causing
violence. The most commonly abused drugs in India are cannabis, heroin, and pharmaceuticals that are
produced in India.Cannabis products, often called charas, bhang, or ganja are abused throughout the
country since they have reached a spiritual status, further encouraging people to consume them.
According to K.C Dube and S.K Handa, by the time boys reach the ninth grade, about half of them have
used at least one of the drugs. According to some studies, alcohol is the most commonly used
substance (60-98%) followed by cannabis (4- 20%). The same epidemiological surveys also indicated
that 20-40% of subjects over the age of 15 are current alcohol users and 10% of them are regular or
excessive users. As far as alcohol abuse in the rural areas of UP is concerned, alcohol accounts for
82.5% and cannabis for 16.1%.

PAGE NO. 50

Current alcohol use in Punjab is 45.9% in Jalandharand 27.7% in Chandigarh, as opposed to 28.1% in
rural areas. Several states in India like Bihar and Gujarat have made cannabis legal. Pan-India law
regulating drug consumption is the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act that came into
force in 1985. Marijuana, also called Bhang in Hindi, is taken very openly even though it is illegal to
consume.
Substance abuse has negative effects on any abuser, however, it's the worst for teens. Brain
development does not complete until the mid-20s. Substances like alcohol, drugs affect the
prefrontal cortex of the brain, which helps in decision making. Thus, regular abuse of substances
leads to young people making rash decisions like unsafe sex, dangerous driving, street fights, abuse
at home, etc. which leads to haunting their adulthood with feelings of frustration, anxiety, and
depression. Substance abusers also tend to lose their attention span, ability to feel pleasure, and even
most opportunities during a period of heightened learning potential.
We as a society are losing a lot of young potential to such unhealthy practices. Escaping from the
grasps of drug usage is a work of one's will and the support of families, friends, peers, and the overall
social environment. Bringing awareness about this serious issue is extremely important to save many
young lives from going to waste. It is not just substance abuse that we need to be concerned about
but also mental health. Many families give their children a hard time for taking part in activities such
as drug abuse but fail to understand why the child may have chosen it. And until and unless we know
why, we cannot help improve the situation. Young people of today are put under a lot of stress and
are given very little freedom to release that stress in healthy ways such as going out with friends,
taking some time off work, watching tv shows or movies for entertainment, etc. In situations like
these, young people are more likely to secretly practice risky ways to release their stress a they feel
uncomfortable talking to their parents about how they are feeling. We need to strike up a healthy
conversation among us to prevent ill practices like substance abuse. It is high time we understand
the seriousness of drug abuse and bring awareness around the world.

Essay #9

YOU ARE NEVER ALONE

"Ezzi! Come down!”, mom called me for lunch. I was looking through my window. For the past two days, I
have seen this little boy always sitting alone besides the mango tree in the park. The park next door is
open 24×7. I will sometimes watch the kids play through my window when I get bored.
I went down for lunch and told my parents about the strange little boy. Dad told me that he could be just a
kid who has come to the park to play and it might have happened that I saw him only when he is taking
rest from his play. I nodded but I couldn't still match dad's opinion with what I observed. I saw him again,
on the same corner of the park. I became curious to know about this little boy. In my observation, he
doesn’t seem like a beggar too. I wonder why he chose to sit alone in a park where all the kids of his age
come to the park to play. It’s been a week. So, I decided to go to the park and talk to him.
I found him in his usual spot. "Hi!" I said. He seems confused and surprised at the same time but didn't
respond to me. "My name is Ezzi. May I know your name?". Still no response. He finally turned his face
towards me when I told him that I have been seeing him at the same spot for a week and wanted to know
why he sits alone all the time.
I realized that he was blind. He finally spoke up and told me, "Because I am alone. I am blind. I have no
friends. “He shouted, "No one likes me. Who will want to be my friend?"
I told him to calm down and asked him why he thinks that no one will like me.
I took his hand and let him touch my walking stick. "See I also walk with the help of a walking stick but I
have many friends."
"You sure?" he asked.
I stood up and told him that I will return the next day with the answer.
I went to the park with ten of my friends whom I have been updating about him for a week. We met in the
usual corner of the park. We finally got to know his name. Traeri it is.
He happily interacted with all my friends and was glad to meet them.
I have always surrounded myself with every type of people and that way I have made a unique life. My life
is beautiful but I don't differentiate myself because of my disability. I am capable of making friends and
being a friend to someone and I am the one who decides that.
